36 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2015

Today was the worst it has been, it al started about 2 months ago, it just happens without warning of any kind. But today the first time was on my way to work, luckily I had a place to pull off, turn off engine sit and start it back, not immediate I may say ( a little hesitation in the starting) then the second time (today) happened in an intersection same process, but this time was very scary, seeing how cars were coming at me honking and going around me. Then the third time (today) was on my way home from work, with my grandson in the car I might add, this accrued not 30 minutes after the 2nd incident. I had to pull off the road and repeat the process to get going again. If this continues to occur, it could turn into a very bad accident.

37 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

Several times when driving the car at a high rate of speed (55+) the smell of gas fumes are very strong inside the car. This is espically true when the a/c/ is on high.

38 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2015

I was at a traffic light and turning left to make the turn and go up the hill. The car lost power and I actually thought it had stalled. The car has done this for me numerous times and I am afraid it will cause an accident where someone will hit me in the rear when my car does not accelerate.

39 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2015

I was accelerating to merge onto I-495 in northern virginia, attaining a speed of approximately 55 mph. When I removed my foot from the gas pedal (because I had reached my desired speed), the car continued to accelerate uncontrollably. I applied full pressure to the break with both feet, but the car continued to surge forward. I attained a speed of almost 100 mph, even with both feet fully decompressing the break. Both shoulders of the interstate had construction, so there was no shoulder to utilize on either side. After weaving in and out of traffic, I finally found a suitable off ramp. After pulling the emergency break, putting the car in neutral, and eventually park, the car came to a very abrupt stop (just before I reached a busy intersection at the end of the off ramp). The breaks continued to smoke for another 45 minutes after coming to a stop and cutting the engine. I do not know how I'm alive, but I am grateful.

40 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2015

Vehicle was parked in garage. The rear hatch window exploded into hundred's of pieces. Low temperature last night 50 degrees, 60 degrees at time of incident.

41 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2015

The rear tailgate window exploded while car was parked in the garage with the garage door closed. Happened Sunday at 6:45 pm with an outdoor temperature of 45 degrees ferinheight. Car had been in the garage all weekend, since Friday early afternoon. No outside influence caused the breakage to happen. Glass filled the back of the car and the entire back of the garage. Falls right in line with NHTSA action number : pe11016.

42 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2015

Rear window shattered while parked and rear window defroster working.

43 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2014

Car was parked and closed rear lift gate and rear window exploded on me.

44 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2014

I was driving on a regular street in my area at the rate of 35. The speed limit is 40, so I decided to increase my speed to that of the speed limit. When I proceeded to accelerate, it appeared that the engine was just spinning, but not accelerating, when all of a sudden, it just lunged forward, not once, but twice. This was quite frightening as I had no advanced warning this was going to happen. After that incident, it appeared to be driving normal, until it happened again about a week later. I am afraid whenever I get behind the wheel now, but it is the only vehicle I own and I use it to get back and forth to work, so I am proceeding with extreme caution.

45 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2014

As I was driving my car lost it throttle. The engine continued to run but I had no ability to accelerate. I pulled the car over. Turned it off, then back on and the car appeared to show no issues. About two weeks later the issue appeared again. Same solution. From my research this appears to be a common issue and could very much endanger anyone in the vehicle.

46 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2014

My car will be idling and suddenly power down. Recently while I have been slowing down at a traffic light, stop light, or braking for traffic it will power down. After researching online I have found that hundreds of other Ford Escape owners have had the same issue, some have had it happen while driving at high rates of speed. I have taken it to 4 different mechanics, 2 of which are Ford dealerships and they work on it charge me a lot of money and it continues to happen. Almost a year now! I'm fed up.

47 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2014

Part broke apart in a/c system and a/c unit stopped working. This is not a wearable part and Ford refuses to fix. The car is just outside of warranty. The vehicle was purchased in winter and the a/c was never tested to see if it was working.

48 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2014

The transmission locked up in the center lane of hwy 50 leading into sacramento CA. The Ford came to a stop in high speed traffic and we were nearly hit from behind. We were stranded there for about a half an hour waiting for a tow truck to arrive. The Ford had to be dragged up onto the car hauler. The wheels would not roll.

49 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2014

I was driving on the interstate with my 3 year old son in the back seat. As I was in traffic all of a sudden I felt a loss of power and the wrench light went on. I was almost hit multiple times, but luckily was able to force it to the side of the road. I sat there for a couple minutes and then started the car normally and drove home. It was a scary experience and one that I hope Ford takes care of.

50 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2014

This problem happened two times within about 30 minutes time, so I drove immediately home, parked the car, and called my dealer, who speculated that the trouble was due to the "throttle body. " the first time, I was idling at a red light and when the light changed to green and I tried to accelerate, I had no acceleration. The vehicle just sat there, with no indication of any power to be had to the throttle. I turned on my emergency flashers, put the car in "park," turned off the ignition, turned it back on, put the car in "drive," and the car began to drive normally. Several minutes later, after parking the car, conducting an errand, and then re-starting the car and backing out of a driveway, the throttle did the same thing in the middle of a street: tried to accelerate in "drive" and got nothing until shutting off the ignition and re-starting. Previously, over the course of the past six months, I experienced what seems to be a similar, though opposite, problem with the throttle. Occasionally while driving, I would hear and feel what seemed to me to be a small surge of power while accelerating on surface roads. I assumed at that time that it was a transmission problem and mentioned it to the dealer when I took the car in for an oil change and normal servicing. The service department checked the transmission and found no problem with it. I believe now, after reading about the throttle problems with this model on ncconsumer. Org, that those incidents were likely due to the throttle body malfunctioning as well. I experienced approximately 10-12 of these power surge incidents.

51 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2014

I was driving on highway when all of a sudden my 2011 Ford Escape started to accelerate and stop, accelerate and stop. I pulled over, turned the car off and restarted the vehicle. When I put the vehicle in drive vehicle accelerated while people were in front of car. No one was hurt. Had to tow to autozone to have them attach troubleshooting machine. Result was p2111 throttle actuator control system.

52 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2014

Sudden lost of acceleration at 70 mph per our. Pushing on the pedal would not allow the car to accelerate. Pulled over restarted the car, tested accelerator in park and worked. Continued after pulling over same thing sudden lost of acceleration, car started to decelerating rapidly.

53 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2014

Right rear passenger door won't unlock or open.

54 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2014

I was driving in the left lane of I-495 in long island, NY around 1:00 pm when my car completely lost power. I pressed the gas pedal and felt that there was no power in the accelerator. The car was now only moving because of the previous highway speed that I had been driving at, and I was able to use the remaining propulsion of the car to pass to the right lane and pull over onto the shoulder. I had to wait 2 hours for a tow truck to arrive while waiting precariously close to the right lane of a major highway, because I was not able to move the car further to the right on the shoulder due to the lack of power. Needless to say, this was an extremely dangerous event for me, as I was surrounded by tractor trailers and other large vehicles that were driving a minimum of 65 mph. I could've been killed had I not thought quickly to guide my vehicle off the highway and onto the shoulder. I've now read about NHTSA's investigation into this stalling issue with Ford vehicles and thought it was important to notify the agency about yet another event - my own. My vehicle is currently at a Ford dealership in long island and I am awaiting news regarding the cause of the problem. But after reading about the numerous complaints which mirror my own car's power loss, I believe that I may also have a throttle body issue. Please expedite your investigation into this dangerous problem. People's lives are at stake.

55 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2014

While driving down the street at 40 mph my car stalled and stopped running. There were other cars behind me. I had to coast off the road and restart my vehicle.

56 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2014

When pressing on the gas the car shifts really hard. Then it seems like there is no get up and go afterwards. The transmission is shifting hard.

57 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2014

The rear hatch will not open. First it started off with sometimes opening and then not opening. Then as long as the vehicle was running, it would open. Now it won't open at all. When I push on the button to open the door, I can hear it doing something, but the hatch remains locked.

58 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2013

This is the 2nd incident with this vehicle, first time just stop middle of driving just shut down. Dealer did replace throttle body at 22,000 miles in Nov 2013. This incident (4-16-14) I was sitting at stop light a few miles from home and vehicle shut off, I put vehicle in p and did restart. Dropped off vehicle at dealer and at this point they have no answer for this problem. Just feel unsafe in this vehicle esp on the highway at full speed with this problem seems like can be a dangerous situation for my family and others. At this point I really just need to know if this is a reported problem with this car and what are my options?.

59 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2013

Ever since we bought our 2011 Ford Escape (used in FL--had to drive it to wa state due to military pcs army orders) the car has never gotten more than 20 mpg. It was hesitating consistently after we put 5,000 miles on the car. It started hesitating/ revving rpms at stop/jumping/accelerating then engine would just shut off and power as well. Finally stalled on joint base lewis mcchord, wa (where we are stationed and live) and my husband could not get it to start. The "check engine light" was also then showing. We had it towed to the nearest Ford dealership (lakewood Ford). We had a platinum warranty we paid extra for with our monthly payments. Even with that we still had to get an aer (army emergency relief) loan for the difference (appx. $187. 00) that was not covered. We were entitled to rental car coverage but the Ford dealership did not contact our warranty company in time so we were without a vehicle for 4 days. That was barely 3 months ago. They ended up replacing the throttle body regulator. Again. . . Here it is less than 3 months since that was replaced and we are only getting 18. 2 miles to the gallon. It is worse when we use the flex fuel. It barely has 47,000 miles and it is unpredictable and I feel unsafe in this car. My husband is being medically boarded from active duty army because he is 100% disabled and a "wounded warrior. " the only comfort I have is seeing that we aren't the only ones who have dealt with this problem. That is terrible to say but it is even worse when you cannot rely on a vehicle you bought only 1 year used. We are facing having to drive this back to orlando, FL and now we will probably voluntarily turn it in to the loan company simply because neither one of us feel safe enough to attempt to drive it 3500 miles across the united states, along with the medical concerns.

60 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2013

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while closing the automatic tailgate down, the latch closed incorrectly and the window shattered. The contact stated that the tailgate latch was faulty from the time the vehicle was purchased until the vehicle was taken in for repair, and the latch was lubricated. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The failure mileage was 12,500. Aa.

61 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2013

On August 21, 2013 driver of a 2011 Ford Escape was attempting to turn and accelerate the vehicle from a stoplight when the car jerked forward and would not accelerate with oncoming traffic, and with traffic moving behind the vehicle. The dashboard showed a wrench light, and drive found it hard to stop car as it was sputtering and jerking forward. The car was finally moved to the side of the road, shut off, and restarted, and drive the 10 miles home. Owner took car to the dealership where throttle body code was discovered. This part is not covered under powertrain warranty, thus owner fix cost is $600. 00. This is a safety concern on the vehicle, when it goes into safe mode there is no warning and can cause an accident when the vehicle suddenly decelerates to under 1000 rpm. I believe Ford should recall the faulty throttle body in the 2009-2011 models as they are safety issues for drivers in the car and other drivers on the road.

62 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2013

I was driving along at about 50mph and I completely lost power to my 2011 Escape. The accelerator did not function and would not rev the engine. I tried putting it in neutral and restarting with no success. The engine was still running but I had no power. I pulled off the road and turned off the engine. A couple of minutes later I tried to restart it so I could wait in a better location and the car started. I was able to drive to my destination but in going home the car stalled again. Again I had to turn off the engine in order to restart. I took it into the dealership the next morning and they had to replace the throttle at a cost of $505. 00.

63 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

My Ford would not accelerate, it sputtered and went dead. It would not restart. It had done this before but previously I could restart it. Dealership replaced throttle body.

64 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2013

On four seperate occasions, while accelerating the throttle gave out. The vehicle had no power to move forward, except what was left from the original speed. On one of theses occasions, I was on a major highway in the DC area when the throttle gave out. I turned on my hazards and pulled over. Thankfully the cars behind me had enough room not to crash into me. I then turned off the car. Once restarted, it seemed to stall a bit and then drove normally until the next incident. There have been 4 incidents within 5 days, all seeming to happen at random. The "wrench" flashes once the throttle goes out, but then doesn't appear once the car is back on and everything seems normal. Ford has given me problems, saying this falls outside my warranty and I may have to pay for the repair myself. They also wont see me for a week, when this merits immediate attention. I just bought this vehicle in March 2013, after this problem had already been reported by thousands of existing owners. Had I know about this problem, I would not have purchased this vehicle because it is so unsafe.

65 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

I was traveling down the road at a constant speed of 55mph. When my Ford Escape suddenly went dead. Luckily I was able to coast to the side if the road in heavy traffic, and call for help. I had my vehicle towed to a Ford dealership where they told us it was the throttle body that had went out and wasn't covered under the warranty. I think that after review the throttle body should be recalled in this make and model due to faulty parts.

66 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2013

Driving down the road, car stalled or seemed like it stalled when I stepped on the gas nothing happened so I had to coast to the side of the road in the middle of traffic, once to the side of the road the car started sputtering at idle. Had to turn off and restart car it would work fine for a little while then happened again. This happened 4 times within the half hour it took for me to get home. There have been other incidences where I'd be driving down the road and the car just "kicks" ahead, usually after leaving a red light or stopped position. Car is in the garage as we speak (7-22-13)because the part is on back order and isn't expected to be ready until Friday, 7-26-13.

67 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2013

While driving at freeway speeds, a/c was running (max a/c) and suddenly white smoke/mist was coming out of vents. The cabin started to smell like coolant. No indicator lights came on, engine temp remained normal, but it continued to come out along with cool air. This initially happened during morning commute, and same thing happened during evening commute. After taking to dealership for service, the diagnosis was that the heater core needs to be replaced, at an estimate of $1,150. Called Ford to report the problem, as a heater core should not have to be replaced on a vehicle with this few miles on it, and just over two years old. Waiting for resolution. Will be almost a week without car.

68 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2013

Traveling 70 mph on interstate north west of atlanta, georga at 5:00 in the morning using cruise control. Cruise control went off and car had a catastrophic loss of power. No response to the accelerator pedal. The open end wrench emblem came on on the dash board. Car speed dropped to 2. 5 mph with occasional double surges up to 4. 5 mph. Had to drive on shoulder for 1 1/2 miles at 2. 5 mph in order to get to an exit and call for assistance. Was on my own and totally unfamiliar with the area. Called Ford motor assist and they towed vehicle to dealership. This was a Sunday so had to spend night in motel before could see service people. Diagnosis ended up being throttle control needing replaced. Had complained to local dealership about something being wrong with what I thought was the transmission as the care would surge or shift funny several times clear up to just prior to reaching 36,000 mile warranty. Since this occurred at 37,195 and 500 miles away from home it was considered an out of warranty repair and cost $478. 00. I am thankful it was 5:00 in the morning on a Sunday as had this occurred in rush hour in a further left hand lane, the sudden deceleration would likely have cause a bad accident. This is a very dangerous problem!!!!!.

69 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2013

As I began accelerating from a stop I reached about 15mph when the car suddenly lost power and began to vibrate violently. The wrench light and check engine light came on. The engine light remains on. I was able to guide the car to the side of the road and had it towed to the shop. The mechanic informed me that it was the throttle body assemly and the parts are on backorder from Ford and he was told there was no eta. The mechanic was also told that it could take up to a year!!! how to I pay a car note for a useless car and how do I get to work?! the car is not driveable and the Ford Escapes that are still on the road are a danger to all without this problem being fixed!.

70 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2013

At a stop light, accelerating through the intersection at approx. 30 mph, the car jerked and lost speed. Put gas pedal down to floor. The car was never able to go over 10 mph. Had vehicle towed to dealership where I was told today it was a defective throttle body and due to back order on the part it would take upt to 2-3 weeks to receive a part. This exact same thing happened to my brother's 2009 Ford Escape. Seems if this is recurrent issue it should be recalled seeing as the potential danger to the driver and other's on the road.
