36 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/14/2013

Driving with cruise control set at 60mph, cruise disengaged, stepped on gas no throttle response pulled over and shut vehicle down restarted and proceeded home. Next day went to my Escape started vehicle and service engine light came on and remained on throughout the day. Called my Ford dealer to set up appointment to bring in the car for inspection. Was given a appointment in 3 days time (July 18,2013 @11:30am) was told by service advisor that it would be okay and safe to keep driving the car. Following day went to a meeting with my car, service engine light did not come on. While driving home the vehicle lost power and once again no throttle. Dealer service called and reported that the throttle assembly required replacement, asked if this was a known problem with the Escape and was told that there have been issues with the throttle assembly but no recall to date was told to keep the paid bill once the work was completed in case of a recall and reimbursement.

38 Cruise Control problem of the 2001 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

I had entered an interstate from an on ramp. I accelerated to get vehicle up to speed and set the cruise control. I approached a sharp curved and attempted to release the speed control by hitting the brakes. The vehicle did not stop and continued to stay moving at 55 mph. I avoided the outside lane and the traffic that I was merging into by going into the median. The vehicle hit an elevated man hole in the median and went airborne and hit a bridge overpass support head on. I suffered multiple fractures due to the collision.

39 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/13/2013

I had the cruise control set and was driving at between 55 and 60 on the meter. I was in an area where the road dips and rises. Coming up a rise it accelerated but then continued beyond the set speed. Applying the brakes did result in regaining control of the speed. This was not the first occurrence, and it seems to me that this happens after having gone up a hill. I checked to see if there were recalls issued for my car and it appears that there is not one for the 2007 model, but research has revealed several similar complaints.

40 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/30/2013

I was traveling on a four lane highway in southern illinois with my cruise control on when my Escape accelerated suddenly then just as suddenly lost all acceleration. I coasted to the side of the road with my flashers on. I shut the vehicle off due to it surging. Left it off called my dealer and while on hold just tried to see if it would restart. It then restarted fine and I proceeded to my destination. Returned to my town of residence and took vehicle to dealership they kept it the rest of the day and reported " no codes, no ssms, no TSB, rant etb test passed no problems found at this time. The next day I was in town going up a hill when my Escape suddenly accelerated up hill and again suddenly lost all acceleration. I this time coasted into parking lot. Again vehicle was surging. I placed vehicle in park with parking break on due to the power of the surges. Called dealership explained issues and made them listen to vehile while in park. This time someone figured issues as throttle body sticking. They replaced throttle body that day and I have not had trouble since. I am only finding out about these issues after searching web for similiar issues and found this site and others listing same issues. This could be a very dangerous situation, I have a reported issue to Ford and have a customer complaint number but I am awaiting a representive to return my call at this time.

41 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/25/2013

I have a random incident with my Ford Escape 2005, where at times when on cruise control, the engine will accelerate unexpectedly. After many years of driving, and attempting to file a complaint about the issue with Ford but refused as it wasn't reproducible when allotted, I think this issue occurs because the cruise control has self adjusted itself when towing a trailer. But after detaching the trailer and taking the truck for a long hilly ride, the engine computer may think it's still towing a trailer and strongly accelerate the engine when going uphill with the cruise control on. This is only based on what I have experience, and include no computer log examination. Not the best thing to happen if a police car is around, and being a safe driver. I'm not too concerned about this issue, as I self manage the issue. (tend to self manage a lot of things these days. ) this vehicle has served me quite well, except for a loud knock on the front drive axle on this awd - likely a bad bearing that they didn't fix when they fixed it initially. Shrugs.

42 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/23/2013

2010 Ford Escape. Consumer writes in regards to throttle control malfunction and requests reimbursement for repairs. The consumer stated the vehicle suddenly lost all acceleration while traveling on the highway in cruise control mode. The rpm would not go above 700 despite, the consumer applying the accelerator pedal. The local Ford service department gave the consumer some troubleshooting steps to reset the vehicle. The service advisor explained, the computer had stopped functioning. , which caused the vehicle to shut down. The consumer was informed to allow the vehicle to sit in the off position for a few minutes and the re-start it again. It provided a temporary fix, which allowed the consumer to continue to her destination. The after the consumer retrieved her vehicle, the low pressure sensor had activated. She took the vehicle to her local mechanic, who observed the vehicle was leaking transmission fluid on the driver side between the axle and transmission. The consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer. An inspection revealed the leak was coming from a seal. When the consumer picked the vehicle up, later that evening, the low tire pressure light illuminated. The consumer took the vehicle to a tire dealer, where they found a screw in the sidewall of the driver front tire. The consumer was informed, she would need to purchase two new tires.

43 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/30/2012

On 30 December 2012 at approximately 5 pm I was driving my 2010 Ford Escape XLT on us 61 in port gibson, ms. I was traveling at approximately 55 mph with the cruise control engaged when the vehicle began to slow down unexpectedly. I glanced down to observe the gauges and discovered the cruise control had ceased functioning and the trouble light (shaped like a wrench) had illuminated. I pressed the accelerator pedal and the engine failed to respond. I pulled to the shoulder and shut down the engine. After checking under the hood for any loss of fluid or obvious mechanical failure I could detect nothing indicating a major mechanical failure. I restarted the engine and observed the gauges noting the trouble light was no longer present. Thinking the problem may have been a temporary issue, I again proceeded to travel upon the highway for approximately 100 yards and again the same trouble light illuminated and I lost the ability to accelerate after reaching around 45 mph. I again pulled over, shut off the engine, and restarted. I managed to turn around and go home, but not before I had the same failure occur approximately 4 more times at 65 mph. I contacted Ford roadside assistance and the vehicle is being towed to a dealership in vicksburg, ms, 35 miles away. This is the first time the vehicle has exhibited any defects since I purchased it in June, 2012 with approximately 33,000 miles on it. I feel this vehicle is not safe to be operated upon the roads and could endanger my family's safety as well as other motorists.

44 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/27/2012

The contact owns a Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle began to accelerate independently. The contact shifted into neutral and the engine revved. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the they could not diagnose the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 107,000. . . . Updated 03-12-14 the consumer stated over the course of 2 years, the vehicle has accelerated on its own. The consumer took the vehicle to 2 garages and 3 Ford dealerships, and no one could find anything wrong. Updated 04/01/14.

45 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/17/2012

My wife was driving to work down a country road at about 55 mph with the cruise control on. All of the sudden she felt the car jerk and a wrench indicator light came on. The car immediately started to decelerate. She would push on the gas pedal and nothing would happen. Luckily there was no traffic around and she was able to coast into a driveway. The vehicle was basically about to stall out so she turned it off. After 30 seconds she started it back up and it started fine. To be safe we had it towed to the dealership it was purchased from. The dealership said no error message was in the computer system. After consulting with Ford the dealership told us that they were pretty sure it was the throttle body that needs replaced. We have not had the throttle body replaced do to the fact that the no error message was in the car computer and there seems to be no guarantee that $500 fix will take care of the issue. Upon more research I have done it seems like this issue is a very wide spread issue and happening all over the country. I am just glad that this did not happen to my wife while she was on a busy highway during the morning rush hour, which she does take sometimes to work but this morning choice to go the back way.

46 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/15/2012

Sudden and rapid uncontrollable acceleration after removing my foot from accelerator. Despite my best efforts to brake and arrest my movement the vehicle still was moving forward. I impacted the rear end of a truck that thankfully was heavy enough to completely stop my forward movement. I had this vehicle in my local Ford dealer to address the cruise control recall. I was assured by the technicians that it was indeed modified (that the plastic engine cover was fitted with new longer fittings/bolts). This uncontrollable acceleration incident happened after alleged recall/repair.

47 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/11/2012

I was at a red light on a freeway exit. My cruise control had been set to 65 mph, and when I accidently tapped the resume lever, the car accelerated rapidly. Hitting the brakes did not stop the car before it hit the car in front of me. The cruise control cancel/resume lever is located on the lower left part of the steering wheel. If your steering wheel is in a low position, and you move your left leg, you can activate cruise control with your thigh causing immediate acceleration. This happened to me again while driving slowly on a curvy road last week. This could be disastrous if it occurs at a cross walk. Luckily I only hit a car, not a pedestrian, and there were no injuries. Elevating the steering wheel reduces the likelihood of activating cruise control.

48 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/15/2012

I was driving from mississippi to kansas. Had the vehicle set on cruise control and it just quit. Startingslowing down and I could not accelerate using the gas pedal. I had to pull over and shut off the vehicle for a few minutes. It clicked several times before finally turning over. It never did it again until recently and now it does it repeatedly with no indicator(s). There is no way a vehicle that is only three years old shoild gave a majir functioning paft malfunction like that. And definitely not for the price we pay for a vehicle. Its going to cause an accident (if it hasnt already) suddenly losing power like that in a high traffic area and at any speed is dangerous.

49 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/24/2012

I was passing another vehicle - starting speed 40 mph - when the Escape went into passing gear the gas pedal stuck to the floor. I kicked at the pedal and the brake pedal trying to get the cruise control to release the pedal. I did not have the cruise control operating at the time as I had just went through a 45 mph zone. I got my foot under the edge of the pedal and pulled it up. The car was up to 90 mph on a two lane highway at 10:30 p. M coming into a curve. I have contacted Ford motor company and they told me that there are no recalls for the 2008 Escape, but I know there are recalls for other years for this same problem. The Ford dealer repair shop could not make the pedal stick and told me there is nothing wrong with the car. I want to make Ford and your agency aware that the 2008 Escape has the same pedal sticking problem as the older models.

52 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/26/2012

Entering the interstate, I sped up to merge, but could not push accelerator pedal to even get out of overdrive. (making things worse, the merge was from the left. ) pedal was full down. After dodging go home traffic, I limped to right hand lane and got off at next Ford dealership. Service rep and I looked at the depression made in the plastic housing to the steering column, where pedal hardware had indented it. Service said engine appeared to be operating ok; he tested it by revving the engine in the garage. He remarked the visible symptom was the pedal being so low there's no room for travel. I continued on 150 miles back home and called Ford to look at the "speed control malfunction" issue. Vehicle appears to accelerate ok with cruise control; the pedal is sitting so low there's no travel to accelerate. This could have been seriously dangerous - merging in metro traffic is no game.

53 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/11/2012

While driving on the expressway, my gas pedal snapped forward by itself and accelerated my car. Then snapped back and hit my foot in the position it was already in. This has happened before, several times over the course of my ownership of this car. (I bought it new) I ignored it the first few times because I thought it was related to being on cruise control, but this was not always the case. I saw on fox news that there is an ongoing investigation; and called Ford to see if they would repair my car and they said no. I am hoping they will have a recall, because I plan on keeping this car for awhile, and don't want to pay for the repairs. Thanks.

54 Cruise Control problem of the 2004 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/29/2012

I made a left turn from eastbound stewart road onto the inside lane of northbound m125 (n. Monroe street), monroe, mi at approximately 09:00. When approaching frenchtown mall area on the left, cars ahead were stopped for others making left turns into the mall. I took my right foot off of the gas pedal to coast so as not to have to brake. Suddenly my car accelerated (sped up); my right foot was still off of the gas pedal and on the floor. I hit the brake hard with my right foot and the vehicle did stop. (I never use my left foot to brake. I always use the right foot to drive and to brake. ) I thought of all of the incidents of sudden acceleration; now knew how it felt. Researched, found info as to recall issued . We never received recall notice. Put VIN # in Ford site. Our vehicle, 2004 Escape 3. 0l v6 not recalled. The cruise control quit working may, 2011. We had the Escape in for regular service recently and we told the service advisor, who is also the assistant service manager at the dealer, that the cruise control no longer worked. He said it could be checked but it would be expensive to fix. We chose not to incur additional expense given the age of the vehicle. This vehicle has consistently had all service, oil changes, repairs done at the Ford dealer. We did not know about the recall, nor of the technical service bulletin issued to all dealers by Ford. Interesting note: we own and drive a 1989 Ford f150 and the cruise control works fine!.

55 Cruise Control problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/28/2012

I was driving down highway in morning traffic with cruise control set at 55-60mph when all acceleration cut off and I had to immediately pull over and put my 2009 Ford Escape into park, at which point the engine was shuddering violently and my wrench light (powertrain) appeared in the dash. Shut off engine, waited 1-2 mins and restart engine. Ran normally, pulled onto highway again and set cruise when the same happened a 2nd time. Happened 3-5 more times (with & without cruise) over the next day until I could get my car to the Ford dealer for service. Ford dealer advised it was throttle body in addition to other sensors. (the throttle body was not covered under powertrain warranty and cost me $300 in parts & labor!!) the error codes were: p0012, p0341, p0346, p2111, & p2112.

56 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/09/2012

I had been traveling in a construction zone so I had my cruise control set somewhere near 35 or 40mph. The construction zone cleared up and I returned to normal speed but left the cruise control on. I accelerated on my own to about 70mph. A minute later the gas pedal left my foot and went to the floor accelerating the vehicle. Once at about 80mph the pedal let go and slapped the bottom of my foot (which was still in the position it was in at doing 70mph. The gas pedal (on it's own) moved to the floor and slapped my foot about 6 times before I turned off the cruise control. And again, the cruise control speed was set at about 40mph.

57 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/06/2012

When going down a hill with cruise control on and the car drifts above the set speed the cruise suddenly gives the car a sudden burst of speed. It has done this many times.

58 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

2003 Ford Escape. Consumer states cruise control will not turn on.

59 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/10/2011

The vehicle speeds up 10 to 15 mph by itself for 5 to 7 seconds when cruise control is activated and, then, slows down to original set speed. When this happens, the gas pedal goes all the way down and kick back when it releases and making sounds when hits hard the shoe. It has been happening since November 2011 only when cruise control is being use and not all the time. It happens at least 2 each month since then. It was reported July 18 around 9:45am to Ford motor company after recall news about Ford Escapes 2002-2004 with v6 engines (like mine) suffer from mechanical flaw that leads to sudden acceleration. At the time, there were no recalls for my VIN.

60 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the vehicle accelerated independently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer previously for the same failure which was diagnosed as being related to the cruise control, which was repaired at that time. The vehicle recently started exhibit the same issues. The dealer was not notified of the second failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure either. The failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 178,000.

61 Cruise Control problem of the 2001 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/13/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Escape. While turning into a residential driveway at 5mph, the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact immediately shut off the engine. On a later date while driving at 30 mph, the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact then noticed that the cruise control had independently activated. The cruise control light was illuminated yet the contact did not engage the cruise control. The manufacturer advised that there were no similar complaints and that the vehicle should be diagnosed by the dealer. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or diagnosis. The failure mileage was 70,000 and the current was unknown.

62 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/09/2010

On 02/09/10 I was driving my 2007 Ford Escape. The gas pedal stuck. I could only get it to work by using my cruise control buttons. I proceeded to my friend's house. It happened several times on the along the 13 mile ride. When I arrived I went online and googled my make and model along with the words "accelerator stuck". I found several websites where there was a discussion of the issue going back to the 3002 model. I read that it happened to several years of the same model of vehicle. I discovered the fix was replacing the throttle body and it solves the problem. I called kendall Ford (my dealership) and left a message for my service manager. He returned my call in less than 45 minutes. I explained, he listened, he told me to bring it in and said there is no recall so I would have to pay for it. I brought in my vehicle and left it and went to work. I called Ford consumer affairs in detroit and spoke with a representative, the lady who answered. She took my VIN number. I told her I researched online and this was an ongoing issue dating back to at least 2001. I asked why no recall she said Ford monitors repairs and had not deemed this a problem. I told her it was a known issue and I would file a complaint with my state ag and she told me she would note it. My car was delivered to me at work and the cost was $305. 43; $140. 53 for parts and $164. 43 for labor. I called my service manager and asked about the cost. He verified it. He told me they had done this repair "many" times on this model of vehicle. I feel since this issue has been going on since at least 2001 Ford should have looked into it and perhaps this vehicle should be recalled. It is obviously a known issue. I have filed complaints with the bbb and the oregon ag.

63 Cruise Control problem of the 2001 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/03/2009

My 2001 Ford Escape caught fire on the interstate after being on cruise control for approximately 1 hour. As I was driving, the car began to slow down, then I got out to realize the vehicle was on fire. The car was totaled as well as all of the things inside.

64 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/16/2009

I was driving my 2006 Ford Escape home from a friend's house with the cruise control on when I noticed a strange odor, like something was burning. I came to a stop behind another vehicle. I wasn't sure the smell was coming from my truck until I turned onto my street and noticed smoke. I grabbed some bags out of the truck and popped the hood. White smoke started pouring out. I went into the house and called 911. I went upstairs to let my aunt know to move her car and within a matter of 5-8 minutes, we heard a loud bang. I ran down the stairs to find the front of the truck burning. I started pulling things out of the truck until the flames quickly spread to the inside roof interior. The fire department arrived and put out the fire but the entire front of the truck was destroyed. The dashboard and steering wheel melted completely. I had very recently had the oil changed on my truck at the dealership, as I have done for the almost 2 years of ownership. Their multi-point inspection did not reflect that anything was wrong with the vehicle which would cause this kind of damage. The truck caught fire and was destroyed very quickly. After the fire I researched this truck type and found that Ford has recalled several hundred thousand earlier models for fires. I am very concerned because this was a family vehicle. I or my child could have been injured or worse. Please investigate this further.

65 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

I have a 2005 Ford Escape (4wd), not the hybrid. I have approx. 63,000 mi on it now. Three times since I've owned it the car has suddenly started accelerating on it's own. The last time was approx. The date below, and that was the only time I was using the cruise control. One time I was in town and luckily there wasn't anyone close in front of me. So far braking, or pressing the accelerator has "reset" it, but now seeing this problem with the Toyota's I'm concerned. I e-mailed Ford about the problem, however I kind of got the brush-off, and they just said if I was concerned I should take it to my dealer and have it checked. I know a "check" would cost me a large amount of money for an intermittent problem for which they won't find the problem. I just wonder if you've heard of anyone else having this problem? it now worries me that if I were nearing a crosswalk, with pedestrians crossing and it happened, I might hit someone. Please advise. Thank you for your time.

66 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/15/2008

Cruise control would take over without warning and without the switch being depressed. The engine would accelerate. At times the cruise control would drop out for no apparent reason. The cruise control could be engaged by merely sliding the thumb across the switch without depressing it. Vehicle was taken to galpin Ford in dewey, az for repair. The problem was explained to the service department. The vehicle was returned without repair. The service rep said they had taken the vehicle for a test drive and found no problem. When I got home I read the invoice in detail and found a notation from the mechanic that stated the switch needed replaced. I visited the service manager of the parent dealership, galpin Ford of prescott, az and indicated my displeasure with a dangerous problem not being corrected. He stated the defect had not been recalled yet but promised if it did get recalled in the future, they would reimburse the cost of the repair. The switch was replaced 1/15/08 at a cost of $69. 34 parts and 133. 58 labor.

67 Cruise Control problem of the 2004 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/10/2007

My cruise control stopped working after I had a 30,000 mile check up at the bob davidson Ford dealership. I email Ford and got a response to take the car to the dealership for a diagnosis test. I took the car to bob davidson and found it would cost me $123. 00 for the diagnose and the cost would not be applied to any repairs. I do not have $123. 00 for them to tell me I have a problem the problem is the engage light comes on, but the speed trotter does not engage to keep the set speed.

68 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/10/2007

Had previously asked home dealership to check cruise control for failure to turn on. After traveling for approx. 1 hour on interstate, attempted to turn on cruise control. On third try, cruise control engaged and set at 70 mph. After a few miles I tried to turn it off with no results. Engine continued to accelerate when brake applied. I contacted someone who advised me to pull over and turn the car off if possible. I pulled in to a rest area with both feet on brake and was able to stop the car and immediately put it in park and turn it off. (very difficult with engine revving continuously) I tried to turn the car back on to see if the cruise turned off with the car, it did not, the engine immediately accelerated and the engine sounded as if it was going to explode. I turned the car off. The car was towed to a dealership and the cruise control throttle cable was found to be stuck. The cable was disconnected as they said they had no parts to replace the cruise control. I was sent on with a request to have it replaced at my home dealership. I was charged for the service.

69 Cruise Control problem of the 2004 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/17/2007

I have a 2004 Ford Escape that the cruise control switch (deactivation switch) has gone bad on two (2) occasions since I have had the vehicle. The first time the dealer replaced it and I have not yet replaced it the second time. Is this common and is their a problem with these switches?.
