36 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/17/2024

Took vehicle my 2018 fwd SUV Ford Escape to Ford dealership for routine oil change service including tire rotation with 34,250 mileage on vehicle. Was told could not rotate tires as lug nuts were swollen/distorted and needed to get new ones for replacement and that my vehicle's tire iron or other conventional wrench will not fit when this happens and equipment can break, etc. Ford did not have a recall for this problem. Was told the original Ford lug nuts poor quality and design so bought new better ones from different manufacturer. I believe this should be a covered recall issue. Ford service code from invoice: acpz1012hx (I am unable to upload/attach invoice).

38 Wheel problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/01/2024

This 2011 Ford Escape has a front k-frame (subframe) failure. The area where the front passenger lower control connects to the k-frame has completely rusted through, causing the lower control arm to almost detach from the vehicle at the front bushing. While driving, the steering wheel suddenly became crooked and the car was taken to a shop for an alignment. Upon inspection it was learned that the k-frame has rusted in that one area so badly that the wheel could become detached if the vehicle is driven any further. I see that Ford has this exact issue with 2001-2004 models and did a recall. However, they are not indicating that they are addressing this same problem with newer models.

39 Wheel problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/23/2024

Both rear shocks, mounts, wheel wells, entire length of body door panels passenger seats are just absolutely rusted beyond repair. I've gone to a couple different shops and each one said that there is nothing they can do to fix the issue. Now the vehicle when ridden in just bounces horribly wearing out bearing springs and tires are being worn out. There is only 110759 miles on it and bought this for my wife/ kids cause I've had 3 other Escapes in the past so since I work on the road this is prefect sized for then not to big or too small. I've had so many issues this last year with repairs parts and now worried about safety issues.

40 Wheel problem of the 2016 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/21/2024

The front driver side tire went flat. When a friend tried to remove lug nuts it was discovered that the lug wrench supplied by Ford with the vehicle would not fit over 3 of the 5 nuts. In a youtube video search from home I discovered that Ford had applied a metal coating to the outside of the lug nuts that in time tends to swell and prevents a socket from from going over the lug. Several videos showed people using hammers to force a larger socket over it and using an impact hammer to get the lugs off. Some took 20 mins. To remove. Since our lugs could not be removed on the roadside, a can of fix-a-flat and a short drive on the near flat to a service station allowed them to get the car to a safe place for the night. The next day a call to the service manager at dick hannah Ford dealership in sandy oregon (503-809-4711) was no help and he said he had never heard of this before. I called a local outlet (estacada, or. ) (503-210-5111)of regional tire repair company les schawb tires, and the manager there told me that he sees this all the time. He even completed my description of the problem with added details. He says that he has been recommending the complete removal of all lugs on any trucks or cars that come in with these lugs for years. He is saving all the lugs that come off of my car and has agreed to attest to the facts of what he finds and his past experience with this issue. I will keep the lugs if you would like to inspect them. No one was endangered in this incident. It happened on a dry day in the early afternoon just miles from a friends home. But I can't believe that no one has ever found themselves in a dangerous situation with a flat tire that can't be replaced with the very tool that Ford has provided in their vehicle for doing so. No warning has been issued, no recall initiated, and Ford keeps putting these useless tools in cars and trucks letting people believe that they will work. Several youtube videos have documented the issue.

41 Wheel problem of the 2012 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/11/2024

While doing an exhaust inspection on my car, I noticed the front subframe is rusted completely through on the right hand side near the rear lower control are bushing. This is a major structural component of the vehicle and I believe it is a huge safety risk driving it. The car has around 114,000 miles on it. I feel Ford should issue a recall and replace these rusted trough front subframes. I cannot afford to replace it at the cost of $2000 including labor. Please help, thank you.

42 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/07/2024

Lug nuts have deformed and cannot be removed with standard lug nut wrench supplied with car. Have to be removed by a mechanic and replaced with new lug nuts which if from Ford only bend again.

43 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/17/2024

The lug nuts are swollen/distorted and some cannot be removed with the factory-provided lug wrench. They are supposed to be 19mm, but a 19mm socket does not fit over most of my lug nuts and strips them. Other size sockets do not fit either. Three are damaged. I had to buy a set of extraction sockets to remove them and a full set of aftermarket lug nuts to replace all of the Ford nuts.

45 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/03/2024

I took my Escape to the dealership for routine oil change and tire rotation. ( almost 43000 miles). I received a call from dealership that I had "swollen lug nuts" and to rotate my tires these needed to be changed. I had never heard of such a thing. My significant other had not either and he spoke to the dealership representative who said that this was true and that inorder to rotate tires the lug nuts required changing. The representative said they had them instock and the cost would be around $180. 00. We decided to investigate further and deferred the change at that time. After discussing with another repair shop and reading about other issues with Ford vehicle ,Dodge, and a few Toyota we ascertained this was an issue. I took my Escape to the other repair shop and had the lug nuts changed for $110. 00. It appears to me that this has been an issue previously and class action suit was filed and dismissed. This appears to be a problem that can lead to bigger problems if not corrected. Ie swollen lug not car has flat tire, tire cannot be changed due to special equipment required to change flat, all resulting in car being towed to appropriate dealership for change out of lug nuts. I bought a Ford product promoted as being a quality product. How can this be if the lug nuts do not withstand 43000 miles and the vehicle being in a garage at all times when not in use, then developes this problem. I see potential for major safety issues if this is not corrected by potential injury to the driver of a vehicle with this issue and to the vehicle if a flat should occur and unable to change flat tire. Please review and advise . Thank you donna hedges.

46 Wheel problem of the 2016 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/20/2023

A hole the size of a quarter suddenly blew out of the inside section of the metal wheel while driving 65 mph, and the tire instantly went flat. There was nothing in or on the road, no prior accidents that may have damaged the wheel, and there was no existing or resulting damage to the tire. Thankfully the wheel was on the rear passenger side. If it had been on the front end, the driver most likely would have lost control of the vehicle, causing a serious accident at a high rate of speed.

47 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/26/2023

On November 26, 1923 I had a flat tire on my 2017 Ford Escape. I tried to take the flat tire off & put the spare tire on with the lug wrench provided by Ford & it would not fit on the lug nuts enough to remove them. The size of the lug nuts were bigger than the opening on the lug wrench & I could not get any lug nuts off. My son gave me the lug wrench from his wife’s 2014 Ford focus. It was identical to my lug wrench. He told me this lug wrench would not fit the lug nuts of his wife's car. It would not fit on the lug nuts of my car. We called roadside assistance to change the flat, but they could not. We borrowed our daughter’s 2016 Ford Escape to drive home. I took the lug wrench out of her car & it was an exact match of my lug wrench & the one from my sons wife's car. I tried to put this lug wrench on the lug nuts of my daughter’s car & it would not fit. All 3 vehicles had lug nuts that could not be loosened by the lug wrenches Ford provided. The next day our 2017 Ford Escape was towed to a walmart & they fixed the flat tire without any difficulty removing or reinstalling the lug nuts. I have spent about $50 on tools that allow me to remove & tighten the lug nuts on my 2017 Escape. On November 30, 2023 I took our car to my local Ford dealer & they confirmed I had swollen lug nuts. They said the solution was for me to buy new ones that would not swell & the cost would be about $100. On December 1,2023 I talked to ashley at the Ford customer care center about this & was told Ford considers swollen lug nuts normal wear & tear. I have been driving & maintaining Ford vehicles for 50 years & never experienced this problem before now. I sent a letter to the Ford customer care center requesting Ford solve this problem. Ford should tell owners of its vehicles that may have swollen lug nuts of the possible implications. In certain circumstances this could have caused my wife & I great harm or death. I have attached the letter I sent to Ford.

48 Wheel problem of the 2019 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/11/2023

Car was parked in residential parking lot overnight. This morning I noticed my vehicle had rolled forward and hit a pole and the curb, cause front left damage to the fender, wheel and wheel hub assembly, and the brakes. Call is currently under recall due to a problem with the transmission slipping out of gear.

49 Wheel problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/08/2023

I have experienced many issues with my vehicle that have been recalled in other vehicles of the same make/model/year but have been denied the assistance in fixing me car and preventing and further damage or risk of my safety due to my VIN not showing any recalls. I do believe that my safety has been disregarded and that my car needs inspection to further show that I should be assisted in getting the recalls identified and fixed to improve my safety and others on the road. The first issue I noticed that was recalled on other 2013 Ford Escapes was a recall on the control arm which was caused by the separation of the control arm from corrosion which increased the risk of crash. I had an incident where my car all of the sudden would not return from the right turning position after I heard a clunking noise which caused me to run into a curb. After further investigation it was found that my control arm failed and locked which wouldn't allow me to avoid hitting the curb. I suffered a concussion and had to pay for this to be fixed due to being denied from the recall. Secondly, Ford has issued many recalls on 2013 Ford Escape engines due to overheat and cylinder head malfunctions many of them my car has been diagnosed and proven to have. I have pulled codes from my check engine that are direct codes that was recalled about the overheating of the cylinder head causing cracks and leaks into the oil. This code I pulled from my car was p0117 and it was traced to the recall from Ford ( 13v583000). Other recalls have been issued by Ford for engine overheating, and my car has been over heating after directly putting coolant into my vehicle and it tends to run out in 1 to 2 days after refilling. My safety and others on the road are at risk from these issues that were not caused by me or other drivers but I am not getting any assistance or anyone willing to look at these recalls and assist in reimbursement or fixing my cars issues. My car needs to be reviewed for the recalls.

52 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/09/2023

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Escape. The contact stated while having a routine brake check, the mechanic was not able to remove the lock nuts off all 4 tires. The dealer stated that their aware of the failure but there was no recall for the failure but recommended to replace the lock nuts. The vehicle was not repaired. 53 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/08/2023

During scheduled oil change service on 8/8/2023, informed that wheel lug nuts were swollen and tire rotation was not completed. Replacement lugnuts were not in stock. Returned on 8/17/2023 and had all wheel lugnuts replaced.

54 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/02/2023

Today, the shop I took my vehicle to for oil change and tire rotation, could not complete the tire rotation due to many lug nuts being swollen and unable to be reinstalled safely. I had to purchase seventeen new lug nuts costing several hundred dollars to make the vehicle safe again. This flaw in lug nut selection by Ford is widely known and this is not my first encounter with swollen lug nuts. Previously, I had a flat tire on a local highway. When I attempted to change the tire, the provided lug wrench would not fit the lugs. A wrecker was summoned and the driver was also not able to remove the lugs with any sockets he had. The vehicle needed to be towed to my Ford dealer. Lug nuts were replaced at that time as well. My concern is the safety of the lug nuts since heating can caus them to swell and distort. Are they also being prematurely weakened due to inappropriate materials being used?.

55 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/01/2023

Lug nut has a two piece design a nut with a chrome cover that swells making it impossible to remove the lugs with the tool provided by the manufacturer. The safety issue is it leaves people stranded without any tool to replace a tire in the event of a flat.

56 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/21/2023

I had a flat tire with my Ford Escape. The lug nut wrench Ford included with the vehicle would not fit the lug nuts. I understand there is a problem with the lug nuts swelling due to an extremely poor design. I can change a tire but because of the swelled lug nuts I had to hire a towing company. So these poorly designed lug nuts cost me several hundred dollars. They also pose a safety issue. Luckily I was in a safe location when this happened. But my wife and I often drive in isolated locations with little or no lighting. We could be in a dangerous situation if I can’t change a flat tire due to swelled lug nuts. I can pay to install new lug nuts, but that is also a financial burden that I and all Ford owners should not have to bear. I understand a lawsuit against Ford regarding these lug nuts was thrown out. Sounds like another case of big industry getting preferential treatment over the safety of citizens.

57 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/21/2023

All 20 oem 2-piece lug nuts have swollen so that the oem supplied lug nut wrench will not fit on the nuts. Therefore, if I have a flat tire while driving, and I need to pull over and change the tire, I have no way to get the lug nuts loose to change the tire. If this happens at night and/or in a dangerous part of town, or if I am stranded on the highway miles from the closest access to service or communication, I, or vulnerable passengers could be in danger. The local Ford dealer acknowledge that this problem occurs, but no recall has been issued to my knowledge. To remedy the potential danger, Ford should swap out all 20 0f the oem 2-piece lug nuts, free of charge, for solid 1-piece nuts that will not swell.

58 Wheel problem of the 2015 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/06/2023

On July 06, 2023, I took my wife's Ford Escape to dick masheter Ford for an oil change and tire rotation. It is the dealership that we bought the car new. The car is a 2015 and has only 44000 miles on it. The technician came over to the service representative so I knew there was a problem. They informed me that the wheel lug nuts had swollen and the parts department didn't have any lug nuts in stock. I would have to go somewhere else to get them replaced. I did some research on the internet and found out that my problem is not new to Ford. I have bought Ford cars for my wife and me for the last twenty years and I feel Ford should offer help on my wife's car. If not replace the lug nuts then assist in changing them out when I rotate the tires again.

Tried to remove the tires on my 2016 Ford Escape to add brake pads. The tire tool in car would not fit on any of the tire nuts. The tool would fit on the jack connector. Also tried 19mm socket. Google search said a lot of people were having this problem. I had the Ford dealership replace my tires 2 months ago and they said nothing about the swollen lug nuts.

Lug nuts swelled and we could not loosen them to remove the tire.

61 Wheel problem of the 2018 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/22/2023

Poor lug nut design I’m sure the dealership impacted these nuts on and did follow proper torque recommendations. Had a flat and can’t remove the tire without having to destroy the lug nut or pay a big expense to tow and fix it outrageous this is a known issue with these nuts I promise the dealership doesn’t follow proper procedures torque wise.

65 Wheel problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/23/2023

Ford two-piece lug nuts distort during installation/removal as a result of regular vehicle servicing, tire replacement or rotation, brake maintenance, and other maintenance requiring removal of tires. “swollen” lug nuts with Ford vehicles is a well known safety issue. Many service outlets, including dealers refuse to service tires due to lug nut issues. Due to this issue, it is impossible to determine if appropriate torque requirements are met during installation. This may result in broken lugs, improperly torqued nuts, stranded drivers on major roadways causing traffic hazards, or complete failure resulting in vehicle crash. This is a safety critical issue that should be addressed by fomoco, and not be a cost burden passed on to the consumer. Please take necessary steps to enact a recall campaign for these improperly designed two-piece lug nuts.

66 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/18/2023

Lug nut issues. If I were to have a flat tire on the highway, it would not be able to replaced by the spare because the lug nuts have swollen. I have replaced the lug nuts to the cost of $263. 00 from the dealer. No warnings except the last 2 times at the dealership, they did not rotate the tires because of the swollen lug nuts. Now, I need new tires (with on 22,000 miles on them) because of it. I have owned 7 different Ford vehicles, and never have I had to replace lug nuts! I am retired and don't drive long distances.

67 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/12/2023

When I took my car for it's most recent service I was told a tire rotation could not be performed because my car had "swollen" lug nuts. The service technician explained this is a common problem for many Ford models over several model years. The original lug nuts Ford put on these vehicles become misshapen over time making it difficult to remove and replace the lug nuts therefore making it impossible to perform tire maintenance without additional labor and total replacement of original lug nuts.

68 Wheel problem of the 2016 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/01/2023

The transmission failed at 116,00 miles with no warning. The warning light went on after the transmission failed and the car would not move. The dealer replaced the transmission at a cost of $5600. Also, the lug nuts swelled and could not be removed with the lug wrench supplied by Ford.

69 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/31/2023

I went to an oil change service center to get a tire rotation on my 2017 Ford Escape. They told me that they could not remove the tires for rotation because the lug nuts were swollen, which is a known issue. I had just had the Ford dealership put on new tires about 8 months before that and they never told me about a defect with the lug nuts or when or how to get them replaced. Now I have way personally to remove and replace the lug nuts plus I have been advised that Ford will charge over $200 to replace or $80 after market. Since this is a widely-known defect, why hasn't a recall been issued/.

70 Wheel problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/25/2023

Can not remove the lug nuts using the provided tool. As a result, could not change a flat tire and had to call a tow truck. The tow truck could not remove the lug nuts using additional professional tools. Extra expense and time was incurred to fix the flat tire due to failure of the Ford tool to remove the Ford lug nuts.
