1 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2019

The abs control module. Noticed many complaints. Had 1700 dollars of work to fix the issue and the brakes went out on me yesterday. Three weeks after the work. The abs and brake light came on again and the brakes failed on hwy 19 FL. Pulled over ,turned the car off like what I read online about this type a vehicle, started up and the brakes were back' took it home and parked it. When is Ford going to put a recall on this, when someone dies. Of course had I known about this defect I would have never purchased it. I have only had it for a little over a month and it has low mileage. .

2 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2018

Abs and brake light illuminate (with service brake system displayed) and brake pedal goes all the way to the floor. Brakes fail to manual brakes only, very sensitive and will lock the wheels up; touchy with no real feed back, just applied or off with significant pressure required. Happened when pulling into a gas station and nearly went past the pump, but skidded to a stop instead. System resets with each key cycle on/off. It is somewhat intermittent. While waiting for my Ford appointment (cavalier Ford in chesapeake, va), I duplicated the event several times under a controlled, open parking lot test and drive to the dealership. Dealership ran diagnostics, and could not duplicate. The recommend replacing brake lines, then master cylinder, then hcu. Repairs in order are $615, $1400, and over $4900. Diagnostics ran $130. . . With no definitive answer to my problem.

Failure Date: 12/29/2015

On ladson, SC road my brake light warning came on and I had no brakes. This happened three times before, but I pulled off the road and turned the engine off then turned back on and brakes worked. This time on ladson road, I could not get the brakes to work, and I had to call a tow truck to take the car home. I cannot drive the car, and feel stranded at home. I am an 82 year old widow. I have to get my son to take me where I need to go. He has to get off work to do this. I need my car. Please help. According to the Ford company it costs $5000. 00 to fix. I do not have $5000. 00. I live on a fixed income.

7 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2015

I was stopped at a drive thru line my car made a noise I don't know how to describe accurately with words. I looked down and my abs and brake light were on and the brake service needed was on the dash display. I put the car in park and turned the car off then on. All the same warnings were still there. I pulled forward slowly and when braking I still didn't stop in a reasonable time and almost completely missed the drive thru window. Needless to say a drive home at 10-15mph still felt like I was in danger of hitting someone because I could not judge stopping distance even with my foot applying full pressure on the brakes. From all the information I have found on line this seems a very apparent case of something Ford should be making a recall issue of high importance. I am hoping my reporting it here may help in preventing something very dangerous from happening in the future.

8 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2015

Driving down the highway with my family, a car swerved into our lane cutting us off. We hit the brakes, the abs and brake light came on and the brakes only worked when we slammed on them! had to have the car towed as it was not drivable. Mechanic said it needed a new abs control module. Ordered that part twice. Took car to car computer specialist - said car was could not be reprogrammed. Bill is now over $2,000 and it has been over 2 weeks. Mechanic called Ford (lots of complaints online about this issue). They said they could try to reprogram it, but it could take up to 10 hours and may not work. Ford said the last problem they saw like this didn't work and the owner had to trade in for a new car! not only could this incident have seriously harmed my family, but now I'm out of a car and $2,000!.

9 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2015

Brake abs brake light on and brakes do work right, I took it to a dealer and they said some kind of pump is bad and it cost $5000 to fit it. Lots of people having the same problem. I think Ford should recall those cars for safety. I don't think no brakes should cost $5000 to fit. I m scare to drive it.

10 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2014

I was driving my daughter home and pulling to a stop sign the brake and abs light as well as the service notification showed up and it became very difficult to brake. After taking it to the dealership I was informed that the hcu and control module assembly were defective.

11 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2014

Upon start-up brake warning light on and "service brakes system" message. Brake needed to be pushed very hard to have any effect. Codes c1473 and c1525 come up. Very expensive computer component replacements needed.

12 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2013

For about a month, my check brake system light would come on along with the abs and the red brake lights when I would start my car. Most of the time, I could turn the car off and wait for the electronics to turn off then start the car again and they wouldn't come on again. The lights came on a few times while driving and the brakes seem to have given out. I had to really push down all the way to get the car to slow down. I took it in but since it was random, they couldn't reproduce it or find anything wrong. Last week, the lights came on and wouldn't go off at all. I made an appointment at the dealership and took it in a few days later. The lights didn't come on. The dealership called to say I needed a new hydraulic control unit (hcu). The price was $4500. This was on top of the two diagnostic fees of $125 each I had already paid. Altogether I had to pay $4750 and my feh has 150,700 miles on it.

13 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2012

I bought this 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid from driver's world in virginia beach, va, and found serious problems with the brakes the minute I drove off the lot. Immediately after the first stop sign leaving the used car dealership, I gently pressed the brakes to slow down and felt as though the abs was locking up preventing me from even slowing down. When I let off of the brakes and pressed them again, I was able to brake just fine. I figured it may have been a fluke, so I continued driving for 2 hours from virginia beach to midlothian. I stopped at a stop light in midlothian when the brake light and the abs light both came on at the same time, and the vehicle began to roll. I pressed the brakes as hard as I could and the vehicle stopped rolling. I continued to drive for 2 miles in this condition of having to press the brakes extremely hard to get the vehicle to slow down. When I arrived at my destination, I turned the car off and back on, and the problem had gone away. I took the car back to driver's world 36 hours later. Driver's world kept the vehicle for two and a half weeks and claimed that they were unable to reproduce the problem. Therefore, even though the vehicle is under their 30day/1000mile warranty they will not make any repairs or give a refund. I picked the vehicle up from driver's world, and at the first stop light I came to the brake light came on. I took it back to driver's world, and they were able to find error codes c1471 and c1472, but they did not know what they meant so they told me to take the vehicle to Ford's service department. On the way to Ford's service department there was one occasion when I pressed the brakes and felt again that the abs was locking up preventing me from even slowing down. I let off of the brake and pressed it again, and I stopped just fine. At this time Ford still has the vehicle and is attempting to reproduce the problem.

14 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2012

Brakes became very "soft" and brake light, abs light and "service brake system" light appeared. Parked car for 5 hours, and when I restarted, the brakes seemed fine and the lights were off. Towed car to shop and had brakes replaced (@ 5%, so thought this was the "only" problem). 2 weeks later, I had the same problem. Repair shop did more diagnostics and research, and discovered the master brake cylinder / hcu issue that is frequently reported on-line.

15 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2012

The brakes failed while attempting to stop at a stop sign. The car went through the stop sign. A few minutes later while driving, the abs and service brakes light came on. I drove the vehicle directly to the dealer. They were not able to look at it until two days later. I was told the brake hoses needed replacing. I replaced them. The brakes seemed to be working. A few days later, I got the service brakes warning, as well as the service 4x4 warning in the info screen. The brakes seemed to be working. This time they replaced the wheel sensor at the dealer. About a week later, I noticed the brake pedal was hard when initially pressed and softened when the car was turned on. I was driving down the road about 35 mph when the service breaks and abs warning lights came on and the brakes only worked if I pressed really hard to the floor and then it was jerky. I drove a short distance to return from where I started and turned off the car. When I turned it on again a few minutes later, the warning lights were off and I had braking power again. I drove a few miles to the dealer and when I pulled into the parking lot to park, the brakes failed again and warning lights came on. This was a Sunday. They looked at the vehicle on Monday and noticed the hard brake pedal, but he lights were not on. They looked at the computer service codes and informed me I needed to replace the hydraulic control unit/abs module and possible the master cylinder at a price tag of $4300 - $5500+. The problem seems to be intermittent, but the vehicle is not safe to drive. I know I am not the only one with a 2005 hybrid that has experienced this major safety problem.

20 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2011

2005 Ford Escape Hybrid 127,000 "I-95" miles (it still averages 34. 3 mpg) great, reliable, low repair cost vehicle, until recently: brake warning light and "service brake system" warning appears on dash intermittently. Cavalier Ford in chesapeake, va quoted a repair cost of $3900. 00 to replace the abs module and hcu module ($3200. 00 parts, $700. 00 labor). After calling around the norfolk, va area, apparently the hcu module is only available through Ford (what a surprise), and no other repair shop will "touch" our 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid to replace the abs module. Wow, that's great to hear. . . That means that I'm basically a prisoner to Ford????.

24 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

Ford hybrid escape brake light keeps coming on. I have to turn it off and then back on to get the light out. Dealer says it's a ground fault and Ford has a new wiring harness, but I am required to pay for it, it's an '05 with less than 8,000 miles on it, yet I am to pay and fix Ford's problem, and we are talking brakes here, that Ford knows about and has already identified and has a fix for. It needs a recall. The electric steering has already failed once and had to have a new computer for this. Ford is hiding problems with the car.

25 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

1. Driving normally and then braking normally 2. The abs brake light comes on and the brakes "slip" (I. E. , the car slows, then "slips" forward again before the brakes re-engage and stop the car) occurs once or twice in a 30-mile stretch consequences: if you need to stop completely due to a pedestrian or car stopping in front of you, the car doesn't stop fully. It slides after you've pressed the brakes and the abs overrides your braking. 3. No repair has been undertaken yet.
