1 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2016

Brakes suddenly fail. When you are driving down the road the power assist to the brake fails unexpectantly and you must use extreme force to bring the car to a stop. This is intermittent and they will work again after the car is shut off. I have found many complaints of this on line. It is only a matter of time before someone is in a very serious accident. Not only did I find many complaints but these were across several years of production.

When the error message displayed, there was no pressure on the brake pedal, the power brakes failed, and in order to get the brakes to work at all, he had to press the pedal to the floor. The consumer expererienced a loss of power, the inside lights dimmed and the radio cut out. It was determined the battery needed to be replaced. Four months later, the sporadic brake system message illuminated. The dealer was unable to find a problem. Updated 08/24/jb.

The contact also mentioned that he was able to stop the vehicle by using the emergency brake. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offered any assistance since the vehicle was not included on recall NHTSA campaign id number: 07v156000 (component: service brakes, hydraulic:antilock:control unit/module). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage 64,000. Pm.

6 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

The brakes fail on a regular basis while slowing down from speeds between 10 and 35 mph. It occurs as a sudden release of braking pressure while stepping on the brake pedal to slow down. At that time a momentary warning light comes on for several seconds and the system appears to go into a fail-safe mode that allows manual operation of the brakes. This causes a large increase in braking distance and I consider it very dangerous. This failure seems to be related to the hybrid braking system and may be common to other hybrid vehicles. After stopping the warning light goes away and the brakes will again function normally. The failure does not occur continuously but it does occur almost every day that it is driven. The car has been in a repair shop numerous times with many part replaced but the problem continues to evade our fleet mechanics. This is an inherent problem with this vehicle and commonly known where there are large fleets of hybrid vehicles. My CO-worker drives the same type of Escape Hybrid and he has the same failure. Please investigate with Ford and/or Toyota. A similar problem has been seen with Toyota prius in out fleet.

7 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

Multiple continued instances of complete brake failure. Since the initial occurrence, already documented on this site (odi id number : 10349431), it randomly recurred at least 10 times over the past 2 years, including 3 times in a single trip in June 2012 and two additional times in July 2012. The brake failures typically occurred during hot weather when running the air conditioner, but not always. Every time we thought we'd "figured out" a pattern to the failures, the brakes would go out at a different time than they ever had before -- at a higher speed, or while slowing for a stop light going uphill versus when we were trying to slow to a stop at the base of a steep hill with a marina in front of us. We finally sold the car fearing for the safety of our family, others on the roadways, and our finances. No wonder Ford quit making these vehicles. . .

8 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2010

Braking system defects in Ford Escape Hybrid 2006. The brakes fail, multiple trips to the dealership have not resolved the problem. The problem has gotten worse.

9 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

Catastrophic brake failure causing property damage and damage to car. We have taken our vehicle to a Ford dealership twice in past year to find out why our brakes "catch" causing a momentary loss of braking. They told us both times that they couldn't find any problem and sent us out without an answer or fix. Then yesterday what we feared finally happened; during braking the brake pedal suddenly went to the floor and the brakes failed causing the vehicle to plow into a garage door. The car is back at the dealership now and even during drop-off they told us that this couldn't happen and that we were mistaken.

He has not taken the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The failure occurred without warning. The current and failure mileages were 80,592. Brakes failed for the second time. The vehicle was taken in for the brake repair after the first time about 4 weeks ago but was told by the Ford dealership that there wasn't anything wrong with the brakes. After the second time they now have to order parts which are on back order in order to make the repair.
