1 Body problem of the 2012 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/22/2018

My 2012 Ford Escape Hybrid has rust covering the entire underside of the vehicle. I never noticed it until yesterday when I noticed some rust under the wheel well. When I looked under the car I was horrified. The rust is really bad and it's eating through to the interior. When I looked closely I saw rust under both seats on the brackets. When I looked under the carpet I can see that it's affecting the interior upholstery. It is totally unacceptable to have this amount of rust on a vehicle that is six years old. I think it might be dangerous to drive the car. The entire underside needs to be replaced. I checked around online last night and it will likely cost a lot to repair the problem if it can be repaired at all. Last year I did notice that the vehicle was always humid on the inside but I didn't think to look for rust on a car this new. The part that really angers me is that there are only 36,000 miles on the car and I planned to drive it for years. It had an extended warranty and service contract with Ford. The warranty expired last year. I really think it is unsafe to drive due to the extent of the rust. Should I take it to the dealership even though I know they won't fix it? what should I do? I will take some photos in the daylight and add them to this report.

6 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/12/2017

Last week while driving my 2005 escape my right rear wheel well basically rotted out and has messed up the shock and strut assembly and knocked the tire loose causing to rub against the shock and smoke, and all you could smell was burning rubber. . As I am reading all the forums out there is see this is a very common problem and potently dangerous issue. My vehicle only has 115,200 miles on it, no way should this have happened. I bought this car used and purchased the warranty (hoping they cover repairs), my question is with so many complaints for the same issue why isn't Ford doing a recall this is obviously a manufacturer problem. This is totally unacceptable. I will be contacting a lawyer to see if any legal action can be taken. Very sad Ford!!!!! I am a single mom of 3 working two jobs and is now without a car, having to rent a car at $300/wk. . . On top of other bills and buying groceries, hmmm. . So Ford you tell me if this was one of your family members how would you feel if you knew they had to choose to rent a car to get to and from work and kids to school or buying groceries?? all because of a know defect with your product!.

9 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/12/2016

The rear passenger wheel well has corroded very severely. The shock absorber is pushing into the interior wheel cover, causing it to become dislodged. I was driving on a city street, about 35 mph, when I hear a loud scraping sound coming from the right rear side of my escape. I noticed that the interior wheel cover was dislodged and moving around. I pulled over into a local park to examine what was causing the very loud scraping sound. I could see that the right rear wheel well area was very rusted and flaky. I drove home about 10-15 mph, all the time the vehicle was making a very loud bumping and scraping sound. I consulted a Ford mechanic and was told that the vehicle could not be driven safely. Ford needs to recall the many hundreds of Ford escapes that have rusted out passenger side wheel wells, that can cause sudden loss of steering control when the shock absorber pushes into the car and the vehicle collapses onto the right rear wheel.

10 Body problem of the 2012 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/09/2016

Traveling on 4 lane street and making a right turn onto a 2 lane street; as I was making the turn my locked driver side door flew open-terrifying. Just that am had read in the local paper there was a recall of these cars for this reason. Got home and called vista Ford of oxnard where I had purchased the vehicle they said my VIN number did not have a recall on it but scheduled an apt for the following Wednesday-earliest I could get. Saturday am I called the Ford 800 number and they got me in right away to dch Ford in thousand oaks. When I arrived the technician -rj drove the car and said the door didn't open; he repeatedly said the door must have been open and I insisted that it was closed and locked we had a bit of a sparring session as he insisted nothing was wrong with the car and wanted $150 to take it apart. I noted there is a recall but since mine was not listed he said it would be $547 to change the lock-I am totally incensed and insisted that Ford knew there is a problem and they should change it rather than jeopardize my safety. What are my options to resolve this issue? have a call in to an attorney who specializes in this area but really don't want to go that route.

11 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/25/2016

My well maintained 2005 Escape Hybrid developed a rattling sound on July 26, 2016. At first the rattle in the right rear happened only on bumps in the road. I thought it was my car jack coming loose in its compartment. I checked that and the jack was all secured, not rattling. I continued driving home and the rattle became a banging sound, and the right rear inside wheel area started to rattle and move towards the interior as I drove. When I got home I looked around the right rear wheel well area and was shocked to see how extremely rusted it is. The other wheel wells show very little rust. I looked up the problem on a Ford owners website and found that many many other people have had this same problem. It is a safety issue because some people report that the rusted out shock absorber mount breaks loose and the vehicle body collapses onto the wheel, sending the car out of control. I can't believe that there isn't a recall on this common problem in the '05 Escape Hybrid vehicles. I cannot drive my well maintained car because of the mechanical banging, the high potential for loss of control, causing an accident and personal injury. I'm attaching photos of the right rear wheel well and the right front wheel well to show that there is a definite defect in the right rear. Please give this complaint your immediate attention, and alert other Ford escape owners of this imminently very dangerous situation.

12 Body problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/14/2016

I heard a loud clunky from the right rear wheel well, louder when going over bumps. Upon inspection I observed the entire wheel well was missing it's protective coating and flaking rust/corrosion was everywhere with exposed white fiberglass sheeting visible the right rear shock is exposed, missing bolts and with the bracket missing the other side of the care (left rear) does not exhibit this rust. With palpation of the right rusted rear well a person can move the remaining pieces. This is very unsafe and can not imagine why there is not a recall as other reviews online describe the same problem. I called Ford: no assistance or recall as of this date. I reside in wisconsin and took care to remove underbody salt to no avail, evidentially.

13 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/09/2016

Rear window just exploded. Car was parked at my daughter's school. Campus security called her out of class thinking someone hit her car. Security cameras showed nothing. She had used rear defroster on her way to school. Car was parked for at least 45 minutes before window exploded. Temperature slightly above freezing.

14 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/13/2015

We noticed a clunking noise coming from the rear end of the vehicle. Upon inspection, we discovered the rear passenger wheel well was completely rusted out and the strut is barely attached. The rust holes are so large, that insulation is showing, and the strut is hitting the plastic piece going into the trunk space. The vehicle was deemed unsafe to drive by a mechanic. While researching this issue, I have found multiple online forums about this problem. It is always the same area (rear passenger side) and is causing safety hazards, such as ruptured tires and unstable steering. This is a safety issue that Ford needs to recall!.

15 Body problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

Pre mature rust on hatchback door and rear quareter panel almost every owner of same car have same issue.

16 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/07/2014

Rear passenger wheel house and strut assembly fastening bracket exhibit severe corrosion and possible detachment from vehicle body. Such an incident is likely to result in a loss of vehicle control at cruising speed. Previous repairs performed by prior owner. Body shop consulted and replacement of affected parts is not economically feasible.

17 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

While driving - at any speed - a rattling sound started from the right rear passenger side of the car. Rattle got louder over time and became a loud banging sound every time we hit even the slightest imperfection in the road. Upon inspection the entire right rear wheel well is rusted through; the only thing holding in the shock on that side is light padding / insulation. Mechanic indicated car was not safe for driving, as we could face a loss of control of the vehicle. We have found a body shop who quoted us at $1200 for the repair. I called Ford motor company who said there is no recall on this, despite the fact that the same issue was recalled on Ford Escape Hybrids from 2001-2004. We will be holding on to all receipts, with the hope that Ford will do the right thing and issue a recall / reimbursement.

18 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a loud banging noise coming from the rear passenger wheel area. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic. The technician discovered that the rear passenger side wheel well and shock tower were corroded. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 69,000.

19 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/07/2014

While driving on city streets, we heard a hollow thumping sound coming from the rear passenger-side wheel well whenever we went over a small bump. After externally inspecting the wheel well, we discovered that it was extremely rusted, and appeared to be in danger of completely disintegrating. Medium-sized pieces were flaking off with only a slight tug. An identical issue caused the recall of Ford escape models from the years 2001-2004, but Ford representatives to which I have spoken have indicated that they are not considering a recall for the 2005 model year. This is an extremely dangerous situation, and could cause crashes if shock or axle supports fail at highway speeds. This is clearly a design flaw, since this model is less than 10 years old with only 111,000 miles. Others have indicated that Ford is aware of this problem, but refuses to address the safety concerns.

20 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/12/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle vibrated violently and made a loud noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the rear passenger wheel well was completely corroded and the shock absorber was no longer attached and the wheel well needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 139,000.

21 Body problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/02/2014

Both rear quarter panels are prematurely rusting and I have seen the same exact problem with multiple Ford Escape Hybrids.

22 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/07/2014

Wheel house rotted out shock/spring broke thru wheel house hitting on hybrid battery.

23 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/05/2014

The passenger side rear wheel well has rusted through and it sounds like a bomb going off when you drive over a manhole cover. I was told this was typical on this type of car. Only on the passenger side, never on the driver side.

24 Body problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/24/2014

Right rear shock absorber mounting has gotten weak and started to flex. The wheel well above it has lost the integity of its plastic coating and has caused it to rust out enormously. Shock mount and wheel well need to be replace. From doing some searching online this is a major problem for the 04-06 escape and can lead to a failure of the mounting and make the vehicle unsafe to drive.

25 Body problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/23/2014

We noticed banging coming from the right rear wheel well. After investigating, we found a number of small rusted out holes into the trunk from just that wheel well. The banging was the shock mount and the shock absorber hitting the well. The rusted out area has grown. There is no other indication of significant rust on the undercarriage. We've been told that this is the result of a leak from the hybrid battery; others, via message boards and the like, have reported the same problem. We were afraid that the shock absorber would hit the wheel and cause an accident so we took it off the road. Given we need the vehicle and don't want to sell an otherwise serviceable SUV for scrap, we hope you can persuade Ford to recall this model and fix this dangerous problem as soon as possible.

26 Body problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

Right rear wheel well fully rusted out, causing shock absorber to hit metal. Holes you can see through the jack compartment. Loud knocking.

27 Body problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/25/2013

Right rear wheel well completely rusted out and collapsed, exposing shock. Shock is broken. You can see through wheel well via the jack compartment. Unsafe to drive. Rough estimates are $3000-4000, replacing wheel well, shock, and right rear quarterpanel. Left wheel well intact and good.

28 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

I was en route to a repair shop to check a possible u-joint noise, and hit a repair bump in the road when my car made a very scary clunk at the right/rear wheel. It continued to make a banging /clunking noise. I continued on to the repair shop traveling at 25mph with my flashers on. They took the vehicle for a short test drive and confirmed the banging/clunking noise. They then put the vehicle on a hoist for a visual inspection and found the under-body frame around the right/rear shock mount had rusted away, and the remaining portion that was still attached to the shock was snapping and banging with any movement of the right/rear wheel. Since then I have not driven my vehicle. The repair shop has informed me that they have seen 5 more escapes since then ,and only one had the same problem. It was also an Escape Hybrid. They also advised me to contact your website and make a complaint.

29 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/09/2013

I was driving home and slowed down to go over some railway tracks. As I went over the tracks I heard a "thud" coming from the rear of the vehicle. The sound continued as I went over bumps, and I discovered once I arrived home that the passenger side rear wheel well was completely rusted out and the shock was unattached at the top. Since then the top of the shock has pierced through the interior cabin wall.

30 Body problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/06/2013

We have a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid - and just this morning, upon hearing an odd rattle coming from the right rear when dropping off my daughter at the local veterinary hospital, I inspected the right rear wheel housing and discovered, to my shock, that under the factory black inner fender undercoating, which was hanging off, the upper shock mount was almost completely perforated with rust, to the point that I could feel a flow of cold air from the a/c exiting the cabin through the perforations. I called ganley Ford as soon as they opened, but the body shop won't be open until Monday. This is my wife's primary car, and with what I've discovered, I'm reluctant to have her, or anyone, drive it until the problem's addressed - and the extent of the corrosion is astonishing. With a 400++ pound battery located between the left and right upper shock mounts, and with the extent of the corrosion I just found, I'm equally concerned for the left rear upper shock mount and body pan integrity, as well as for the hybrid system and battery pack. Please help me to get into immediate contact with the proper Ford zone representative to get a look at this issue and decide where to go from here - this is a premium hybrid SUV that I thoroughly researched before selecting to purchase, and now I'm afraid to even move it from my parking deck at the office. This car, and other escapes suffering from this same issue, are accidents waiting to happen. A simple web search shows that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of escapes suffering the same issues. This is a critical safety issue and I would ask sincerely that NHTSA investigate and act quickly. Cordially, chris esker - cell 330. 714. 9749 or email at ccesker@gmail. Com.

31 Body problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/15/2013

Right rear wheel housing rusts completely through allowing the shock to detach from the vehicle. After an online search this is a very common incident. After contacting the local Ford dealer, there is a back-order on the right rear wheel housing with no expected date of delivery. This is the only wheel housing on the vehicle that is rusting out and causing issues. The only time you start to realize that there is an issue is if you start the hear a "clunk" coming from the car, however; there is a rubberized undercoat that prevents you from seeing the damage until it is too late or a knowledgeable mechanic with the issue looks specifically at the wheel housing.

32 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

Right rear well corroded extensively. 4 inch hole exposing high voltage battery in trunk to water, salt, snow. Dealer states that vehicle is unsafe to drive due to risk of collapse of struts and risk of explosion/fire from high voltage battery exposure. Quotes more than $4000 to repair this vehicle with only 59,510 miles. Rear bumper and rear suspension both compromised. Rear bumper has no support on right side risking passenger injury in accident. Rear shock strut collapsing. Request investigation and recall action.

33 Body problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

Since the first time I experienced a braking failure incident I have done a lot of research&visits to mechanics to retrieve codes thrown from the car off diagnostic machines. Replacing the hcu carries a premium price tag of $5k-7k. Prior to the first accident, there is no obvious way that I could have damaged the hcu with my very normal driving habits (I. E. No history of towing, no long downhill braking)&the hcu is not a component susceptible to wear to the point of early failure. I believe that the Escape Hybrids braking system is defective by design (hence the TSB)&fault lies with Ford. I consider this brake failure very serious&a problem that Ford had never bothered to notify me about or recall. My attempts to get Ford's attention on this matter have been fruitless. To summarize NHTSA is not concerned b/c nobody has gotten killed by these defective brakes. Ford claims no responsibility for this very serious&significantly dangerous design flaw. After several episodes of brake failure I found TSB 05-8-5 (8/5/05 NHTSA id#10017553:escape hybrid vehicles exhibit the yellow abs&red e- brake warning lamps illuminating after the engine is started,&an increase in brake pedal effort)Ford claims no responsibility to deal w/the problem. Its not safe to drive w/o the repair,it had no value being broken,&I did not have the conscience to sell the vehicle w/a dangerous problem. Fords failure to proactively address this safety issue is rather appalling. Ford abandoned me w/a$7,000 bill to repair a problem that is solely related to their poor design. First accident description:abs warning light&service engine light illuminated on cluster. "service brake system"&"regenerative braking disabled" illuminated on message board. On the highway in rush hour traffic, upon extreme braking, brakes failed to stop the vehicle in time to avoid a rear-end collision with the vehicle stopped in front of me.

34 Body problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/30/2012

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the wheel well began to separate from the frame. Upon further inspection the contact noticed that there was massive rust in the area. The vehicle was taken to a personal mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was advised not to drive the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 130,000.
