After starting the vehicle,(vehicle is stationary) the abs lights, and brake lights turn on. The brakes go into a safety mode, and don't work unless you push the pedal all the way down to the floor. I can almost roll down my driveway with the brake pedal pushed down all of the way. My driveway has a slight angle to is. Not much of an angle though. The vehicle is not safe to drive on the highway if you don't know if the brakes are going to go out or not.

2008 Ford escape hydraulic control unit failure. Check brake system, abs, and emergency brake lights all game on. Drove car with limited brakes to mechanic who got codes c1978 and u2023. $4,700 part. This seems very dangerous and really disappointed that Ford has not done a recall on this item.
Brakes failed at 10 mph. All brake lights system on dash turned on. Brake was hard and unable to stop vehicle when approaching stop sign. Brakes then released and got soft and would not stop vehicle. Hydraulic cylinder unit failed & master cylinder needs to be replaced. Was approaching a major intersection if brakes failed a few seconds later may have been a fatal accident.
Yellow abs light and red emergency brake lights illuminated while driving. Brake petal went soft to the point where braking was difficult. A Ford service center diagnosed the problem and indicated that the hydraulic control unit (hcu) needs to be replaced. The part costs $4800 dollars and the total repair is $5300. This is not an uncommon problem for the Escape Hybrid. And in my case, renders the vehicle essentially worthless since the cost of the repair is slightly more than the value of tahe vehicle itself. I've been given no alternatives or options.
Brake warning lights and brakes feels firm but becomes difficult to stop. Other times it feels just fine. Do not feel save, no longer able to use the car.

I was driving in my work parking garage when I got a, "check brake system" warning on my dash, and a couple of dashboard lights lit up, including the emergency brake light. I suddenly realized that I had no brakes, and I was pressing my brake pedal to the floor in an attempt to stop the car. Luckily I was going about 5-10 mph and there were no cars or people in front of me. I was able to continue around the parking garage until the car slowed, then used my emergency brake to stop the car. I started reading the manual trying to figure out what went wrong, and that didn't help. I turned the car back on and there were no warnings or lights on my dash, so I tentatively moved the car. The brakes worked perfectly. I drove it to a nearby mechanic shop to have it looked at before it acted up again. They said I needed to take it to a dealership since it was a hybrid and they were getting high voltage battery codes that they weren't experienced with. The dealership mechanics spend the next 2 days trying to figure out the issue and recreate the problem. They were finally able to recreate it and told me the abs control module had an electrical issue and needs to be replaced, for approximately $2,000, due to no fault of my own. Everything else on the car is in great condition, and my car only has 100,000 miles, so I am going to foot the bill.

Vehicle brakes fail for no apparent reason, then eventually begin working for no apparent reason. No warning is given that anything is wrong with the brakes (I. E. No brake light, and no "check engine" light). In addition, the "all ok" light remains green, indicating that nothing is wrong. This occurs when the vehicle is moving at any speed (I. E above 35 mph or below 5 mph). The vehicle eventually comes to a stop, but only after a lengthy deceleration distance.
The abs brake light and red brake lights come on and I have very limited braking. Almost like braking on an icy road and at times almost collided with some cars. Then it's not on the next time I start it up again, only to come on again on a different day or so. Brought the car in to my mechanic, but since the lights weren't on at that time, they could not diagnose it. They did however check out my brakes and said everything looked fine. I have 2 small children in my car and drive 20 miles each way everyday to work and their school, this is not safe!! the lights go and and then off the next time, when the lights are off, the brakes are just fine! there is something defective here that is happening and my mechanic cannot figure it out!!! this has been going on for 7 months now!! I will submit the date below of the last time it happened.
Abs & parking brake warning lights, warning tone & regen brake message are displayed. When this has happened the brake performance became "grabby" and over time the brakes were dangerously bad. For several months if I stopped the vehicle, turned off ignition and restarted, the warnings would go away and the brakes would function normally. I informed the Ford technician the last time I had regular service of this problem and they found " no issue" with brakes. I took vehicle back to Ford 06/22/2017 and they told me the hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced at a cost in excess of $5,800. 00. I will discard this vehicle and replace it with a non -Ford product.
While driving (not braking) the car on an interstate highway for about one hour, the abs and brake lights illuminated on dash along with the message "service brake system" and a ping sound. When brakes were next applied they had become very soft and not as responsive. I pulled into a safe area and turned the ignition off. After waiting a few minutes, the car was restarted and all of the above mentioned lights and messages were gone and the brakes were working correctly. Continued to drive again and the message didn't reoccur for several hours. The problem has happened several more times on both highways and rural roads and always fixed by turning the car off and letting it sit for a couple of minutes. The problems don't initiate when we are actually braking. Took the car to our Ford dealers service department where they ran a diagnostics test. The report they gave us said " verified customers concern. Retrieve coda 1524, 1526. Brake pedal travel sensor related. Also retrieve codes for traction battery cooling fans. " the service dept recommended replacing the brake master cylinder (at a cost of $2078. 95) and the hybrid battery cooling fans (at a cost of $716. 99).
86,000 milage. Abs sevice light on for couple months. Past 2 days regen brakes disabled message on, and red brake warning light on, brakes a little stiff in operation thus far. Apparently this is a frequent problem, and $5000 to fix. Can I rely on the mechanical backup braking? even if so I am now not charging my hv battery, so will be just carrying around a heavy load, with no benefit to the co2 environment. When will Ford be required to recal & remedy this?.
Brake light intermittently comes on. Abs light also comes on - loss of braking ability at highway speeds when abs comes on.
Last week I went outside and got in my car to run some errands and when I started the car the red brake light, orange abs light, and the chimer stating "regenerative brake disengaged" "check brakes" began to light. The brakes are working (knock on wood) but are tricky to operate. This morning I took the car to the mechanic and they stated it was most likely in need of a new hcu costing around $5,000 (I am going to get the vehicle checked one more time before parking it for good). As I read the complaints on NHTSA's web site, it appears folks at NHTSA are fully knowledgeable about this safety hazard (as each page is filed with same, if not worse, complaints) and are not going to act until someone gets killed. It is also blatantly obvious that Ford is not going to act either. The 2008 Escape Hybrid has been a great vehicle, until now (132,000 miles). The price to fix this issue is slightly less than what the car is worth and compared to all other brands made it very few miles. Now it is time to turn my outrage regarding this issue over to my state representatives. I cannot believe their are no class action lawsuits before someone gets killed (it is a matter of time, if not already the case). This issue should warrant a recall, they are brakes for god's sake.
Sudden and immediate loss of braking system without any warning lights etc. I had started car, backed down my driveway and entered roadway when abs and brake warning lights appeared and I had no braking system operating. I had to be towed to a service station.
My vehicle has 75,000 miles on it. I bought it oct. 9,2015 with 72,000 miles on it. In may 2016 the engine started cutting out and the message would read "service engine" along with a yellow wrench appearing on the dash. I had the vehicle taken to the local Ford dealer and was told I needed a harness. I paid 1004. 00 for the new harness and they also installed a fan for the hybrid system. The car did it again a few days later and I had it towed back to the dealer. The service department told me they had made a mistake and had to call Ford to get the correct codes to fix the car. I was told it was done and picked it up. The same thing happened less than 4 days later. I had the car towed again and let the dealership send my car home with a mechanic for 2 days. I was told nothing is wrong and picked it up. I now have the abs light coming on, the red triangle safety light coming on, the red brake light coming on, the low tires light coming on (it stays on) and the yellow wrench light coming on. At night when I turn on my right blinker the high beams come on. The dealership says there is nothing wrong and no codes come up on their machine. When I brake I have to push very hard and sometimes the brakes lock up on me. I have avoided accidents so far but I am concerned at this point. I do not want to be injured or killed and I certainly do not want to injure or kill anyone in an accident that could be avoided, if Ford had a mechanic that knows what is happening with the car. When I am driving the car will suddenly shut off in traffic and I have to stop, put the car in park and restart it. This is good for about 10 minutes before it acts up again.
Brakes weak on manual mode almost no stopping power, codes c1320. , hydraulic travel sensor circuit, hcu, abs light on, service brakes lights on, no hcu compressor coming on at pre start any more. Suggested need new hcu, at a part cost of $3889. 00 plus 10 hours of labor to bleed system putting repair cost over $5k, car blue books at $3. 5k, how can this be feasible, thanks for the disposable car Ford. !!!.
Vehicle dash brake light came on intermittently. Took vehicle to dealer for diagnostic. Dealer advised master cylinder needed to be replaced for $2500. In adition, hydraulic control unit might also need to be replaced, for an additional $4000, but the dealer could not tell until the master cylinder was replaced. At this time, there are no brakes and the vehicle can only be stopped using the hand brake and is not safe to drive.
One morning, no prior warning, or issues with brakes or mechanical systems what so ever, I start to drive to work and after turning out of my neighborhood onto a major street my brake lights light up and at the next stop sign my brakes don't work! I pressed all the way down and ended up using the emergency brake not to go through the stop sign. Someone could have died for sure, and it was a heart stopping scare! I pulled over and walked back home. Looked up online and found many complaints about this vehicles brakes suddenly going out and that it is a $5k fix!! I had the escape towed back to my house. The next morning I wanted to try a few things to eliminate certain problems I found online. Now, the keyless entry doesn't work, I manually open the door, stick the key in, no lights, no sound, nothing. I turn the key and again absolutely nothing. We hook up cables and it starts right away and everything works. No brake warning lights so I try a slow drive in the neighborhood, brake lights go on after about 1/2 a mile and the brakes are very soft, have to depress to the floor just to slow down from 15 mph. I called Ford and they said just bring it in for diagnosis, for $200/hr minimum 2 hours just to tell me what's wrong with it!! no thank you, $400 to tell me it's a $5k problem when the car's worth maybe $6k private party! so I now have a worthless hybrid sitting in my driveway. Do not buy a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid!!! read all the complaints major safety issue - Ford has not recalled!!.
The brake light and abs light have both come on. I have half the braking power in my vehicle.
Driving on city street when "service brake system" message was displayed as well as abs and brake lights on dash. Vehicle had no brakes and emergency brake had to be used to stop vehicle.
Driving car and brakes failed completely. Had to jump on the brakes to get any traction whatsoever. Was fortunately able to use the emergency brake before I got into an accident. Yellow abs and red brake lights are on, along with messages of check brake system and regen brakes disabled. Appears to be a common problem with Escape Hybrid that it is the hydraulic control unit - a part to repair which is more expensive than the car is worth.
Nearly impossible to brake, major safety issue with the hydrolic regenerative breaking system and abs. While driving the vehicle on city streets, speeds between 0-40mph the brake pedal will become very hard and impossible to press with loss of braking. When this happens I am forced to rapidly release the brake pedal and brake again (pumping) the brakes in order to stop. On several occasions this pumping of the brakes has cause the break pedal to go from hard/impossible to push to completely soft hitting the floor with no braking capabilities. On these occasions I am forced to pull of the road quickly, downshift to low gear and even use the emergency brake to avoid causing an accident. Only about 60% of the time when this event occurred does the abs light, brake light and service brake system warning indicators illuminate or display. When this occurres I am usually forced to turn the engin off, remove the key, let the system purge (makes noise) after the vehicle sits for a couple minutes and then restart the vehicle in order to keep driving and fix the issue. Sometimes it fixes to issue for the rest of the driving time while others only work temporarily and the issue returns almost immediately. I feel that this braking issue is a huge safety concern for my family and I and our piece of mind in the safety of this vehicle is not good. As an additional note this brake issue only became evident after we had another recall issue fixed on this vehicle for stalling. Before that fix we never had any braking issues.
My abs and brake light came on and brakes became manual. When I checked on the codes (c1478, c1313 & c1480) I found that there are quite a few complaints of this exact problem, that the repair cost is ridiculous at approximately $5000. And that this is a very common problem with this 2006 Ford Escape Hybrids. This is a safety hazard and should be a recall by Ford!.
Abs light, regen light check, brake light and emergency brake lights came on and brakes failed and worked in degraded mode. Brought to dealer, they advised recalibration and internal bleed procedure, abs module reflash and calibration, which was performed at a cost of $221. 49 advised if code returns , hcu replacement will be needed at $5400. !!!! outrageous, the car was bought new and maintained meticulously. Car now has 79,397 and we are deathly afraid to drive it as the brakes may fail. When the brakes failed the car was restarted on the peaking lot after being stopped for 15 minutes.
Upon starting up the car, and after accelerating, the brake lights and anti skid lights came on and there was a chime. Upon pressing on the brakes, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and the car did not brake. Luckily I was on a side street both times and had room to coast to a stop without hitting anything. This happened twice in the span of three days. Upon having it towed to the Ford dealer, they stated the abs module had failed and they replaced it.

The brakes on our 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid began grinding around February 2016. We had the pads and rotors replaced and it braked better, but within a mile after leaving the Ford service center the brake light came on and shortly after - while moving - the brake pedal went to the floor and there were no brakes. We had to coast to a stop and pull over. When the car is stopped and turned on and off, you can sometimes get the brakes to work for less than a mile. Its so unsafe, we had it towed to service centers for estimates. Two Ford dealers and one other service place investigated the problem thoroughly and all came back saying the hydraulic control unit must be replaced at an average cost of $4,500. Otherwise, we like the car, but this one repair is greater than the blue book value and is very dangerous.
Went to press on the brakes to not hit an animal and yellow abs light illuminates, red brake light illuminates, and "service brake system" message appeared and the car just slid. Once driving your abs system is deactivated causing the car to just slide when pressing on the brakes. An obdi code reader indicates c1478, c1479, and c1480. Ford recommends changing hydraulic control unit costing over 5 thousand dollars. When unlocking the car or turning the key ignition to the on position you hear the brakes trying to build up pressure and then you hear a loud grinding noise and that is when all the messages appear on the dash. This seems to be a reoccurring issue with Ford Escape Hybrids made from 2005 through 2008 according to many customers. No recall yet.
On ladson, SC road my brake light warning came on and I had no brakes. This happened three times before, but I pulled off the road and turned the engine off then turned back on and brakes worked. This time on ladson road, I could not get the brakes to work, and I had to call a tow truck to take the car home. I cannot drive the car, and feel stranded at home. I am an 82 year old widow. I have to get my son to take me where I need to go. He has to get off work to do this. I need my car. Please help. According to the Ford company it costs $5000. 00 to fix. I do not have $5000. 00. I live on a fixed income.
The brake system is very irritating because my abs and brake light are on at weird times and to fix they said it would cost me $4500. That's ridiculous I can't afford something like that. It also just started spitting gas out at me when I go to fill it up. Did it to me twice the other day and I have no idea what the reasoning was for that never had happen before. Then when I go to drove off sometimes the vehicle likes to make a pop noise once or twice not sure what that's all about. These cars are have more problems then they are worth.
Tl- the contact owns a 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that while another driver was driving the vehicle's brake pedal was jammed to the floor while driving approximately 50 mph. The failure happened without warning. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic where they diagnosed that the brakes needed to be bled. The vehicle was repaired, however the failure recurred. The abs regen brakes light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brakes needed to be bled properly and tubing needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however the failure recurred again. The contact stated that vehicle was returned to the dealer where it was diagnosed as the hydraulic control unit. The vehicle was not repaired. The manuafactuer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000. The vehicle's VIN was not provided. Kh.
2008 Ford Escape Hybrid with 109k miles on it. Two recent incidents where the yellow abs and red brake lights came on, with messages of check brake system and regen brakes disabled. Brakes became completely useless and vehicle became dangerous to operate. I was able to let the vehicle sit and retry and the lights didn't come on. Brought in for service at dealership and they found codes c1478 and c1480. They're quoting me $5,300 to replace the hydraulic control unit. After the dealer diagnosed the problem, the check brake system warning message is on all the time and the vehicle has no brakes. I've left it at the dealership because it is no longer safe to drive. . Read more...
Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that the brake light illuminated and the brake pedal failed to respond several times. The contact had to apply force to the brake pedal due to the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for several repairs and the condition continued with the brake pedal failing to respond when applied. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who said that the condition was common and that they were not able to replicate and diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000. Dyd.
Purchased vehicle with abs light on, brake light on, service brakes soon message, regen disabled message. Brake pedal goes nearly to the floor and no braking assistance is given. Extreme pressure is required to stop. All braking components appear to be sound by visual inspection. Abs failure should not cause all braking assistance to shut down. Failsafe mode is not safe. Internet search reveals that this problem is rampant on these vehicles.
