As I was approaching an intersection and red light, my brakes suddenly stopped working. I literally had to stand on the brake and it finally stopped moving. I continued to drive home at less than 10 mph and had to let off the gas in order to slow the vehicle down to attempt to use the brakes and car would shake when brake was applied. Took to mechanic who checked the code and it was the travel sensor.

Tl the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While preparing to make a left turn with the brake pedal depressed, the regenerative braking system indicator illuminated. The contact had to pump the brake pedal almost to the floorboard to stop the vehicle. The failure occurred intermittently. The contact called preferred Ford (located at 1401 s beacon blvd, grand haven, mi 49417, (616) 842-0600) where an appointment was scheduled. The contact stated that since the indicator was no longer illuminated, he had not taken the vehicle to a dealer. Each time the indicator illuminated, the failure occurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but did not assist. The approximate failure mileage was 57,000.
I had all the brakes stuck while driving. Abs and brake warning lamp went off along with regen brakes disabled. Mechanic`s diagnosis was abs pump and control module need to be replaced. Cost about 4500$ total.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving 35 mph with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle failed to come to a complete stop. The brake and abs warning indicators illuminated. In addition, the check brake system and system regen brake disable warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was contacted, but the contact was unable to speak with a representative. The failure mileage was 211,000.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While the contact's son was driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle failed to stop when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact also heard an abnormal noise. The contact was able to stop the vehicle after depressing the brake pedal multiple times. The contact stated that the emergency brake, check brake system, and abs warning indicators were illuminated. The contact stated that the regenerative brakes disabled warning message was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the abs module needed to be replaced. The contact called newins bay shore Ford (219 w main st, bay shore, NY 11706, (631) 665-1300) and informed them of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 90,500.
Vehicle displayed "service emissions system" warning immediately after driving off the lot. After replacement of all emissions parts, vehicle still intermittently displays this warning and occasional "stop safely now" messages causing the engine to shut down. Vehicle also displays "service brake system" warnings daily despite having entire breaking system replaced causing failure of abs breaking system resulting in brake pedal going all the way to the floor and taking a much longer distance to stop while driving. Vehicle surges forward while stopped at traffic lights increasing the risk of a crash. Vehicle displays "passenger door ajar" warnings although door is shut. This results in alarm and lights flashing constantly resulting in several drained batteries so vehicle does not start. Transfer case or "power take off unit" failed at 125k miles resulting in non-drivable condition.

Hydraulic central unit failed, requiring replacement to prevent failure of the system and loss of braking ability of the car.
While driving our car, in good weather, (110,000 miles on the vehicle) flashed error message "check brake system" it lost all assisted brakes and we had to mash the brakes to the floor to brake adequately. Fortunately we weren't on a highway or in any traffic otherwise this would have absolutely caused an accident. Ford is saying it'll cost upwards of 5k to have the brakes fixed, it's an electronic module that they believe is defective, they aren't sure if this will fully fix the issue. I have found many other reports of the same issue with the Ford Escape Hybrids. This should be recalled and fixed by Ford as obviously any loss of brake function is unacceptable in my opinion.

The vehicle's hydraulic control unit has failed. As a result the vehicle is unsafe to drive because the abs does not function. The cost to replace this part is around $6000, which is more than the value of the car. I opened a complaint with Ford motor company but they say that there is nothing that they can do.
"takata recall" I was driivng on a city street when I was t-boned by a vehicle who ran a stop light. As I became contact with the other vehicle I lost control of my car and ended up hitting a water meter, after trying to slam on the brakes, because they brakes wouldnt catch on. . Neither contact with the other vehicle nor the water meter activated the air bags.

Failure of anti-lock braking system while driving on city street. Poor braking performance. Proposed repair is to replace hydraulic abs unit at a cost of $5400. Vehicle has only 104,000 miles and could be driveable if repaired. I see from the NHTSA website that other owners have had this exact problem.
"regen brakes diabled" notification comes on. After which, the braking seems inconsistent. This is a concern as the braking system is a safety issue.
I was driving at a normal speed, approximately 35 mph, on a city street. As traffic slowed I began to depress the brake pedal and suddenly I got several alerts on my instrument cluster (brake, abs, and regen disconnect). At the same time I lost all or most of my braking power. I was forced to use the park brake to stop the vehicle, and barely avoided a collision with another vehicle. This was a very frightening experience. After the vehicle sat for a short time, with the engine off, the system apparently reset itself and when I re-started the engine all functions were operational once again, and all the alerts were gone. However, this period was brief. Thinking this might be a system glitch, I cautiously drove the vehicle home. The next day this failure returned after about 20 miles of driving. At this time I realized that there is a serious flaw in the hybrid braking system of this model year Ford escape, and possibly other model years. I contacted a local Ford dealership and I was shocked when they informed me there are no recalls on this vehicle for this particular failure. As a mechanic I find this ridiculous. After a brief search online I found many hybrid Ford escape owner's that had the same problem as I did. At this point I deemed my vehicle unsafe to drive and decided the best thing to do was to report this failure to the NHTSA with the hopes that the Ford motor company will do something about this failure before somebody gets seriously injured or killed. My opinion is the problem is in the hydraulic control unit. (hcu). This is a complex electronic brake control unit that is specific to the Ford Escape Hybrid. For the record my vehicle had about 146,000 miles on it when this happened.
Breaks periodically just won't work. . . Go out. . . There are multiple complaints about this listed on the internet. Its says you can replace a 4000 part. . . However the car really isn't worth that much. Now it will say regen breaks disabled.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that when his girlfriend pressed on the brake it became inoperable and the brake and abs warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle stopped only after the brake was pumped multiple times. The vehicle was taken to dealer grieco Ford MA (1651 new state hwy, raynham, MA 02767. 1- 888-680-8818) who diagnosed the vehicle and stated abs pump was fractured, but it was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 111449. Jc.
A. B. S. Hcu. Part # 8m6z2c286a this repair according to the dealer cost is $5835. 56 their are many other complaints. This is a major safety problem !.
My abs brakes on my 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid engine light came on and the rpm ramped while I was going 65 mph down a highway and the front passenger brakes started smoking. I took it in to have it fixed and it was going to cost $5700 to fix because of some hcu unit that failed while I was driving at pretty good rate of speed. I am glad it didn't throw me off into a ditch or catch on fire with me in it. What a crappy design this is. Wow!!! scary stuff.
Vehicle lost all brakes was told it is a issue with a valve in the hybrid brake system which cost over 5 grand to fix through Ford.
Tl the contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving 30 mph, the "pull over safely now" warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The contact stated that the braking system failed to operate as intended. The crash occurred while the contact was en route to coccia Ford Lincoln inc (located at 577 e main st, wilkes-barre, PA 18702, (570) 823-8888) to have the vehicle repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 14v526000 (hybrid propulsion system). The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. A police report was filed and there were no injuries. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and issued case number: cas-14733790. The approximate failure mileage was 174,109.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving unknown speeds, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle came to a stop and the check abs indicator illuminated during the failure. The contact stated that the failure occurred twice. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened case number: 145268. The failure mileage was 103,300.
I have a 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid with 92518 miles on it. The break lights come on and then it has little breaks. It does this intermittently. I took it to the dealer and they said the hcu was bad and that it would need to be replaced and that it was going to cost me $6000 - $7000 to have it fixed. I put a used hcu on it and they said that one was also bad. I have owned many cars over the years and I have never had to put an hcu on before. I got on line and this seems to be a very common problem. So how come there is no recall since this has to do with the breaks. . If this was a Toyota this would have already been addressed. . I will never buy another Ford vechial again. . I work at a very big shop in town and anyone who askes what kind of car to buy I will tell them to buy a Toyota and not a Ford. Cause apparently Ford doesn't care about safety. P. S. How come I have to take it to the dealer to have the breaks bleed.
It's say regan brakes disabled system and now my brakes is burning before I pulled off the light came on.
Regenerative hybrid brakes disabled. . Vehicle brakes in "failsafe" mode, which requires you to slam the brakes all the way to the floor just to slow down. Ran through three red lights unwillingly. The Ford Escape Hybrid has many reported issues with the abs and regenerative system failing (a quoted $5000 fix). These vehicles are so rare, and probably every single one of them are no longer driven and instead on the forums with a laundry list of complaints around this issue.
The regen breaks disabled light is always on. The breaks do not work properly, if at all. Numerous times I have been unable to stop almost causing an accident. The breaks sometimes lock on and the vehicle won't move at all. Unable to go more than 40 mph. If you attempt, the vehicle shakes and the breaks smoke. I took it to Ford for diagnostic and they informed me it is a common problem due to the the beak system and the hybrid system being integrated. The part by itself is $4200 and the vehicle blue books for about $3000 at the most. The vehicle won't start or even turn over. The battery is good.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to engage. The contact stated that the regenerative braking system disabled warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist because the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
He hydraulic control unit failed on my vehicle. This seems to be an issue that has arisen with a great deal of owners of Ford Escape Hybrids over the last several years. I had to have the entire hcu system replaced at a Ford dealership service department. As it was not covered by warranty, nor considered by the company to be an issue deserving of a recall, I had to pay out of pocket for the entire thing, which totaled $4,863. 00 (and it took five days to get the work completed). I also had to pay to rent a car for the several days it took to get the part and perform the work, which was another $200. 00. Due to the high cost of this repair and the frequency with which it is affecting consumers, I believe that this issue should become a recall and people should be reimbursed for the repairs they have had to make.
Shock tower on back passenger side rusting out. Learned of this from dealership 2 weeks ago.
The computer checks the brakes upon start and the computer is falsely detecting an error with the hydraulic brake pump periodically. It can occur 1 in every 50 starts to sometime 5 attempts in every 1 good start. The computer if it sees an error will disable the regenerative brakes and the vehicle will brake significantly slower and less efficiently when in error mode. The computer glitch requires a total replacement and must be reprogrammed at the dealer at a cost of $4 to $5 thousand. Based on the thousands I see online with the same issue and nature of issue (brakes and safety), I am surprised to see a recall has not been mandated. The cost is beyond reasonable and I am left with driving an unsafe car.
Upon starting "service brakes soon" warning on dash along with "brake on " and "abs" warning light. Shut engine down and conducted safe restart. Brakes working at less than 50%. Wife can no longer drive vehicle.
While driving down the road, I hear an alarm for "service brake system", and lose all power to my brakes. Pedal is depressed to the floor with minimal ability to stop.
