37 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/26/2011

Two weeks ago, at 50,000 miles and just back from the dealer's service, my brakes failed at start-very little braking action and a warning on the dash. I drove it around the block and went through four stop signs. I had it towed back to the dealer, where it has been ever since. The technician there found a code for "over-extended brake pedal" -- naturally the result when the brakes fail and the pedal goes to the floor. The service manager says they cannot duplicate the failure despite frequent attempts, and that Ford will not authorize repair unless they can see the failure for themselves. The "customer service" manager at Ford headquarters, implies that Ford's engineers are unaware of this kind of problem and have no explanation for it -- a position that is belied by the many posts on Ford Escape Hybrid brake problem forums. The dealer's technician was more honest: he said "we can't replace the system without Ford's approval, and they won't approve that because of the high-dollar parts. " my reading of more than 150 posts on the web shows that 1) this problem has plagued the Escape Hybrid since 2005, 2) the problem often goes away immediately, only to recur unexpectedly later, and 3) Ford usually refuses to fix the problem, even when the car is, like mine, still under warranty.

39 Brakes Failed problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

The brakes fail on a regular basis while slowing down from speeds between 10 and 35 mph. It occurs as a sudden release of braking pressure while stepping on the brake pedal to slow down. At that time a momentary warning light comes on for several seconds and the system appears to go into a fail-safe mode that allows manual operation of the brakes. This causes a large increase in braking distance and I consider it very dangerous. This failure seems to be related to the hybrid braking system and may be common to other hybrid vehicles. After stopping the warning light goes away and the brakes will again function normally. The failure does not occur continuously but it does occur almost every day that it is driven. The car has been in a repair shop numerous times with many part replaced but the problem continues to evade our fleet mechanics. This is an inherent problem with this vehicle and commonly known where there are large fleets of hybrid vehicles. My CO-worker drives the same type of Escape Hybrid and he has the same failure. Please investigate with Ford and/or Toyota. A similar problem has been seen with Toyota prius in out fleet.

40 Brakes Failed problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

Multiple continued instances of complete brake failure. Since the initial occurrence, already documented on this site (odi id number : 10349431), it randomly recurred at least 10 times over the past 2 years, including 3 times in a single trip in June 2012 and two additional times in July 2012. The brake failures typically occurred during hot weather when running the air conditioner, but not always. Every time we thought we'd "figured out" a pattern to the failures, the brakes would go out at a different time than they ever had before -- at a higher speed, or while slowing for a stop light going uphill versus when we were trying to slow to a stop at the base of a steep hill with a marina in front of us. We finally sold the car fearing for the safety of our family, others on the roadways, and our finances. No wonder Ford quit making these vehicles. . .

42 Brakes Failed problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

Catastrophic brake failure causing property damage and damage to car. We have taken our vehicle to a Ford dealership twice in past year to find out why our brakes "catch" causing a momentary loss of braking. They told us both times that they couldn't find any problem and sent us out without an answer or fix. Then yesterday what we feared finally happened; during braking the brake pedal suddenly went to the floor and the brakes failed causing the vehicle to plow into a garage door. The car is back at the dealership now and even during drop-off they told us that this couldn't happen and that we were mistaken.

47 Brakes Failed problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/18/2008

Have had the "service brake system" message and the dash "brake" indicator light go on randomly without braking for a couple of months (began in may 2008) it has been to the dealer twice (in June 2008) and is now doing it again. The dealer replaced an electrical harness this first time and cleaned contacts according to a Ford service alert the second. I also had a similar problem in the fall of 2007. The "service brake system message" appeared and the dash "brake" indicator light came on over a three week period followed by the 4x4 system and abs system making noise, jerking the car several times and then shutting down while I was driving (November 2007). This was fixed by the dealer but now the car's indicator lights are turning on again and the problem does not seem to able to fixed. I am worried the brake system will fail again.
