Vehicle stalled while my wife and two small kids were driving on the freeway. The "stop safely now" statement popped up on the display. She managed to pull over to the shoulder and was able to restart the car after 10min. She was able to bring the vehicle home. At home vehicle could not be started at all still with the "stop safely now" warning on. Towed it to the Ford dealership and got the recommendation of a technician to replace the DC DC converter. I approved the replacement but vehicle still does not want to start. A sudden engine stall in the middle of the road is inacceptable with two small kids and a serious safety issue. I'd expect Ford to cover all repairs to fix this serious safety issue!.

I was driving on the interstate with my 2 year old and 4 year old in the car. I had been driving for about 45 min at interstate speeds, then slowed down to about 5-10 miles per hour due to traffic. All of a sudden, while slowly moving in traffic, a tone sounded, a red triangle appeared on the dash and the message center showed 'stop safely now'. The engine turned off, so the car stalled and stopped itself for me with no time to react. I was stuck in the middle lane of a 3 lane interstate and the car would not restart. It just kept the same message 'stop safely now', with the red triangle displayed. Eventually a road ranger assisted me to the side of the road by pushing my dead car while in neutral. I let the car sit and cool off over night and then was able to restart it in the morning with no issues at all. After reading online, the failure sounds identical to other Ford Escape Hybrid problems with the failure of the motor electronics coolant (mec) pump. There was a recall that covered my vehicle model production year model and location of production, NHTSA recall no. : 14v-526 manufacturer recall no. : 14s19. However, after inquiries with nhsta and Ford, both have told me that my VIN is not covered under the recall. There is no explanation that either entity will provide as to why my specific vehicle, with the same production date, location, and model as this recall, does not fall under this recall. I was never notified of any recalls when the recall was initiated either, if this had occurred less than a minute earlier, it would have caused a major accident and only by chance it occurred when traffic was moving slower, leaving time for other drivers to react to my stalled vehicle in the middle of the interstate.

The vehicle failed to start after the key was inserted into the ignition switch. The key has to be forced in and cranked over with considerable torque.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. When the key was placed in the ignition, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired by an independent mechanic; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 154,000.
The vehicle was parked and would not start. I received warnings on the dash and the information panel stating to slow to a stop and service the brakes. I was able to start the vehicle after disconnecting the battery and everything operated normally. After getting home and running diagnostics everything came back normal. Later that day the vehicle would not start again with the same warnings and it was more and more difficult to get the vehicle working again. I also noticed that the 12v battery seemed to be leaking so I inspected and cleaned it. The next day (Monday) I brought the vehicle to the Ford dealer and explained the problems including the leaking battery. The dealer replaced the 12 v battery under warranty and said my problems should be fixed but they would check for fault codes. The dealer found additional problems with the abs brake system but could not immediately diagnose the cause. The car was left for another day and eventually I was told that it was most likely the hydraulic control unit (hcu) with was approximately a $4500 part. I have read stories online that this is a fairly common problem with this model year Escape Hybrid and Ford is aware of the issue but not doing anything to correct it other than making the owners buy $4500 replacement parts.
