Took car in for oil change. Tech discovered both rear springs are broken. Was quoted $1200 to replace, including struts (still good). I am in minnesota and this car has no traction in the snow. I can drive at 10 mph and the back still breaks traction. I have spun out more driving this car than I have with any other vehicle. I do think Ford designed and sold an unsafe vehicle.

Failure of the rear springs on 1998 Ford Escort first in 2003 at 12,195miles and the replacements both failed again in 2009 at 36, 000 miles. Failure appears due to salt corrosion enhancement due to covered spring surface. Ford was contacted and even though there is a TSB on this issue they would offer no assistance. Failure rates are very short. Vehicle was never overloaded and is gently driven.
1997ford Escort wagon. Having had this car for eight years, where I needed to replace the rears spring once, I am now in the process of scheduling to replace the rear springs a second time to the amount of $700. 00. After some research I have found from mechanics and from the internet that this is a 'common problem" with Ford. Since this has happen a second time, for me I feel I should get some financial support from Ford for this obvious defect in the suspension. This suspension problem should be a recall from Ford.

Both rear springs broke. This is the second time in less then 6 months for the 2002. This seems to be a major design flaw in Ford Escort. I have a 1998 & 2002 and both have broken rear springs. Also every technician I have talked to knows the problem.

During safety inspection discovered that the rear springs of 1999 Ford Escort se had broken. This is the second Ford Escort I have owned that this has been a problem. First vehicle was a 1997 Ford Escort lx that I purchased from a dealer in ft. Collins, CO. I have owned that the rear springs failed and had to be replaced.
Broken rear springs.
: the contact stated while having routine tire maintenance done at a garage, the mechanic determined the rear spring was fractured. The contact did not have any problems with the vehicle. Updated 11/21/2006 - the consumer contacted the manufacture but they did not respond. The vehicle would not shift from park. The dealer replaced the shift lock system.
The contact stated the vehicle had a broken rear spring on the passenger's side. Dealer found it broken while doing a safety inspection. There was no indication that the spring was broken. Manufacturer said there was no recall. The contact has not had it fixed because of the expense. Contact believed it was a factory defect. Updated 11/29/2005 -.
Our 1999 Ford Escort with only 11,904 miles on the odometer (we drive a Subaru forester mostly), received its annual inspection (nys law) on August 11, 2005. The inspection revealed that both rear coil springs were broken. I asked the technician how that could happen with such low mileage and so little use and both he and the service manager (they are a highly regarded, after-market, auto repair business, servicing all makes of vehicles, and have no cause for bias) said that in their experience Ford Escorts are notorious for having weak and defective rear coil springs and that they had replaced many over the past few years (more than any other make or model). To a lesser degree they also noted that the taurus had the same problem. Before having the work done I had called the dealer (sam dell Ford of liverpool, NY) and the Ford consumer complaint office. Neither were at all helpful, denying all knowledge of a defect with the rear coil springs. I am attaching a memo from the independent repair shop, documenting their experience with the Escort.
1999 Ford Escort. The consumer stated the rear springs were defective. When the vehicle was taken in for inspection the rear springs were broken. When the consumer called Ford, they did not know of this problem. The vehicle was then taken to an after market repair shop. They stated this was seen all of the time. The Escorts were notorious for bad rear springs. This vehicle has 11,904 miles on it. The rear springs were replaced.
Took vehicle in for service, and technician found that both rear springs were broken. I was unaware of this damage, though I had noticed some suspension noise when turning. Also, the handling of the vehicle was much "looser" in the rear. Technician informed me that the springs could further deteriote and the body of the vechicle could collapse onto the chassis. The estimate for repairs was $750. 00, though no repairs have been made to date.
Vehicle being serviced and technician noticed that both rear springs were broken in the same location. No indication from drive of vehicle that there was a problem but was told by technician that spring could come into contact with tire thus causing a blow-out.
A problem with springs. A broken rear spring; they fixed it, and installed new springs. Consumer later found out from other people that they were having the same problem. Received a recall on the front springs; but he was having a rear spring problem.
Vehicle broke rear springs 2 years ago.
Both rear coil springs are broken. The vehicle has seen mostly highway miles and is well kept. There was little to no symptoms of the problem ,and was found during an inspection of the rear brakes. It was explained that this could have caused the wheel to separate had it not been found.
While getting an oil change, the mechanic informed the consumer that both rear springs broke. The dealer was not notified. This is the consumer's third Ford Escort with broke rear springs (1991, 1993 and 1997).
Rear suspension spring failure.
After taking the vehicle to dealer for a safety inspection it was discovered that rear springs were broken. The vehicle was not involved in any accident.
While the state inspection station was inspecting the vehicle inspector informed consumer that both rear springs broke. Dealer was notified, and they informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under a recall.
Replacement of rear springs on 1997 Ford Escort. The consumer wanted an explanation as to why her 2000 Ford taurus was recalled but not her 1997 for Escort.
Brought my car to shop to have struts replaced. Was informed that the rear coil springs had broken and had destroyed the struts as well. Vehicle has 80,00 highway miles on it. I was also informed that this is a common occurrence with this vehicle, and the mechanic has one every week into his shop.
Both rear springs broke on a 1999 Ford Escort wagon with 102000 miles providing very dangerous handling situation. This is a very well known problem with this car and is due to poor design.
Defective vehicle back springs. Both back springs were broken and I paid to have them replaced. Ford knew they were defective since they had re-designed the springs. The new springs were put on and now the whole vehicle bounces on the road. Handling is bad and if I have to travel on a bumpy road I have to take a draminine. I have paid to have installed 6 new springs and 8 struts but I still get seasick driving my car. It is so bumpy my neck hurts riding in my car.
Both rear coil springs broke at same time. Car had only 37,000 miles and was 4 years old. Independent technician fixed at least 8 other Ford Escorts with the same problem.
1997 Ford Escort had both rear springs broken at the same place. Had them replaced by mechanic who told me they should have never broken. I want Ford to be accountable for this and reimburse me for the repair. If 1 spring was broken then I could see it being possible, but both at the same place???? they were manufactured poorly.
Car meticulously maintained yet both rear springs had to be replaced at 60,000 miles (close to $300 repair) due to their both being fractured on the bottom-most loop.
1999 Ford Escort wagon 77,000 mile purchased new rear suspension springs described as cracked by local service station at time of safety inspection - vehicle was failed as unsafe requiring repair and replacement found TSB 14993 on this site noting suspension spring failure potential if this can fail a vehicle as unsafe its time for a recall!.
While having my oil changed, the technician noted that the right rear suspension spring was broken near the bottom. The broken spring did not perceivably alter the function of the car nor did it make noise. It was clarified to me that the spring needed to be replaced and based on the number of complaints on this site I feel it is necessary to have both spring replaced. The estimate for this repair is estimated at about $400.
Rear (both) springs on 1998 Ford Escort broke prior to 55,000 miles. Car was not used for any heavy duty driving.
The rear suspension in my car is all out of whack. I have been told that I need to replace the rear springs. My mechanic says that he has seen a lot of problems like with rear suspension in these cars. I drive an Escort wagon. I don't go off roading so I don't understand why the rear springs are broken. Seems like this could be an issue of a faulty part or suspension system. When I have people in the back seat of my car the handling is awful and I have to go really slow over any sort of bump because the car will bottom out! just thought others may be experiencing this problem.
It was found during an inspection that the rear suspension springs were broken.
During a safety inspection for my 1998 Ford Escort, I was advised that both rear springs were broke, which caused both rear struts to weaken. I was also told that this has been a common occurrence on this type vehicle.
