37 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 1997 Ford Escort

Failure Date: 03/05/2003

Brought my car in for the wiring recall and I told the dealer that there was spark knocking in the engine when it first starts and under hard acceleration. When I drive into my parents drive way my parents tell me that they know I am there because of the radio interference on the tv screen. I know a lot about electricity and I know that this is caused by noise and or shorts, bad connections what have you. I am very concerned about this because I know that the car has resistor plugs. We have also replaced the computer once and now this recall thing! we also had to replace the rear springs. When its really cold out and go to start the car the starter does not disengage and grinds on the fly wheel. It takes forever for it to warm up and it does not rarely ever warm up when its idling you have to drive it to get any heat. But overall its only left my wife stranded once. That's better than our last vehicle!! but now I wonder if this car is a ticking time bomb waiting to happen. Ford may not be my next choice of vehicle in the future that is if it doesn't kill me first!.

43 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 1999 Ford Escort

Failure Date: 03/28/2002

I drive carefully and I maintain my car well. My Ford Escort wagon is a 1999 model. As such, I still consider it quite new. With only 44,000 miles on it, I considered it to have low mileage. Last week my car failed its annual auto inspection. The mechanic (hamilton's garage of portland, me) told me that both rear coil spring assemblies on my car were broken. He said that this has become a potentially dangerous common problem on late model Ford Escorts. He said that this problem is very rare on other cars. He told me to go to the local Ford dealership to see if Ford has initiated a recall of the Escort's defective rear coil spring assemblies. The Ford dealer (rowe Ford of westbrook, me) informed me that they were unaware of a recall for that specific part. The Ford dealer told me that I would have to pay to replace the defective broken rear coil springs myself as the original warranty on my vehicle had expired. The repair job on my car at the Ford dealership cost me $400. My wife contacted the Ford motor company headquarters and reported the defect problem with both broken rear coil spring assemblies on our car. The Ford headquarters also stated that there was no recall of late model Ford Escort defective rear coil spring assemblies. They "claimed" to be unaware of such a defect problem with the late model Ford Escorts. I do not believe Ford. I remember Ford's lies concerning the scandal with the Ford pinto's explosive gas tank. This defect problem with the Ford Escort's rear coil spring assemblies can potentially be very dangerous. I wonder how many people will have to get killed due to this dangerous defect before Ford will admit that a problem exists. I strongly believe that Ford should have paid the $400 repair bill required to replace their defective broken rear coil springs on my car. The fact that they refused illustrates the poor moral character of the Ford motor company.

44 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 1996 Ford Escort

Failure Date: 03/15/2002

I never hauled anything heavy in the back of my station wagon. The rear coil springs were hollow not solid and failed because they rusted through as a result of water collecting in the bottom of the support which holds the base of the spring in the correct position. My mechanic said that many times when you hit a bump the broken spring will twist and puncture the sidewall of the tire that it is adjacent to the spring. He also said that the same spring failure occurs with all the Ford Escort station wagons. Ford should be required to issue a recall on all these station wagons and repair the problem. Nlm.

46 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 1997 Ford Escort

Failure Date: 08/10/2001

I took my car into my dealership for routine state inspection and was informed that both rear suspension coil springs were broken and would need to be replaced. I was very shocked since car has never been used to haul anything more than groceries. I was told by the mechanic this is a common problem and they check for it. I reported this to Ford motors and was for the most part told "sorry but not our problem". It appears from the various dealers and Ford motors that this is a known problem that they plan to do nothing about unless forced to by people being killed or injured. If they cannot own up to poor workmanship, then I will be buying my vehicles elsewhere.

Having taken car into dealership for routine state inspection have been informed that the left rear coil spring is broken and would need to be replaced for inspection. Very shocked since car has never been used to haul anything more than groceries and is driven very safely due to lack of horse power. Called other dealerships to see if this problem is common with Ford Escort and to my surprise have been told that it is not uncommon. Reported to Ford motors at detroit and was told to get it fixed and keep receipts just incase there maybe a recall.
