1 Tire problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2022

Michelin defender ltx m/s size 265/75r16. 4 new tires installed less than 60 days and 1,800 miles by costco before incident. Tire air pressure checked prior to a trip. On the trip, 1 tire rapidly deflated without warning on the freeway in arizona. Barely had enough time to pull off the freeway and onto the shoulder. The tire showed no punctures, or tread separation, but the tire sidewalls were wrinkled and distorted. Took tire to costco for warranty and the tire shop could not find any internal punctures and were unable to determine as to why the tire went flat. They said they have never seen a tire fail like this.

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Excursion equipped with firestone tires, tire line: steel tex radial a/t, tire size: lt 265/75r16. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph on a dirt road, the rear driver's side tire exploded. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and discovered that the tread was separated from the tire. The tire was not replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. 3 Tire problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2010

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Excursion. The vehicle has cooper dominator sport a/t tires, line size lt265/75/r16, dot number upw8xdj3007. The contact stated when driving at speeds of 25 mph and over, the steering wheel would become extremely wobbly. The failure persisted and became progressively worse over time. The tires were taken to a tire specialist and the mechanic advised the tires exhibited excessive tread separation. One of the front tires exhibited visible tread separation and was replaced at the manufacturer's expense. The remaining three tires would be replaced at the contact's expense. The contact was able to locate a recall for his brand and line of tires however, the recall did not cover his specific tire size (NHTSA campaign id number: 06t016000: tires: tread/belt). The remaining four tires were not yet replaced. The tires were purchased in 2008 and the tire failure mileage was 27,000. The current and failure mileage of the vehicle was 136,000.

7 Tire problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2005

Traveling north in light rain on ih 55 at brookhaven, ms on Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2005. I experienced a sudden failure of a firestone steeltex r4s radial tire. Luckily it was on the rear of my 2000 Ford Excursion, and I was able to get to the shoulder quickly and safely. The tire tread had separated from the ply for about a third of the way around the tire on the inside. The tire has 34,000 miles on it. This sudden failure in a similar mode as the other firestone failures leads me to believe perhaps they should be recalled also. This tire is an original tire that was installed at the factory, and is a load range d tire. My Excursion is a diesel model.

8 Tire problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2004

I purchased 4 big o big foot at tires in August 2003. In the four months between July 2004 and November 2004, I experienced 3 separate high-speed catastrophic blow-outs on 3 of the tires. In each case, I was traveling at highway speed (65 mph) with my family in the vehicle. The first was on a warm summer day, the second was on a moderate day, the third was at about 35 degrees. The first two blow-outs occurred on the front passenger side. The third was on the rear driver's side. After the replacement of each of the first two tires, the remaining three wheels were rotated. In each case, it was a struggle to maintain control of the vehicle, but in the third case (rear tire), the car skidded dangerously out of control as the rear end swayed back and forth. Had I not steered into the skid, I am certain the vehicle would have rolled over. The big o dealership replaced the tires each time, but insisted that the failures could only have been caused by encountering some road hazard which caused the tires to DE-pressurize quickly, heat up and then blow. However, three high-speed blowouts in four months indicates not an isolated circumstance or coincidence, but a dangerous and potentially deadly pattern.

16 Tire problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2004

Replacement of firestone tires initiated by recall of 2/26/04. I replaced these tires in 2001 at 17,200 miles because of safety concerns. At that time there were many complaints to NHTSA and shortly thereafter an investigation was open. Ford now uses e rated tires on the Excursion which run at higher tire pressure. Once again Ford did not outfit the vehicle with a proper tire for the weight of the vehicle, rather opting for a smoother ride of a d rated tire. They were doing this because the front springs were also inadequate for a good ride. The used e rated tires on the f250 and f 350 from which the Excursion is based.

17 Tire problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2004

Replacement of firestone tires initiated by recall of 2/26/04. Having replaced these tires in 2001 at 21,622 miles because of safety concerns, I am now ineligible for reimbursement because of having done so. Rather, it seems, I should have waited until the tires had malfunctioned and then, if I had survived, filed for reimbursement. Such perverse logic by firestone should be overturned and I call on the NHTSA to have firestone reverse its position.

18 Tire problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2003

The consumer took the vehicle to a firestone dealer, who refused to replace the tires with load range e tires. Firestone refused to honor the recall.
