47 problems related to electrical system have been reported for the 1998 Ford Expedition. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Parking on the street in is gone.
Takata recall my truck has a burning spell and was some smoke it was park I was about to pull off on my street where I live.
The spark plug blew out for the second time in2 months. It sounded like the motor was knocking . Ford only put 3 threads in the cylinder head to hold the spark plug but the spark plugs have 10 threads. I called Ford and they acted like they never heard of this before. There are forums going back to 2002 that I was reading yesterday about this issue so clearly they were lying. Owners report engine fires when the plug blows out. My vehicle didn't catch fire . They refuse to fix this defect and deny its their fault.
Takata recall: the spark plugs have blown out of the engine block. They have been repaired 3 times. Each time, it smells of an electrical line is burning, the instrument cluster goes erratic and they zeros out and doesn't move. This has happened while driving on city and highways.
(takata recall) I have purchased my truck from a legal car dealership in reno nv had 135000 miles wen bought ive had to replace fuel pump had to buy different rims/tires due to wear of stock rims . . Exhaust problems replaced fuel injector. . Wear of thing causing water damage when raining outside. Spark plug ejected from engine was in motion 45 mph stationary moving problems also n wen turning.
The vehicle rolls when in park. It makes a loud grinding sound while it is rolling unlike a parking pawl makes. I have not gotten any recall notices on this issue.
When it rains everything inside goes dead and it will not crank. Can be going down the road and it shuts off on you . This will continue for a few days until everything dries out or its not damp outside anymore. I have looked this up on computer and it looks like it is coming back to the fuse panel getting wet because of poor drainage coming from windshield , some people are saying that it has caused fires. Ihave only owned this vehicle for 11/2 years and don't know if there has been any recalls or anything fixed on it. Please let me know . Thanks. Michelle russell.
Vehicle draining power after ignition shut to off. Power is on to vehicle due to water damage from vehicles exterior defect draining water direct to the fuse panel. What is it going to take before this dangerous condition is addressed by our NHTSA, deaths? I have found this to be a problem in almost every one if not every one of these vehicles, it is only a matter of when these problems start. Do your research and you will find countless complaints, what are you waiting for? will this be another stop sign installed after someone is killed. Is that what we are waiting on? please step up and protect the people that now own these vehicles before someone really gets hurt.
We have our Expedition for a while and we know the people who owned it before us. While it is raining and days after the power to the truck does not turn off. The radio will turn on, the blower for heat or air will keep blowing, the lights will turn on, the four wheell drive will stop, abs will stop, and the wiper blades will not work. So because the electrical items will turn on at random, they drain the battery and the truck will not start the next day. We found out that due to manufacturing error, the windshield leaks water into the general electric module. The other problem is the part not only expensive, but if you buy one and it does not work, it is not returnable. And that was told to us by multiple dealerships. So basically Ford knows of the problem and it is a safety issue and has done nothing about it.
My 1998 Ford Expedition had a recall and they wanted to keep my car for three day minimum of three days. I have to work so I waited until I had a long weekend. I waited to long I guess because I came out of the bank and my car was on fire. I called auto fair Ford in manchester,nh and they said because I did not bring it in immediately that they would replace the part that started the fire but I was responsible for everything else destroyed by the recalled part. I will never buy or deal with Ford or Ford vehicles again!.
Our 1998 Expedition only has 93,000 miles and it is posing electrical problems, the mechanic has told us it needs a new gem module. I have read at least 50 complaints about Fords windshield leaking and causing same symptoms. Why would Ford do a recall. Or maybe they have. Can you tell me if they have. This could cause a fire which could cause a sever accident. All the complaints are very similar so it is a manufactured defect.
The contact owns a 1998 Ford Expedition. The contact noticed a large amount of smoke while the vehicle was parked in a carport. Suddenly, the vehicle erupted uncontrollably in flames and exploded. The fire department was called to the scene and a fire report was filed. There were no warnings prior to the failure. The two pet dogs that were outside when the massive fire erupted sustained severe burns. There were no personal injuries. The property damage consisted of the carport and portions of the house, such as the roof, siding, and a couple of rooms inside. The vehicle was completely destroyed and currently remains at the scene for investigation purposes. The contact is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. The insurance company was notified, but the cause of the failure has not yet been determined. The failure and current mileages were 181,000. Updated 05/08/09 updated 05/12/09. Updated 06/09/09.
My SUV caught fire parked in a parking lot and not running at the time.
My 1998 Ford Expedition XLT caught fire when parked in the parking lot of georgio's restaurant after driving for about 20 minutes. Fire started in the engine compartment and remained localized there. Entire engine compartment flamed up, burned a hole through the hood, and damaged everything forward of the vehicles firewall. Flame was contained and extinguished using industrial fire extinguishers available at the restaurant georgio's where my wife, daughter, and I were meeting my parents for dinner. The vehicle has a good service record and has been service at the local Ford dealer a few times, so this was a huge surprise. I am fairly confident the vehicle will be declared "totaled" by my insurance carrier geico. My wife and I depend on having a second vehicle because I drive our other vehicle 60 minutes away every day for work. Since she spends her time raising our daughter, I am the sole source of income, but we're unsure that income can accommodate a car payment (both of our vehicles are paid for).
Cc quit working, replaced at dealer, would not get out of park.
On April 25th, 2005 my 1998 Ford Expedition exploded and was totally destroyed by fire. I contacted Ford and was told my VIN number was not a part of the recall. From all information I have been able to fine the description of other car fires match how my car burned. Ford has advised me that my insurance company will have to subrogate. My insurance company will cover the balance owed on my car, however I am without a vehicle. My insurance company is advising me that a law suit against Ford will take years. I want to file a complaint against Ford, this is unfair treatment. I have lost my car, contents within and now I have no transportation.
Spark plugs blown out of cylinder head of Ford Expedition 5. 4 liter engine.
I arrived at home and parked vehicle in garage ~5:15pm. My wife walked on the treadmill (which is in the garage) from 7:15 ? 7:45pm and did not smell or notice anything unusual. At 10:00 pm I looked through garage door to make sure lights were out and garage doors shut. I noticed a small red light below the truck. After further investigation, I found it was a flame. I came back in the house told my wife to notify the fire dept. I used a hose and fire extinguishers to exhaust flame as the fire dept. Arrived. The heat was so intense it melted the garage light lens above the vehicle. The vehicle would not go into neutral due to damage, so I used my neighbor?s truck to pull the vehicle out of the garage. It appears to have been the defective cruise switch according to a fire investigator. The damage to the vehicle is obvious I can email photos (except I did not photo damaged windshield). We also have smoke damage to our garage. I have filed a complaint with Ford originally they told me it would be 5 days until they contact me, now they say it could be 10 days. I asked them to expedite, since I am currently without a vehicle. Ford has not done anything at this point to review or resolve the issue.
Our 1998 Ford Expedition was destroyed by a electrical fire that damaged our home. The truck was last driven at 9:30pm and at 11:30pm it started on fire. The truck was totaled by the insurannc company.
Vehicle inadvertently caught on fire while being parked. The cause of this was undetermined.
Spark plug blew-out.
My 1998 Ford Expedition blew a spark plug out of the head. I now learn that Ford's engineers recognized this defect in the head and have increased the thread count in the head from approximately 4 threads to approximately 10 threads (per power Ford, torrance, CA).
Vehicle parked approx 3 hours, flames front of dash at windshield, tried to put out vehicle fire himself --- injured ---- no problems with vehicle prior to vehicle fire.
While pulling into the street from a parked position a spark plug blew out. Dealer was not notified.
While my 1998 Ford Expedition was parked in drive way, it caught on fire under the hood without any type of warning. The fire was put out by my husband and our neighbors, only to reign night again. The fire department was called to the scene and was able to put it out for good.
On my 1998 Ford Expedition the spark plug blew out of the engine. The Ford company will not say that the engine has a defect. The spark plugs are still the same ones that came with the truck new. I had my infant son in the car when this occurred, and this mishap put us in needless peril. Car is in repair still and Ford is not treating this like an engine defect. I see many online posts from other Ford owners who experienced this same problem. This situation could have caused death or serious injury. Gasoline was fumes were strong and the engine could have caught on fire.
Ford needs to recall the 1998 year Expedition. I bought my vehicle new and have to date replaced a blown spark plug and approximately 5 blown coil packs. Ford tells me the installation of the coil packs were not moisture protected therefore when the coil receives moisture they blow. There is 8 coil packs in a vehicle at a cost of approximately $377 per coil. How can we get these recalled? if you did a search of all Ford dealerships and see how many people have had coil packs and sparks plugs replaced you would see there is a definite problem. Please help with this!.
While driving 30 mph, a loud knocking noise was heard coming from the front, then vehicle stalled. Consumer tried to restart vehicle but was unable to do so. Consumer had vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the third spark plug blew out, and needed to be replaced. Driver informed the mechanic that this problem occurred more than once.
While driving on a service road at 40 mph spark plugs blew out, causing vehicle to decelerate. This was a common problem with these vehicles, that may have been caused by the tread not being treaded deep enough into the head at the factory.
My 1998 Ford Expedition eddie bauer with a 5. 4l triton v-8 just blew a spark plug.
Number 2 spark plug blew out of the head, damaging the coil and stranding my wife, 2 year old son and my 8 month old daughter.
Spark plug bown out of poorly designed cylinder head on 5. 4 liter engine.
The contact owns a 1998 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that her vehicle caught fire in her driveway. The fire department extinguished the fire and a report was filed. The insurance company was unable to determine the cause of the failure; however, they would not replace the vehicle because the insurance coverage was cancelled. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer wanted possession of the vehicle in order to perform an inspection; however, it was no longer available because the insurance company disposed of the vehicle. The manufacturer would not assist with any reimbursement and stated that they were not liable for the repairs. They further stated that the customer's claim will be closed. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Traveling on the freeway in stop and go traffic at approximately 40-50 mph when one of the spark plugs in the motor exploded out of the head. I spoke to Ford, and they expressed that this is a common problem with the Ford Expedition, that it is probably a casting flaw with the heads, and that a replacement is typical and will cost approximately $3,000. 00 for repair. Aside from being stranded on the side of the road, there was no indicator that this would happen. Research has led me to find that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of other Ford owners that have experienced this same problem. Where is the recall?.
I have a 1998 Ford Expedition 5. 4l engine. At under 50000 miles a spark plug blew right out of the cylinder. Head and stripped the threads. Repairs included a new cylinder head. Ford recommends spark plug change at about 100000 miles. The issue is a defective design of the aluminum cylinder head only having a few turns of thread to hold in a spark plug under compression.
