The approximate failure mileage was 129,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed the failure at the spark plug thread. The local mechanic reinforced the thread at location number eight but the failure continuously recurred in other locations. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 143,000 and the current mileage was 150,000.
I parked my 2001 Ford Expedition XLT SUV in my parking stall on the afternoon of November 2, 2009 at approximately 1600hrs. The vehicle was parked until time of the fire which occurred between 1600hrs and 2325hrs. The entire engine compartment burned the fire was so intense that the hood of the car completely melted away. The fire burned and melted through every part of the inside of the vehicle. The front windshield busted out as well as 4 passenger windows. I have pictures and video of the aftermath of this fire. No one was injured and no other vehicle or property was damaged. Nothing unusual was noticed up to the day the vehicle fire.
The engine ejected the #3 spark plug, tearing up the threads in the process. The repair involved installation of a helicoil, although the dealer (packey-webb of downers grove IL) insisted that the only available repair would be installing a new head assembly. The head assembly, including labor, would have been over 4 times the cost of the helicoil. This must have been due to either weak threads, or improperly torqued spark plugs from the factory.
Spark plug ejection from engine. Started the vehicle and the #3 spark plug blew out of head which broke the ignition coil pack above it. Mechanic (not dealer) installed an aftermarket kit made for the Ford motor. 2001 Expedition 5. 4l triton 113,000 miles.
While driving up a mountain vehicle stalled. When this occurred the vehicle lost power steering. Consumer was able to maintain control of vehicle and restarted it. Dealership serviced vehicle several times for this issue, but was unable to remedy the failure because they could not duplicate it.
Since approximately March of 2002 I have experienced four seperate incidents where my truck suddenly accelerated. Each time I was moving slowly using the engine idle speed to propel the truck forward when the truck suddenly accelerated. Twice I was pulling into my garage, once pulling into a instant oil change station once pulling into a car wash. Each time I was able to stop the truck before striking anything using the brakes. Pulling into the oil change station I was very startled as the mechanic was guiding me into the stall and if I had not reacted as quickly as I did I'm certain would have been injured. I contacted the dealer by telephone and they stated that no one had reported any similar incidents. I also had the truck examined by another Ford dealer and they could not locate any "codes" nor could they duplicate the problem. I have owned more than 25 vehicles during my lifetime and this is a first for me. This is also my second Ford Expedition, nothing like this has ever happened with that truck either. I hope to resolve this problem before someone gets injured by my vehicle or another Expedition. Thank you for your interest, michael t. Adamczak. Dt.
