A week ago I was driving my 2001 Ford Expedition to friends for a social visit. On the way, I drove as I normally do the speed limit as posted. At around 10:00 pm, in the middle of nowhere, I encountered the now well known and dreaded spark plug ejection. Thought I had been shot at there for a second, but soon realized what it was. It couldn't have happened at a worse time nor to a worse spark plug to reach, far left rear. I was only 75 miles from home stranded by my vehicle. I truly am a loyal Ford fan and owner of several, but this is by far the worst vehicle I have ever owned! I am thoroughly disgusted with this piece of you know what! after getting it towed home, I attempted a replacement of the plug only to find the plug hole was screwed up and couldn't get it in there straight. So what the heck do I do now? Ford motor company, this is a crock and you know it! whatya gonna do now? blow it off and do nothing, as I expect. Or are you going to repair it as you well should. These vehicles aren't cheap, but I am beginning to think they area built that way intentionally. What are you going to do Ford?.
Spark plug ejected from the engine of my 2001 Ford Expedition. The engine is a triton 5. 4l v8.
The spark plug (passenger side, second back from front of engine) ejected from the engine head while parked. We had driven for 20 minutes, stopped at a restaurant, turned off the engine, but restarted it within about 60 seconds. The spark plug ejected immediately after the engine was restarted, within 1 second. There were no injuries, and the vehicle was not in motion at the time. My entire family was in the vehicle at the time. The sound of the ejection was sufficiently loud that it resembled a gunshot, to which an off-duty officer reacted. The coil pack was damaged beyond use, the spark plug insulator shattered. The plugs appeared to be original motorcraft plugs, although at 130k miles, they would be very old. They had sufficient carbon and wear that they could be original plugs or plugs from the first scheduled replacement (if it was done). Repairs have not yet been performed.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Expedition. While driving 15 mph, there was a loud, unusual pop heard from the hood area. The contact moved off the roadway and discovered that the spark plugs had fractured from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the contacts place of residence. The dealer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 114,000.

The fire department was called to extinguish the fire. A fire report was available. There were no prior warnings indicating the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed for the cause of the failure. The current and failure mileage was 95,000.
I was driving my family home from yellowstone on i25, when our 2001 Ford Expedition blew a spark plug. We were miles from anywhere with a tow truck, and it took over 2 hours before a tow truck operator got us. At the same time, an escaped murderer was hitchhiking down a different route home. (what if we had chosen that route?) I rented a car to drive home, and it looks like we were way overcharged for the repair. ($3500).
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Expedition. While parked he noticed flames came from the cowling ( where the windshield wiper arms are located) of the vehicle. The fire department extinguished the flames. A report was available. . The vehicle was towed to a township center for repairs. The Ford the insurance company will contact the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 162,000.
Blown #1 spark plug that has occurred 3 times in a year helicoil will not hold.
2001 Ford Expedition 5. 4l v8 enginge spark plug blew out of head.
Spark plug was blown out of engine when vehicle was started, breaking the coil which sits on top of spark plug. Found info on internet that this is a common problem with Ford triton engines due to failure of aluminum threads in engine intake; problem presents a fire hazard should fuel be injected into cylinder and ignited when spark plug is blown out.
2001 Ford Expedition 4. 6l triton v8 spark plug blew out.
Ford Expedition eddie bauer 2001 the spark plug burst out of the engine head; causing sparks inside the front area causing difficult to drive the car on the highway. There was a slight fire - luckily no injury.
I have a 2001 Ford Expedition that blew out the #3 spark plug six months ago. The repair cost at the Ford dealership cost $450. 00 with no warranty. This morning I was driving to work and hears the loud pop and knew that a spark plug had again been ejected. I was seven miles from home so I thought I would drive it home. I drove about 20 mph on the side of the road and the gas fumes were so strong that I had to open my window. All it would have taken it a small spark in the engine compartment for my truck to have been on fire. Please investigate this before someone is seriously injured.
A spark plug blew out of the passenger side head (position #3) on my SUV. The truck was traveling at about 45mph at the time under normal (light) driving conditions. My mechanic is working up an estimate, but believes it will cost several thousand dollars to repair. I followed up by researching this online, and was surprised to find many other similar complaints on comparable Ford vehicles. At what point is a recall triggered? I have a 2001 Ford Expedition with a 5. 4l v8. The truck has about 80k miles on the odometer.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that five spark plugs have blown out of the engine. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the failure was the result of the aluminum tips from the spark plugs entering the cast iron heads of the engine. The dealer also stated that the failure was common and they were the only location with the tools to perform repairs. The failure mileage was 130,000 and the current mileage was 165,000. The VIN was unavailable.
2001 Ford Expedition: spark plug blowout. This is obviously a manufacturers defect as it has occurred on thousands of Ford vehicles. There should be a mandatory recall!.
One of my spark plugs in my 2001 Ford Expedition suddenly shot out of the engine block while driving spraying fuel all over the engine compartment. The repairman at the dealer stated "this is just something that happen to aluminum block engines, and it could happen again to the one we repaired or any of the others we didn't repair. ".
The spark plug on the 8th cylinder blew up and cause a short on the electrical system.
Spark plug blow out on Ford Expedition.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Expedition. The contact heard a loud bang when he started the vehicle. He drove to the repair shop and the mechanic stated that the spark plugs blew out of the engine block and destroyed the coil. The current and failure mileages were 95,000.
The spark plug exploded from the cylinder head due to a mechanical defect in my cylinder head, and my Expedition is the only vehicle I own which legally fits all of my children in their booster seats. The Ford motor company won't fix the problem unless I pay them $750, which I don't have, and don't believe I should have to pay to fix their defect.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Expedition. The current and failure mileage were 71000. While driving 2 mph the spark plugs spits and it affected the cylinder head, which affected the engine, causing the vehicle not to run. The contact spoke with her insurance company ,and they stated that there was a class action against Ford for this problem. The consumer states that to repair the vehicle, it would be $4,000 and the two extended warranties will not cover the cost. Update 05/22/tr.
My 2001 Ford Expedition blow a spark plug out of the engine head. Research indicates this is a very common problem with Ford aluminum head engines. Ford will not provide the consumer with a program to help with the cost to repair this obvious design defect. They have a redesigned head that will replace the defective head for $3,500. Ford takes no responsibility for the financial hardship this engineering defect has caused thousands of Ford owners.

I had a misfire on #7 spark plug on my 2001 Ford Expedition. It was repaired on Friday at a shop. Saturday afternoon @ 12:30 # 2 spark plug was blown out of the engine completely now it has a blown motor. I have owned this SUV for 4 months. I have the old spark plug and coil pack from #7 and I only have the coil pack for #2 the rest of it is missing. From all I have read on line im not alone.
: the contact stated the vehicle accelerates on its own. This occurs approximately two times a week. The dealer determined it is a faulty mass airflow censor. The contact expressed it has not been repaired due to a warranty dispute. The defect only began a few months ago.
No events prior to failure. Blow out of #3 spark plug from cylinder head. Ford estimates $3,600. 00 to repair. No repair done. Deciding what to do.
I was driving the vehicle to the dealer when the check eng light started rapidly flashing. ,pulled over opened the hood and burst into flames , now I am out the down payment and the remaining amount that the ins did not pay . I am not able to purchase another vehicle putting me into a bind.
Driving about 40 miles per hour in my 2001 Ford Expedition w/ triton v8 5. 4l when I heard a loud pop. Vehicle was very loud afterwards but still driveable. Had to stay under 15 mph to turn around and drive it the one mile I had already driven to return home. Greater than 15 mph produced sounds similiar to the sound of an extremely loud lawnmower. Problem: blew a spark plug. Don't know which one yet but from what I am reading on the internet, the repair will be sure to drain my wallet. Am having it towed to the dealer tonight to find out the damage to my engine and my purse.
My wife was driving our 2001 Expedition home from work which is about 35 miles away when the #2 spark plug "blew" out of the cylinder head of the engine causing it to misfire badly. She had to pull off the side of the road in someones yard. Luckily the person there let her use a phone to call me. I called into work, went and picked her up and we went to the nearest Ford dealership in springfield, TN. We had to SUV towed to the dealership, they inspected it and found the spark plug had "blown" out of the cylinder head. Ford would not cover any part of the cost because my vehicle had 49k miles on it and I had changed the spark plugs about 15k miles ago because the #1 cylinder factory spark plug "fowled up". Anyway it cost me five days without a vehicle and $2953 to replace the head. I am an engineer and feel that this is a design issue with the vehicle. There have been to many other cases just like mine for it to be an "isolated" incident. This may seem like just a property damage issue but if stranded in the middle of nowhere or even on a busy street or interstate it has the potential to be life threating. Thank you for your time. Sw.
The vehicle was parked inside of the garage without warning the vehicle caught fire. The fire department was called out to extinguished the fire. Two people sustained injuries and went to the emergency room on its own. The vehicle was towed and totaled out by the insurance company. Please provide additional information.
5. 4 engine spark plug blow out.
Several times, usually at stop lights, while idling with foot on the brake, the engine surges up to approx 1000 rpm for approx 3-5 sec. If foot was not on the brake, the truck could have accelerated into the car in front of me, or into the intersection. Every time I'm at the Ford dealership I have them investigate, but nothing is found on the computer code search, and the symptom is very irregular and rare, so it has not reproduced while at the dealer. I've seen this reported before on mycarstats. Com.
While traveling on the highway vehicle will shut down without prior warning, and then a few seconds later will restart. Dealership is aware of the problem.
While at a stop with the brakes applied, the engine revved. The consumer felt the force of the truck as if it wanted to pull off. The consumer pressed harder on the brake and placed the gear in neutral and at that timed the revving of the engine stopped.
