1 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2026

While driving on interstate at highway speeds (70mph), the transmission experienced sudden downshift, which increased the engine rpms to redline and rapidly decelerated the vehicle. Occupant safety was put at risk while other drivers were forced to quickly avoid collision due to our much slower speed. Transmission would not select proper gear which made it difficult to proceed to a safe pull-off point. After restarting the vehicle, the situation repeated itself several times while attempting to drive home. Reoccurring problems include rapid deceleration and high engine revs when transmission suddenly shifts at high speeds, or stalling & lack of acceleration when transmission shifts improperly at low speeds (which makes moving the vehicle safely from the roadway difficult). Researching the problem, it appears to be an issue with the leadframe internal to the 6r80 transmission. Apparently there are safety recalls for other Ford suvs and trucks with the same leadframe part all related to unexpected transmission shifts.

2 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2025

Was driving 80mph down the highway when instantly the rear wheels locked up, green wrench came on dashboard and my car came to a screeching halt. Complete loss of power, and am very lucky it did not create a major pile up on the highway! had to "bunny" hop it over 4 lanes of traffic and barely survived the most terrifying experience of my life. Had it towed and the mechanic shop said the throttle body/actuator had magnetic problem which is very common, are you kidding me?! but there are no recalls on it, and they had to replace the entire unit, and now I am scared to death to drive the vehicle ever again. I am also very lucky it did not happen on snow, ice, or rain!!!!! so dangerous and so scary!!!! and I could barely hop it out of oncoming traffic. . . . How can a vehicle go from 80mph to zero in . 02 seconds due to a faulty part and there is no recall???? so grateful to be alive!!!! Ford needs to take some responsibility before there are deaths from a very simple preventative measure due to a part completely failing. After looking it up online I read hundred's of people having the same issue.

3 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2025

While driving at highway speeds very quickly the speedometer went to 0 , the fuel low warning came on , the transmission locked up dragging the rear wheels and engine goes to high rpm , this has happened numerous times , I’ve checked with local Ford dealership and they tell me there are no updates for my vehicle , when this situation happens I pull over to the side of the road and shut vehicle off , count to ten and restart , drive away and wait for the next instance. I have read where earlier Ford products have had this same issue. One additional item on this unit , it has a sporadic 1. 5 amp drain that will kill the battery sometimes , very sporadic. Myself and two others have tried to find this drain but unsuccessfully , took to dealership and $500 later still same issue so I found a electronic battery shutoff with a key fob that disconnects the battery to prevent battery draw , but doing this prevents codes from storing , I have recently started leaving vehicle hooked up to automatic tricle charger to prevent battery from being drained so I can get codes stored up for dealership to troubleshoot at a cost to me off $150 to plug up and read codes. Does that come with lube or will that cost extra ?.

4 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2025

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted. The contact stated that the check engine and advancetrac warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission lead frame needed to be replaced. The contact researched and was became aware of an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 148,000.

5 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2025

While traveling at 40 mph the car suddenly shifted into first gear. At that time the speedometer, trip odometer, and gas mileage indicator all quit working and the service wrench appeared on the reader. The rear tires locked up sending the car into a skid that took the vehicle into the on coming lane luckily not resulting in an accident thanks to the quick reaction of the driver occupying that line. The car was pulled over and shutdown and the system went into limp mode on start up. After taking it to an independent mechanic I was informed that the code p0720 indicating a fault in the output speed sensor, popped when hooked up to computer by the head mechanic. They directed me to Ford as their is a current recall on this model of transmission for 2014 Ford f-150s and 2013 Ford Expeditions and that I should submit an incident to the NHTSA so they are aware that this issue is present in more vehicles with the 6r80 transmission than those currently on the Ford recall.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2025

While driving the truck will shift into 1st gear. It will also shift back and forth between gears randomly. When this happens, the wheels may lock up or just skid. The service engine light will come on, the speedometer will drop to zero while still moving and the "miles to empty" will show at zero miles. Sometime the tire indicator will turn on as well. This may/may not reset when the vehicle turns off and back on. Other times the vehicle will stick in first gear when leaving from a stop. It will also stick in 3rd or 4th gear as well. There have been times where it seems to stick like it was on cruise control but will disengage when the brake it tapped. This all occurs anywhere between a stop position and 50 mph. The problem has been confirmed by a shop as the "molded lead frame" in the 6r80 transmission.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2024

The key to start/stop the vehicle engine could not be removed from the ignition steering column due to a problem with the gear shifter. The gear shifter (on the floor, not the column) thought the car was not in park even though the engine was off and in park. The auto is available for inspection and I took it to christian brothers and they are replacing the shift assembly, Ford part number bl1z-7210-CA. The vehicle only has 75,500 miles on it and I am the original owner and bought it new. The key not being able to be removed when the car is off and in park causes confusion for the driver and concern that the car could be stolen, even with a spare key to access the locked vehicle with the other key in the ignition. Two days prior to the key being locked in the steering column, the shifter began to have a mushy feel to it. My other concerns were the steering wheel to be placed in a locked position while driving the car due to problems with the shifter. The vehicle has not be inspected by the manufacturer or insurance company, just christian brothers who is replacing the entire shift assembly, with a cost around $945.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2024

The contact's father owns a 2014 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while his father was driving at an undisclosed speed, the speedometer was fluctuating. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer, where it was diagnosed that the valve body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Additionally, the contact stated while his father was driving 60 mph, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted to 1st gear. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The driver pulled over to the side of the road temporarily. The driver was able to continue driving; however, the vehicle failed to exceed 40 mph. The contact who is an independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle. The contact determined that the failure was related to an unstated recall. The contact stated that the failure fractured the rocker arms, causing the needle bearings to intrude into engine. The contact determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 212,000.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2023

P0722 code stored in power train control module. Intermittent output shaft speed sensor failure.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2023

My mph gauge is getting stuck while driving causing my vehicle to not shift properly along with not being able to continue to go. This is dangerous I have to pull over immediately and restart the vehicle on the side of the road with my kids and can get hit by an incoming vehicle. I done replaced my pcm and timingchain and still having this issue.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2023

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the rpm's increased rapidly, and he became aware that the vehicle had downshifted on its own, prompting him to pull to the shoulder of the roadway. After restarting the vehicle, it returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the speed sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related it to customer satisfaction program 19n01. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 106,000.

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2023

My mother in law contacted me and stated her 2014 Ford Expedition’s transmission felt like it was failing. I drove same the next day. As I was test driving the vehicle at approximately 60mph down a u. S. Highway, I hear a “clunk” noise and then immediately the rpms went up and the vehicle downshifted into 1st gear causing the vehicles’s wheel to lock up. I went sliding down the highway and luckily didn’t not collide with another vehicle. I had the vehicle scanned and same displayed po722 output speed sensor codes. After further research, I discovered that her transmission is the same model and design as the 6r80 transmissions that were installed from 2011-2017. The 6r80 transmission lead frames were recalled for years 2011-2013 for the exact same safety issue that I encountered. For some reason Ford has done nothing for the 2014 models. This is a huge safety concern. Myself as well as my child could have been seriously hurt or worse as well as the other innocent motorists that were driving around me. Now we are forced to pay $1500 to have a safety issue fixed that in my opinion should be covered due to the safety concern as well as the fact that Ford is already aware of this lead frame issue that occurs in the previous year model. I understand that things happen and parts break but there is no excuse for a vehicle to downshift into 1st gear while traveling 60 and 70mph down the highway and nothing be done to fix the issue from the manufacturer.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2023

Unknown gear shift stuck in park vehicle in town would not move.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2023

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would intermittently downshift as several warning light would appear on the instrument panel. The contact would have to restart the vehicle before he resumed normal driving operation. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer and was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The contact then contacted the manufacturer who referred him to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2023

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly decelerated, with the tachometer at zero. The service engine warning light was illuminated. After restarting the vehicle, the failure was self-corrected. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the extended warranty coverage involving the transmission leadframe repair. The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 140,000.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2022

Wednesday December 28th, 2022. Vehicle gave a short ding while stopped at a traffic light. Dashboard vacillated back and forth between low tire pressure, and empty gas tank. Vehicle was holding half a tank of gas. Upon take off from traffic light speedometer stopped working. Drove 20 miles home and turned off vehicle. Husband took for check drive, everything was working. Friday December 30, 2022 while traveling 65 miles an hour on the freeway, vehicle made a fleeting strange noise coming from the dash. Vehicle involuntarily downshifted to first gear causing vehicle to skid down the highway, tires smoking, out of control. Husband was able to come to a stop at the side of the highway without harming us or anyone else on the road. Engine was revving as if someone was pushing on the gas pedal. Engine was quickly turned off. Eventually vehicle was restarted and showed no signs of what had happened a few minutes before. Made it home without incident on side roads traveling at a low speed. Without the excellent driving skills of my husband, we would have lost control and crashed. At a busier hour multiple vehicles would have plowed into the back of us injuring or killing many. We were both traumatized by the takeover of our vehicle. And yes, the incident could have very well been a detriment to our lives and the lives of others on the road. Vehicle has been parked. Husband visited local Ford dealership explaining what happened. Representative was very well aware of the situation my husband described. He said it has to do with the power train control module. Parts are not available and will not be for months. These parts have been recalled by Ford up to 2013. Ford will not replace part or reset powertrain on our vehicle which is 2014. Quote to fix our vehicle is 3,000. 00 dollars and possibly more depending on what the lock down did to our engine and transmission. On top of that it could be months before they can have to parts to fix it. Vehicle is unsafe.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2022

While driving it would hard downshift and speedometer would glitch, speedometer wouldn't work, all power would go out. I had the work fixed at Ford. They have confirmed that it is the same part that was recalled on the 2014 f150s but the Ford Expeditions are not included. This almost killed me and my daughter driving on icy roads.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2022

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission shifted independently. In addition, the contact stated that the brakes engaged independently. The contact stated that the failure occurred while driving on an icy road during winter. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with failure of the O2 sensor. The contact was informed that the O2 sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 131,000.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2021

Transmission will suddenly shift gear while driving. On one occasion it downshifted to 1st gear as I was travelling down the highway at 70 mph with my family in the vehicle. Tires locked up and vehicle slid but I was able to regain control and did not hit anything. In addition, in multiple occasions the instrument panel shuts off all the gauges for the exception of the rpm's and shows a wrench and loosing some power. Also while driving at low speeds the transmission disengages and slips but no sign of transmission issues. On all instances above I parked the vehicle, shut off for a minute, restart and drove away like nothing happened. No codes, no warnings. Brought it to several mechanics and they are not able to tell me whats wrong. Spoke to Ford and they said is nothing they have seen on the Ford Expedition but the symptoms are similar to an issue on a f-150. I'm very concerned as this can happened at any time and I know if it happens on snow it will probably cause a major accident. Don't feel safe driving the vehicle.

20 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2021

I was driving down the street at 40mph when all of a sudden the transmission down shifted into first gear. Because this happened on its own, there were no brake lights to warn the car behind me that I was slowing down at a rapid rate. The wrench symbol flashed on the dashboard and went away, so I took the vehicle to a Ford dealer the next morning when they opened up.

21 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2021

I was sitting sat a stop light, when the light turned green, I stepped on the gas pedel but the car did not move. I took my foot off the gas, let the engine rpm go down, then stepped on the gas again. As the engine rpm went up, the transmission dropped into gear with a loud, jerking cluck sound. The dashboard flashed and then went dead. I had no speedometer, fuels, coolant, voltage gages, the only thing that worked was the tacometer. I pulled over and turned the car off, but when I started the car again, all the gages worked as normal and drove fine until the next incident.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2021

The SUV gets stuck in first gear and randomly downshifts into first gear regardless of the speed. When pulling out into traffic the SUV will randomly get stuck in first gear and cannot gain speed. I took it to the Ford dealership in September of 2021 and they determined that it was the transmission molded lead frame. This part had a Ford TSB on 2011-2013 Expeditions and Ford replaced the part at no charge on 2011-2013 models. This is the same problem on my 2014 Expedition. Ford ordered a new part in September of 2021at my expense. Today is 2/15/2022 and the part is still not in and the problem continues and is getting worse.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2021

Transmission will suddenly shift gear while driving. One on occasion it downshifted to 1st gear. Luckily we were only going 45 mph, so I was able to maintain control of the vehicle. In a separate instances it downshifted 1 gear while driving 60 mph, remained in the lower gear and appeared to be stuck in that gear, because after coming to a complete stop it was very slow to pick up speed and didn't shift gears. Same thing happened within a 1 1/2 weeks, driving 70 mph, feel a slight jerk, transmission gets stuck in lower gear (noticeable higher rpm) and then magically clears itself up a few minutes later. Took it to 2 different Ford dealers. Both say, the molded lead frame/valve body assembly has gone bad. There is no recall for this, yet we had the exact same issue on a 2013 f-150. There had been a recall for model years (up to 2012) but not 2013. Then a few months later, the 2013 model year as included (I guess enough people complained). Now Ford claims that recall doesn't cover the 2014 Expedition with the 5. 4l engine. Utter nonsense, same problem, same part that is failing/needs replacing.

24 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2021

As I was driving on the freeway my transmission downshifted and my rear wheels locked up and I lost control of my vehicle with all 4 of my children in the car with me! after this happened the check engine light came on and I had the code read at my local auto parts store and the error code was p0720 for the output shaft sensor which is located on the lead frame inside my transmission. I called my Ford dealer to get a quote to fix my car and was told based on my VIN the part number for the faulty part is al3z7g276d. When I looked up this part number on the internet I found that this part was recalled for the same exact thing that happened to me except that the current recall didn’t include my model year and build. I’m confused as to why if the recalled part number is in my truck and I almost died along with all 4 of my children because of it that my car is not covered in this safety recall.

25 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2020

On Sunday November 29, 2020, the vehicle was driven back from church, approximately 10 miles. It was parked on a gravel drive way, in park, and the key removed. The vehicle was exited at approximately 12:35pm. At 2:46pm it was noticed that the vehicle was up against a towable man-lift with the tongue of it inside the front grill of the vehicle. The keys were retrieved from the home's dining room table a short time later and the vehicle was moved off of the man-lift and the parking brake was set to assure that it did not roll again. It was noted that the vehicle was locked, in park, and everything appeared normal. At this point it was realized that a ring camera was observing the area. The video was retrieved to see exactly what happened. The video shows that at 12:41pm, six minutes after parking the vehicle, it began rolling unattended, and came to reset against the man-lift. Shortly thereafter all attempts were made to duplicate the issue by attempting to remove the keys without the vehicle being in park, etc. The incident could not be recreated. The vehicle was taken to reynolds Ford okc the next morning. The video of the event has been provided to reynolds Ford okc. I have worked with the servicing dealer to notify Ford corp. Of this event. Their counsel has advised me that they have no responsibility in the event. I beg to disagree. No vehicle should ever roll when in park, the keys removed and the doors locked. I have a ring camera video of the event that was shared with reynolds Ford and Ford corp. I will be happy to share it with you but your documentation format will not accept videos.

26 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2020

Driving 70 mph on interstate, there was a slight bump and loss of power, check engine and power train light came on followed by a sudden downshift into first gear from sixth and a sudden deceleration. Code read p2070 with same issues and circumstances as 2011-2013 f150.

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2014 Ford Expedition. While driving 30 mph, the transmission experienced a hard gear shift and several unknown warning indicators illuminated. The contact stated that the transmission shifted into second gear and remained in second gear. The vehicle was towed to Ford Lincoln of franklin (located at 1129 murfreesboro rd, franklin, TN 37064, (615) 800-6500) where it was diagnosed that the oss sensor circuit fault-p0722 failed and needed to be replaced. The mechanic was also able to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2014 Ford Expedition. While driving approximately 60 mph, the transmission seized without warning. The vehicle began to skid and the contact was able to shift into neutral. The contact placed the vehicle into drive and accelerated off the highway. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and resume normal driving. The vehicle was driven to ames Ford Lincoln (123 airport rd, ames, IA 50010, (515) 233-1913)where it was diagnosed that the gaskets, connectors, and transmission fluid needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that there were no recalls. The contact was provided case number: cas-21938912. The failure mileage was 146,000.

29 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2019

100306-105660 miles vehicle purchased used -Ford 2014 Expedition would stall occasionally and downshift while on highway and got worse. 5 mechanics (one was Ford dealership), $3000. 00 of guessing and replacing parts (fuel pump& filter, throttle body), almost getting rear ended three times at highway speeds down to 10-20 mph, no codes, 10 weeks of in & out of repair shops, and no one can find problem. Finally got bad enough last mechanic got code of lead frame connector with decoder plugged under dash during test drive. Recall does not include my VIN or model. Ford knows this is a problem and should be held responsible. They should redesign this part and pay for all repairs done to vehicles regardless of where repairs done, year or mileage and how many times this occurs until the problem no longer exists. This problem seems to occur after warranty period has expired as no codes appear in dash or full vehicle scans.

30 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2019

The drivers side door will not always close and secure. The door latch sometimes stays in the open or closed position. The vehicle was stationary. Unsafe as you would have to drive with the door unsecured. Also the shifting lever will occasionally stick in park and will not come out even after applying the brake. Unsafe if you have to stop and put in park on side of road or highway you can't take it out of park when clear to do so. Dealer said they can not repair because they can not duplicate issue. The only way to put the vehicle in motion was to drive with drivers door not secured.

31 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2018

Seems to be the same issue with the 2011 to 2013 6r80 transmissions that a previous recall dealt with. While driving the expidition downshifted by itself causing to go off the road and almost being rear ended. My vehicle is made at the same plant and the recall goes to vehicles manufactured to 4/13 mine was 8/13. Which makes it a new model year 2014. The previous recall was 2011 to 12. The later added 2013 models. They need to look into adding 2014 or later to this list since it is happening to this model as well. I do not feel safe driving my Expedition. Also the speedometer jumped up and down wrench light came on it jump and surges at lower speeds. But shutting it off seems to reset it for a short while but the issue always comes back.
