3 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2024

I experienced the same problem you are investigating in f-150’s: I was traveling on the highway at 75 miles per hour on cruise control - there was a really loud thunk and the Expedition unexpectedly downshifted to a lower gear, I hadn’t touched anything and there was no warning. It was really scary and has made me doubt the safety of this Expedition.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.

5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2024

The failed components are called "cam phasers. " it is a known problem with the Ford 3. 5 ecoboost engine (that even Ford is aware of). The cam phasers can fail, causing the timing chain to fail at any moment. They rattle upon startup of a cold engine. The failure of the original engineering is causing owners of this vehicle, along with the f150 and others, to have to spend anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 in order to replace these. The problem has been confirmed by the Ford dealer. In order to visually examine the cam phasers, it requires something like 10+ hours to open the engine. You do not receive a warning light to replace cam phasers. It is merely an audio diagnosis. Ford should be responsible for replacing these free of charge and replacing them with the newer versions of cam phasers, which apparently don't fail. Driving around with rattling cam phasers can leave you stranded!.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2023

Sudden feel of a misfire putting truck into reverse, definitely caught my attention as vehicle has under 140k miles! just had new Ford spark plugs and lifetime warrantied coil packs in the last 20 to 25k! it's had at least two if not three oil changes in the last 20k to 30k miles! put vehicle into drive same felling of a misfire and doesn't take long it flashes the check engine light at me so I turn around to head back home and haven't really made it but around the corner and the car completely stalled out going by the neighbors house lost steering and brakes and noticed a very distinct smell of plastic/electrical burning! I pop the hood in total disgust and can't even see clearly enough to see the issue at the moment! a friend pulled in front my residence as I'm shaking my head and in tears! he points out a cracked and melted number one coil pack! instantly replaced with nothing was wrong with the previous coil pack that nothing was wrong with but was unsure of the history! I now have a paperweight king ranch Expedition! I'm not to familiar with this current what looks to fixing to be a recall anyway for what sound like the same overall issue as these 2020 and newer models that the fixing to hit! I have repaired my 02' impala of a recall before I new it was a recall! once I received the recall the issue of sudden loss of control of vehicle and engine shut down was already fixed by myself but out of curiosity I took the car in on a scheduled appointment to the gm chevy dealer nearest me to fix the issue under recall that was already fixed! they placed plastic sleeves overs my keys and said done deal! I explained that that will not fix anything safely or permanently concerning these cars issues! voiced my concern there at the dealership, with gm and this organization that I hope that no more loss of life would come from those! my current 2 recalls for my vehicle involved in my complaint today is a weeks if not months long wait to get vehicle back on one and no known.

The failure mileage was 120,000.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2023

The throttle body failed, and my car lost power as I was turning into traffic on the road outside of my subdivision. My car went from approximately 45-50 miles an hour to no acceleration. My car would only go forward at the speed at which it idles. It was very dangerous to me and to others because it was a sudden power failure. The problem was reproduced by the local Ford dealer. I don't know if the component has been inspected by anyone. The first time it happened, there was an orange wrench on my dash with "see owner's manual" under it. This happened at least three times before we took it to our local Ford dealer. The dealership said they couldn't find anything wrong with my car and that I should "drive it till it broke".

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2023

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2023

I was driving at ~40 mph and the car suddenly lost power and decelerated. The wrench dash light came on. The car was forced into limp mode. The p2112 code showed on my obd scanner. The code indicates a throttle body actuator stuck closed. The car started to run very rough, was stuck in 2nd gear and would only do 5 mph. Upon turning off and restarting vehicle the wrench light turned off and the throttle response was normal. I will have to replace the throttle body at my expense as the car is past warranty. I will keep the part for inspection. The road was relatively empty so it did not cause an accident. In heavy traffic at highway speeds this might have caused an injury wreck. The sudden deceleration without any brake lights could easily result in a rear end collision. If the deceleration happened in the middle of an intersection, a side impact or offset front collision could be the result. I have multiple scan tools and am quite proficient at using them. I also have access to the Ford service manuals for my vehicle. No one has inspected the part. The vehicle had no warning lamps prior to incident. The wrench light came on at the same time the car suddenly decelerated.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2023

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that an unknown fluid was leaking from the vehicle in two locations. The engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and informed about a possible catalytic converter failure. The mechanic blew out the parts. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the valve cover gasket was fractured, and the catalytic converter and vacuum pump needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the parts were not available. The dealer used silicon to secure the valve cover gasket. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2022

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at 20 mph and the air condition stopped blowing without any warning. The contact heard a popping sound coming from the vehicle, the contact pulled over on the side of the road and noticed smoke was coming from under the glove department of the front passenger side. The contacted proceed to check under the hood and did not see any smoking coming from under the hood. After closing the hood, the contact notice flames was coming from under the glove department on the passenger side, the contact tried to pull the carpet to stop the flames but it was too late the vehicle was already in flames. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire, the fire department determined that the fire was caused from the air condition blower on the passenger side. A police report was filed. No one was injuries. The vehicle was towed, and it was deemed total lost by the insurance company. The manufacturer was contacted, and they stated that they would contact the contact back. The failure mileage was 120,000.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2022

The vehicle is regularly surging then shifting gears with a loud "thunk" from the transmission. It has made few scary decelerations that shook all of us in the vehicle. The speedometer will jump then drop and bounce back and forth then go to zero. The information on the left panel that shows mpg goes blank. There seems to be an existing issue that is similar with f-150s but the Ford dealer says it is the same thing from a transmission harness/sensor but not a real issue with the Expedition. The airbag light comes on and the check engine light comes on. The check engine light goes away after about 24 hours. It happened 4 times yesterday and 3 times this morning. I can pull over and turn it off and then turn it on again to reboot and it will function until the next failure. I believe this has negatively impacted my transmission. It seems to be worse when it is raining, foggy, or high humidity.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2022

2016 Ford Expedition with 55k miles. Engine blown, hole in side of block. Mechanic has said Ford is backordered 6 months for engines, with 400 in backorder in my region alone. Clearly there is an engine flaw and this engine needs to be recalled.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2022

Exhaust manifold is separating from the engine, causing a chirping noise and allowing exhaust to escape without passing through the muffler.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2022

Water/condensation build-up in charge air cooler collects in tubing and discharges into intake when quickly accelerating from a stopped position or “punching it” to pass a slower vehicle in traffic. This causes my vehicle to go into limp mode and lose all power which can be extremely dangerous in high traffic conditions.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2021

75k miles, 2016 Expedition known throttle body issue. Engaging the "limp mode" happened several times before we could get it into the dealership. Each time was at different speeds and conditions. (** who by the way told us to just keep driving it until our dealership appointment arrived approx. 2 weeks later) not thrilled about this issue. We purchased the vehicle as a family hauler and a road tripper. Do not like the idea of having my kids in the car and the potential of this happening in a dangerous area. Ford dealer replaced the unit 10/8/21 we will see if the replacement will be a permanent fix for the vehicle. It does seem like Ford is dragging their feet on this and not issuing a recall.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2020

We detected a burnt rubber smell while driving on a surface street (with a/c on). The a/c suddenly quit. We pulled over to turn SUV off and back on again hoping a/c would return. A/c did not return, smoke began billowing out of a/c vents. Stopped at a gas station and turned off SUV. The smoke from the vents got thicker and large flames began coming out underneath the dash. Husband ran in to gas station and got a fire extinguisher and put out the fire. Fire kept restarting (the parking lights were on though the car was off). Husband finally had to disconnect the battery to keep fire from restarting. The a/c/heater blower then fell out onto the front passenger floor-mat burned to a crisp.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2020

2016 Ford Expedition el limited - manufactured in dearborn michigan "yellow wrench" warning light came on the freeway and cut 100% of power to the motor, almost causing an accident. I had to traverse traffic to get to a safe area. Called a dealership and they said it was likely the throttle body. Ford implemented a voluntary recall for all other 2015 & 2016 models except the Expedition which is built on the exact same assembly line as the f150 and with the same defective part. Ford recall number was 16b32. I am paying $500 out of pocket since this item is not covered under warranty and my vehicle was not included in the recall. This issue is dangerous and could seriously hurt or kill someone. Ford has had a history of bad throttle bodies and the nhsta needs to have this issue formally recalled.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2020

P2112 error keeps coming up causing sudden lose of power in the vehicle. This has happened while driving on the freeway, causing a panic moment to get to the shoulder, and on city and rural roads. We have to pull over shut the vehicle down and then restart it so that we can continue driving.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2020

While driving on a city parkway going around 35-40mph. My Expedition suddenly started shuddering and decelerating. The wrench light came on. I pulled over to the side of the road. I looked up in the owner's manual what that meant. It said to contact an authorized repair center. I went to the local Ford dealership. They ran the diagnostic and said it was the throttle body. They also stated it is a known problem with the eco-boost engines. This is a known problem with this engine and needs to be recalled before the loss of power and control happens on a busy highway and someone is injured or killed.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2020

Vehicle spontaneously started on fire. It had been turned off at a restaurant in parking area. It had been driven about 3 miles in town just before the fire. The vehicle had low mileage, approximately 50000 miles. No know mechanical or other issues, serviced regularly.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2019

I'm driving at normal speed when suddenly my malfunction indicator lights up and no engine power. The power steering, braking, lighting and climate control systems remain fully functional, however the vehicle no longer remains operational. Ford has a recall 16b32 and customer satisfaction program in other Ford vehicles, but not mine, but the same exact thing is happening. . $890 latter I am having my electronic throttle body replaced with only 52,000 miles and Ford has nothing to say about the problem since the Expedition is not part of the csp. Apparently, in a variety of Ford vehicles, the electronic throttle body internal motor contacts may develop contamination resulting in increased electrical resistance. If this happens, which in my case it did, the mil light came on and the I experienced a decreased amount of engine power and speed and I couldn't accelerate. This happened on the highway, but thankfully I was able to coast to the shoulder without getting hit. The dealer is replacing the throttle body, reprograming my vehicle, and cleaning the injections. There are a lot of complaints about this for the 2016 Ford Expedition, but Ford is not doing anything. I'm glad I was able to get over to the shoulder without getting hit since I had no function to accelerate.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2019

The vehicle was in motion, on a city street lost power ,shut down but didn't cut off no throttle what so ever. . I believe it is the throttle actuator control service code p2112.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2019

Around July 2018 my Expedition started just randomly cutting off while driving with my 2 children in the car. After getting the codes read it came up as the throttle body. We had the throttle body replaced and it seemed to help until about Nov 2018 then instead of cutting off while driving the car would jerk hard and then you could not accelerate over about 50mph. Multiple things started flashing on the dash like the wrench, traction control, hill descent, and check engine. We got all codes read and this time it was the map sensor. We have replaced the map sensor 2 times with the most recent in Jan 2019. Now the Expedition has started to again flash traction control, hill descent, wrench, check engine and the codes are reading map sensor again!! we have spent $200 on each sensor we have replaced which have been 3! we have another appointment at the end of Jan to find out again if it is the map sensor for a 3rd time or if it is some computer malfunction. We have no more warranty. Ford needs to look into this problem as I have read other complaints and it is definitely not safe when I'm driving with my kids and the car jerks and then you can no longer accelerate.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2019

The " wrench " warning light came on while driving on a highway and the car lost power. The car had to be towed . Luckily I was in the right lane.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2018

Carbon monoxide release into car remains even after dealer repair.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2018

8/31/traveling 55 mph and suddenly lost all pedal power on I-40, only able to coast to shoulder. We waited 3 hours on the side of the road for a tow truck while traffic whizzed by dangerously close to our vehicle. Vehicle towed to flagstaff, az nearest city, however it was Friday after hours and the dealership was closed until Tuesday morning due to the labor day holiday. We were stranded in flagstaff until 9/4/18, unable to get authorization for a rental car until it was determined if it was covered by a warranty. Ultimately, they replaced the throttle body. There are many complaints of this same vehicle on the internet. We believe this should be investigated further and recalled if necessary. Please see letter below.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2018

The car lose power on the highway, were you have to stop the car.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2018

While driving the engine goes into "limp mode". This has happened 8 times in the past week at speeds of 50mph or even 15mph driving normal on a highway, country road, and entrance to a parking lot. This is incredibly dangerous because the vehicle has absolutely zero power and driver must place vehicle in neutral and coast to a safe place to pull over. Once pulled over, the vehicle has to be turned completely off and restarted. Afterwards, the vehicle runs very rough and cel is on. The code for the engine light displays the code : 2112 which is the throttle actuator is stuck closed. After doing research, this has been a known issue for years and not being taken of. This could extremely dangerous if someone is going 70mph in traffic, on a bridge, or even 45mph in a construction zone on the interstate.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2018

While in motion on the street and car lose throttle. Pressing the gas pedal did not thing and only made the care stutter. It wouldn't got pass 30miles per hour but also wouldn't stay at 30 either it will go down and up choking on its self. This has happened many times and at any speed. The only way to fix it is to turn the car off and turn it on again. This fix is temporarily and you never know when it will happen again. This is dangerous and it almost cause me to have an accident.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2018

While driving the gas pedal gets stuck and immediately loses power to accelerate. The yellow check engine wrench comes on as the engine sputters. Your only option is to coast to a stop and shut the car off. This comes with no warning and is very dangerous as we almost got rear ended as we were going 40 mph and just lost everything in a moments notice. This is the second time this has happened in 3 months. The first time we were going 35 mph accelerating and shut down and had to stop traffic to restart. We have it scheduled to go into the dealership tomorrow. But looks like this is an issue on several Ford vehicles with a recall on many, just not this one yet. The diagnostic was completed at a Ford dealership and it turn out to be the throttle body. This seems to be a known issues with Ford cars. This is very dangerous as it can happen at any time. Losing control of acceleration can be deadly depending on the circumstances. Once the vehicle is turned off and started up again the problem goes away.

34 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2017

While driving on a city street I lost power and control to the engine. Control of the engine is lost when without warning acceleration is lost. The car will slow until about 5 miles an hour speed. The rpms will fluctuate up and down and stepping on the accelerator does nothing. No warning is given, and I almost got into an accident. The diagnostic was completed at a Ford dealership and it turn out to be the throttle body. This seems to be a known issues with Ford cars. This is very dangerous as it can happen at any time. Losing control of acceleration can be deadly depending on the circumstances. Once the vehicle is turned off and started up again the problem goes away until it happens again, once you have it, the problem will be there until it is repaired and hope that the issues never returns.

35 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2015

My 2016 Ford Expedition el ltd v-6 3. 5l with 354 odometer miles produced 4 minor prelude engine surges within a couple hours on the roadways before it went full throttle 5 times within a couple minutes. It suddenly, and without warning, ran down my wife after squishing her against the garage-bedroom wall (which was destroyed) in reverse, placed me in traffic danger when it raced out of the driveway, placed a witness driving in the street in danger as it backed up, and while turning into my driveway forward, plowed half its length into a neighbors house, and destroyed most of its exterior as a result of the forward and reverse collisions. The brakes were absolutely useless and could not begin to overpower the individual engine full power surges. The air bags never deployed despite the frontal impact exceeding 15 mph. The full throttle engine surge durations approximated 6 seconds each; and, the temporary returns to idle lasted 2-4 seconds. My wife is quite injured; but, could easily have been killed. I was planning a head-on large oak tree ramming to stop the vehicle once-and-for-all. Other people and Ford need to be advised of this potential death trap situation. Please help.
