1 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2026

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 25v197000 (seat belts). However, the parts required to complete the recall repair were not yet available. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that both front seat belt retractors had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed by the dealer that the original seat belt retractors would be reinstalled and would not be replaced due to the manufacturer advising that the recall remedy is currently on hold. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the manufacturer has exceeded a reasonable amount of time to provide a remedy for the recall. The contact had not experienced a failure.

2 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2026

Complaint: while driving at normal road speed with no collision or impact, I experienced a sudden loud “pop” from the driver-side seatbelt area. Immediately after, I noticed a burning smell coming from the same location. I initially believed I had a tire blowout and pulled over to inspect the vehicle. When I attempted to unbuckle and then re-extend the seatbelt, I found that the seatbelt was locked and would not retract or extend normally. The restraint system is now inoperable. This incident appears to be an inadvertent deployment of the seatbelt pretensioner without a crash event, resulting in a restraint system malfunction. The failure occurred during normal driving conditions and without any external trigger. This creates a serious safety risk because: * the seatbelt is no longer functional and cannot properly restrain the occupant * the unintended deployment could startle the driver and lead to loss of vehicle control * the presence of a burning smell raises concern for thermal or electrical hazard within the restraint system I am aware of similar complaints involving unintended seatbelt pretensioner deployment in Ford Expedition vehicles of similar model years. This incident should be investigated as a potential defect affecting occupant restraint systems. I’ve contacted Ford with no help to resolve the issue injury: no crash: no fire: no (burning odor present, no visible flames) speed at time of incident: 35 mileage at time of incident: 170xxx the vehicle’s seatbelt system remains in a failed/locked condition and requires repair.

An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The approximate mileage was 93,672.

5 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2025

I have a recall for my seatbelt that my local Ford dealership still has been completed. I've been waiting for months and they tell me the parts aren't available yet. I researched these parts online and they show that they are indeed available for my 2019 Ford Expedition limited max. I'm leaving for a 4,000 mile vacation on 2/19/2026 and would like this recall taken care of before I leave [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

7 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2025

I was driving and the seatbelt exploded. Started smelling like it was burning super loud explosion it’s a good thing I didn't crash and hit somebody . I’ve never had anything like that in my life happen before.

8 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2025

Yesterday, while I was driving to pick up my kids from school, my 2019 Ford Expedition, the driver’s side seatbelt literally exploded — it went off like it would in a crash (but there was no crash). I was driving when it exploded and tightened so tight on me. Now the seatbelt doesn’t work at all. It was terrifying, so loud and painful. This is part of a known recall issue. When the dealership had my car back in may to replace my cam phasers, they told me the seatbelt recall parts weren’t available yet. Fast forward to now — the seatbelt has gone off, the vehicle can’t be driven safely, and Ford (both the local dealership and customer service) is saying there’s nothing they can do for me right now. The dealership told me I would have to pay to have it towed and pay for a rental. Also, they aren’t sure how fast they can get parts or diagnose it. I’m honestly at a loss. This is a safety recall, and I can’t use my car because of it. I literally just paid $2400 in may for my cam phasers and now this.

9 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2025

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph with the driver's seat belt fastened, she observed a loud explosion inside the vehicle, and then she felt what she thought was an impact to her chest, and the wind was knocked out of her as she began gasping for air. The contact stated that she believed she had been shot. The contact added that she steered the vehicle to the side of the road and where she observed that the driver's seat belt did not extend or retract, and the air bag warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that after 20 minutes, she observed a swollen imprint of the seat belt, which eventually scabbed over. 911 was called, but medical attention was not needed. The contact stated that she continues to drive the vehicle, but had to buckle the seat belt behind her while driving so that the notification chimes do not go off continuously while driving. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.

10 Seat Belt problem

The failure mileage was 90,000.

12 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2025

On [xxx], the seatbelt pretensioner on my 2019 Ford Expedition max platinum suddenly discharged without warning while the vehicle was stationary. It emitted a loud noise, caused the seatbelt to lock, and released a strong burning smell, consistent with prior reports linked to recall 24v099 / 25v197000. I purchased this vehicle used on [xxx] from taverna Infiniti of north miami (FL). At the time of sale, the dealership: •did not disclose any active recalls •provided an inspection form stating the seatbelt and warning systems were “ok” •sold the vehicle with an illuminated airbag (srs) warning light •delivered the vehicle with a non-functional driver-side tail light four days later ([xxx]), the dealer sent me a carfax report showing the vehicle had an active NHTSA safety recall (24v099), issued in February 2024, with a known remedy available. The dealership knowingly sold a vehicle with an unrepaired safety defect, and the defect has now resulted in an actual pretensioner discharge — which could pose a fire risk and compromised occupant protection. I am currently working to have the vehicle serviced at a Ford-authorized dealer. I am reporting this event to document: •the failure of the seatbelt pretensioner •the dealer’s noncompliance with safety disclosure obligations •the risk posed to other consumers information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

19 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2024

My husband was driving and I was in the passenger seat we were driving slow because we were coming to a stop at a red light. All of a sudden we hear a loud sound like a shotgun went off in the car. It felt like something hit my chest hard and like a puff of air. My seat belt all of a sudden was squeezing me. Then it smelled like gun powder. My husband and I were stunned and couldn't understand what had just happened. He thought someone shot at us or something exploded under the car. I was in so much pain I unlocked the seatbelt and I opened my door in the middle of all the traffic stopped and I got out. I felt like I was going to faint. My husband was asking if I was bleeding anywhere. I was looking and saying no but I couldn't understand what just happened. I starting crying and got in the back seat. My husband asked if I wanted to go to the hospital and I said and tell them what! they will think I am crazy. Went to my daughters crying the whole way. She googled and ended up finding a problem with the seat belts. I then started looking as well and came across this man that was on a Ford forum and explained the exact same thing happened to him and his wife. I am so glad we were not going any faster because I don't know how we would have not had an accident. I am now scared of my car and using seatbelts. I called the dealer today and I have an appointment for Monday to get it all looked at. Very disturbing on so many levels.

While parking my car in my driveway as I turned the car off I heard a loud explosion in the car. There was some smoke coming out of the passenger side seatbelt area of the frame. I could smile gunpowder. The interior trim piece around the seat belt had come loose. There was a warning sign that had come on that day and I was going to check it out this weekend. I had the dealership come and get the car to check it out. I looked at an article from you that this has happened before and I think it was the seatbelt pretensior. Thanks.

22 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2024

On 9. 5. 24, the driver passenger seatbelt retractor pretensioners deployed inadvertently while I was driving 15 mph in my residentail home street. In the meantime, the car is unsafe to drive and I was told they would not release the car back to me unless I signed a waiver stating I know it is unsafe to drive. The dealership stated they could not provide me with a loaner car, and loaner cars are not covered when there is a recall.

28 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2024

I exited the freeway and pulled straight in to a gas station, as I was coming to a stop I felt a powerful thud in my chest, heard an explosion or gun shot sound, and lost my vision for a split second. As it returned I fully expected to see my airbag had deployed in my chest, however my steering wheel was in tact. My entire chest felt like I had been punched. I looked into the mirror and noticed my collar bone was already red, as well as my right lower quadrant. I sat there and began to cry as I had no idea what had happened. I began to notice the smell of an explosion like fireworks. I asked my passenger if she saw what happened as she sat there looking at me terrified. Her response was 'no but I heard it, did we just crash?' my next thought was I had a seatbelt airbag deploy. I examined my belt and there was no airbag in it. At this time I noticed the belt was fully extended and would not retract back into the slot. I got out of the vehicle to do a walk around to make sure I had not triggered an airbag sensor. There was no damage. Now I was terrified because I had no clue what happened and my chest hurt so bad. I began to do research online and found out I had a recall on my seatbelt. I concluded it was in fact my seatlbelt when the red spots on my left collar bone turned into 1in x 0. 5in abrasions the following morning. 18 hours later my right eye ball began to feel bruised. By 24 hours I began to have a headache and nausea. I was seen in the er and had to have a CT scan of my head, neck, and chest. Although my scan came back clear I was diagnosed with contusions to my chest, a closed head injury, and a subconguctival hemorrhage. By 36 hours my sclera was swollen and there was little to no visible white. At this point I was seen by opthalmology. He said the hemorrhage was very large and caused by such a sudden increase in intracranial pressure. The prognosis was good, treatment was steroid eye drops and rest. I now have alot of anxiety that it may happen agai.

31 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2024

I was sitting in the passenger seat unbuckling the seatbelt. A loud noise went off behind me right almost like a gun shot. The seat shot from my hand and tore the leather in the car near the wind. The seatbelt also started smoking and left a smoke residue on the car. The seatbelt in locked in position and cannot be used any more. My right thumb was hit and at this time is in excruciating pain. I cannot make a fist. I’m headed to the doctor for more specifics.

33 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2024

In or around October I reported my seatbelt tensioner/retractor explosive device deployed almost causing me to have an accident. After really complaining to Ford, they finally fixed it. Now my warning light came on pertaining to my passenger side tensioner. I also received the notice, and went to my dealership. They had the vehicle for a week and could not fix it. They said Ford has to ok it and supply the parts, and it could take all the way to the end of 2024. They gave me the vehicle back, refused a loaner and said their hands were tied. I can tell you first hand that someone may die or cause a serious accident if driving at high speed when the device deploys. It is as loud as a 45 cal or shotgun, inside the cab. The spl is enormous and the seatbelt tightens 3 to 4 inches, causing disorientation, total fear and loss of control of the vehicle. My incident caused me to have irregular heartbeat and I ended up in the hospital. They need to replace these devices ASAP, befoe someone dies.

34 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2024

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the front driver's seat belt retractor pretensioner had inadvertently deployed. The contact pulled over and called her father, who researched and discovered that the VIN was associated with NHTSA campaign number: 24v099000 (seat belts). The contact stated that she had not received notification of the recall. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the front driver's seat belt retractor needed to be replaced; however, parts for the recall repair were not yet available. The contact was informed that she could pay for the repair and keep the receipt for reimbursement from the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 95,801.

35 Seat Belt problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2024

My wife was driving her 2019 Expedition alone approximately 50 mph and unexpectedly heard what she described as a gunshot and the seatbelt instantly tightened against her. There was no warranted reason for this incident. There was no collision, not even a jolt to the vehicle such as a pothole or the like. This is the second time occurrence to this vehicle. The front passenger side seatbelt did this 7 months ago with no one seated there. The airbag light has been on since the first incident. Now the driver's seatbelt is stuck in that position, will not retract or adjust at all. We will be bringing the vehicle in to a dealer to access issue.
