This was a rental vehicle obtained from budget at norfolk International airport. On September 17, 2026 at approximately 2:45 p. M. , while driving south toward north carolina, the Ford Expedition developed increasingly severe rumbling and shaking and became difficult to control. All occupants noticed the condition. We reduced speed and pulled off at the first safe available location at approximately 3:00 p. M. Rather than continue driving. After stopping, we inspected the left-rear wheel and found a snapped wheel stud and a missing lug-nut position. Multiple actual threaded lug nuts were loose enough to be turned by hand. Budget roadside assistance dispatched a tow operator. The tow driver independently verified the snapped stud and multiple loose lug nuts and recorded the condition on video before tightening the loose lug nuts so the vehicle could be loaded for towing. The vehicle had approximately 77,000 miles. No crash occurred and no one was injured because we stopped driving once the vehicle became difficult to control. Our party included two young children in car seats. We do not know when or why the wheel stud fractured or why the remaining lug nuts became loose. We are reporting this because a wheel-fastener condition severe enough to cause substantial vibration and difficulty controlling the vehicle could create a serious risk of wheel separation or loss of control if it occurs in this vehicle or in similarly maintained vehicles. The rental vehicle VIN is 1fmjk2a83rea33259. We have photographs/video and are seeking the rental company's maintenance and inspection records.

The contact stated that when the vehicle was turned off and restarted, the system was functional. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, who checked the 12-volt battery and found that the battery was operational and there were no other electrical issues. The contact stated that later, while starting the vehicle, the message "loss of power steering assist" was displayed, and the steering wheel was difficult to turn to the left or the right. The vehicle was turned off and restarted, and regained power steering functionality; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact attempted to reset the electrical system by disconnecting the battery terminals. The contact stated that loss of power steering reoccurred with the loss of the lane keep assist feature. The contact had taken the vehicle back to the same dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and checked the wiring harness and coated the terminal connectors with a gel for better connectivity. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failures reoccurred. Additionally, the contact stated that the “driving modes” light was illuminated. The contact stated that while attempting to switch modes to snow or sport, or another option, the light illuminated with the message that each selected mode was unavailable. The contact stated that the vehicle would be taken back to the dealer for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.
At highway speeds, the car shakes/vibrates. It's scary. Took vehicle to Ford service. They identified the problem, acknowledged that it exists and was unable to fix it. Now, I'm stuck with this car that shakes and seems unsafe as it shakes. Additionally, was told by the Ford dealer that other Ford Expeditions have come in with the same problem and have been unable to remedy. Even with a case open with the Ford engineers, they were unable to fix. Ford motor company has been contacted about the issue along with the executive offices of Ford and the ceo.
