Wiring problems of the 1996 Ford Explorer

Four problems related to wiring have been reported for the 1996 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Wiring problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2006

Running taillights become dim then fail completely with the smell of burnt wiring, coming from the dashboard vicinity. On board computer shows no failure and front running/marker lights still operable. No other exterior lighting failure.

2 Wiring problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2005

The truck was parked inside the parking lot and it caught on fire. No injuries reported. Driver called the fire department to extinguish the fire. Vehicle was towed and totaled by the insurance company.

3 Wiring problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2002

Center console with computer info display caught fire while driving.

4 Wiring problem

Failure Date: 04/06/1998

Electrical fire broke out in center console while vehicle was parked.
