Fuel Pump problems of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Five problems related to fuel pump have been reported for the 1997 Ford Explorer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 03/06/1999

Upon starting the Explorer fuel gauge drops down from half tank to empty. After about 10 minutes the fuel gauge shows the correct amount of fuel. The fuel gauge was replaced in March of 99, and the fuel pump was replaced on 4/1//99. Conusmer is still experiencing a problem with the Explorer. Please provide any further details.

2 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 02/01/1998

When putting gas into the gas tank, the pump will shut off and the gas will spill out. It take's five times as long to get gas into tank.

3 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 08/28/1997

Vehicle was involved in a collision, and the next day the vehicle caught on fire on the right hand side by the head lights of the passenger side. Dealer looked under the hood, and said that the fuel pump caused the fire. Consumer states that this reason does not make any sense.

4 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 04/18/1997

While driving at highway speed, suddenly vehicle lost power. Vehicle towed, dealer replaced fuel pump.

5 Fuel Pump problem

Failure Date: 03/23/1997

When vehicle is parked at a slight incline it will not start with less than 2 gallons of fuel remaining due to fuel pump.
