The right rear tire on my Ford Explorer sport failed while travelling at approximately 45 mph on a dry flat cool roadway in April 1999. The nature of the flat was very unusual. . . So catastrophic that I made a search of the roadway for several feet to look for debris. I found none, however the tire looked as though the tread had been peeled away from the tire about halfway up the sidewall. The tires were adequately inflated and the failure occured quickly. The tire had almost 19,000 miles on it at the time. Unfortunately, the tire was replaced and taken by the tire dealer. I replaced it at my own cost. There were no injuries in this accident. I would like this to show up in the record because I am suspicious that the 16" wilderness at tires may also me faulty, despite what firestone and Ford say. Since new, the tires in question have bubbles on every sidewall. And the tires are already cracking. (tiresize: p235/75r15)( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 ).
While driving, firestone wilderness tire became flat, a local firestone dealer stated that a somewhat angular basalt rock had penetrated the tread and caused the tire to go flat, dealer also stated that vehicle was not designed to be driven off of paved roads, consumer feels this happened because the tires have very thin treads and sidewalls, a couple months after the first tire failure another tire failed exactly the same way, consumer had the front two tires replaced after the firestone dealer looked at the numbers on the tires.
Faulty firestone wilderness at tires caused vibration while driving and consumer noticed cracks in the sidewall, consumer replaced the tires. Nlm.
Was washing vehicle & noticed cracks on all four of the tires. Original equipment. Cracks are located where tread meets the sidewall. Took to dealer & indication was that tires which were not affected due to being manufactured in canada. Firestone, wilderness at, p235/75r15 with 39,000 miles.

I have a 97 Ford Explorer - the tires on my SUV now are direct from firestone. I just wanted to note that factory tires that I had originally did in fact 'almost' split. By the time I had them replaced (at around 50,000 miles) there was a 6" line of steel showing through rubber on the inside sidewall on the back two tires. I'm very glad that I got them replaced when I did - but I thought that this information might be of some help. The only symptom that I had was a shake in my car once I hit 70 mph. If I had not done any highway driving I never would have known about this until it was too late. I went to my Ford dealer & asked him to inspect my tires for the same problem as the 235 series. He siad " looks just like the others, you should be very concerned. " my tires are cracking circumferentially around the border of the tread and sidewall, as well as with in the tread itself. I am a bit scared about the tread tearing off, they look really bad( dot number: vncu1px356 tire size: 255 70r 16 ).
Sidewalls cracked on all four tires, was told by firestone to have them inspected and when I went to firestone dealer and was told that if the tires were found to be unsafe,the best they could do is take the milage into consideration and prorate a new set of tires.
