On Monday my future son-in-law was driving my Ford Explorer and experienced the cruise control refusing to disengage while traveling at 70 mph. He tried to disengage the cruise control by braking and by turning it off. Neither worked. He tried to shift it into neutral only to have the engine rev to high rpm, so he put it back in gear and forced to car to stop using the brakes fighting the engine. Probably ruining the brakes in the process. I recently had my vehicle serviced as relating to a recall concerning the speed control deactivation switch. The switch was not replaced after a visual inspection.
My 2000 Ford Explorer XLT caught on fire for no apparent reason. My daughter and I were at a friend's house, we were in the process of backing out of the drive when smoke started coming from under the hood. I pulled the car off to the side of the road and put it in park and turned off the engine, the smoke got much worse. My daughter and I got out of the Explorer just as it was catching fire. We called 911, the car was a total loss. The whole incident is unbelievable, we are shocked. My insurance adjuster informed me that it wasn't uncommon and mentioned something about a recall on the cruise control. I bought my Explorer in indiana, but have moved to tennessee. I never received a recall, I'm still waiting on my insurance company to get back with me.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Explorer. After being parked for 20 minutes with the engine shut off, the front end of the vehicle burst into flames in the engine compartment. The fire department arrived and assisted in extinguishing the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle is still parked in the contact's driveway. He sent the manufacturer some requested documents. Ford explained that there was a recall on that vehicle for the cruise control, which was the cause of the fire. The contact stated that the recall repair had previously been performed; however, the failure still occurs. The vehicle was destroyed. The NHTSA campaign id number was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 79,000. Updated 11/26/08. Updated 12/01/08.
Recall notice from Ford on my cruise control 8 months ago. I got a notice in September of 2007 telling me to get it back to the dealer for a repair. It is now April of 2008 and I just got off the phone with both the local dealer halderman Ford of allentown,PA and the toll free number of Ford for recalls. Both locations tell me that they have no idea of the availability of repair parts. Almost 8 months later???? and still no parts to repair this. And to think that I should need another vehicle, I will be hard pressed to consider Ford after being treated this way.
In January 2008 I took my 2000 Ford Explorer to courtesy Ford, in altoona, PA to have the recall service performed. They did not have the necessary parts, so they ordered them and disconnected my cruise control to make the car safe to drive. On February 26, I called and was told my part had arrived. When I took it in, they discovered that only one of two required parts had arrived, and they could not repair my cruise control. I left on a business trip the following day. I was to return on March 7, 2008 and my girlfriend and three daughters were driving to the airport to pick me up. About 40 or 50 miles into the trip she noticed the car was losing power because it was not pulling up a hill well and the engine began running roughly. She pulled over to the side of the road. At this point, the Explorer had a little bit of smoke coming from under the hood. She turned the car off and waited a moment, then saw the smoke getting worse. She and my daughters got out of the car and she called 911 for help. Other drivers stopped to assist, but while she was on the phone the Explorer broke into flames, starting from under the driver's side. The Explorer and my belongings were destroyed, but luckily everyone got out safely. My daughters said that they could see flaming liquid (melted plastic or brake fluid) dripping onto the ground under the car while it was burning.
I received the original recall notice in August 2007. I contacted the local Ford dealer and was told that the part required was on order with an anticipated arrival date of late October 2007. I then received a postcard telling me I could have a "temporary" fix of having my cruise control completely disabled. As of this date, I am now being told that the part may not be available until January 2008. I have a lengthy commute, I paid for and do use my cruise control feature. I don't think 6 months is "temporary" and would like my vehicle properly fixed in a reasonable time. Six months is not reasonable for a safety recall.

A recall was issued in August 2007 for the speed (cruise) control deactivation switch (recall 05s28). It is now April 2008 and I have not been contacted for the replacement part. Ford stated in their letter that their "commitment, together with Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers, is to provide you with the highest level of service and support. " I think that after 8 months, a "reasonable time" has been exceeded. It has become frustrating and expensive having to wait this long for a simple fix. Ford motor company has displayed a failure to "provide me with the highest level of service and support. " what has happened is, that Ford motor CO. Has failed to produce enough parts to support this recall. They know how many vehicles were potentially covered with this recall and should have prepared to replace/service this part in a "reasonable amount of time". Meanwhile, I have been forced to be inconvenienced and absorb additional expense due to Ford motor CO. 's incompetence and short sighted.
In August 2007 I received a safety recall notice (05s28) for my 2000 Ford Explorer and have periodically been contacting the local Ford dealership but the necessary repair parts are still not available, 8 months later. The latest call earlier this week generated the usual response of "call back in 30 days. " I'm reluctant to exercise the alternative of disconnecting the speed control system for fear of never getting the necessary repairs. The risk of a fire is a serious concern.
It is completely unacceptable that Ford issued a recall in August 2007 and the replacement part is still not available as of today 2/18/08. I was told by the dealership that Ford is telling them to tell owners to check back at the end of April 2008 for the speed control deactivation switch. I've been checking since sept. 2007 when they told me to check back at the end of Jan. 2008. This is ridiculous!.
Rec'd recall #05s28 from Ford motor company. Recall was for possible fire due to a leak in the cruise control. We rec'd this recall in August of 2007. We called dealer in klamath falls, or and put on a waiting list since the part to fix the recall was not available. We keep calling but the part is still not available. I use my cruise control all the time and am very concerned that my car may start on fire. I have grandchildren in car seats that I am afraid I might not be able to get out quickly enough. This is a totally unacceptable length of time to wait for it to be fixed when this is a safety issue. We tried calling the Ford motor CO. Customer service center and got a recording telling us to call our local dealer. We would appreciate your help with this matter.

Had wreck. Did have cruise control on at the time. Car would not slow down through intersection. Proceeding to hit new Honda which had only been purchased 2 weeks. The Honda had 7,000. 00 dollars in damage . Luckily I had insurance to cover it. My Ford Explorer was totaled!!!! about two days later we received a letter in the mail, stating there was a problem with the cruise control. The Explorer had a 1000. 00 deductible. And safeway insurance came and got the SUV. Oh I did included the recall letter in truck! and the insurance company has a copy also. Plus I had to purchase another vehicle which I could not afford! since I am on disability and everything it is hard to make payments. I was letting everyone know they really need to get the speed control fixed ASAP! I am not sure of the exact date of the accident it might have been the first part of July.
The problem started with the drivers door it would not open , with the remote control , the actuator works but the door latch would not open after several weeks of having to open it with the keys I took the door panel open and spay some wd-40 and it started to open but as time when on the rear passenger doors have started to do the same , the child safety locks have got jam and now both doors are failing at one point the rear driver side door didn't open and I had to take it to a mechanic to get it to work but the problem still persists and now the front passenger door does not open it got stock and the handle to open the door has fallen off it has been such a frustrating problem and I went to find out how much it would cost for the parts and its going to cost about $87. 00 per door not including the labor and it very frustrating I wish they do something about it also their was a recall for the cruise control I went to the dealer to get it fix , and they disconnected the cruise control I have call several times they say their is no openings and it has now been four years I have given up.
Reported same issue to the NHTSA on Feb 1, 2005. . . On January 12, 2007, my husband was driving our Explorer to work. He accidentally bumped the cruise control and the car began accelerating rapidly. He was able to put the car in neutral and pull to the side of the road without incident and turn the vehicle off, but he was unable to start it up again, the battery was drained. A friend of ours came and gave him a jump start, the car turned on but the engine was revving and he couldn't get it to stop. They car was towed to a local mechanic and they found that the cruise control cable was stuck internally which was causing the cruise control to stick and made the car accelerate on it's own. They disconnected the cable from the throttle body to prevent this from happening again. I contacted Ford and spoke to a rep named frankie and filed yet another complaint, but they don't want to help us out at all. They want us to take the car to a dealer and pay for them to inspect the car.
Contact states 2000 Ford Explorer XLT fully loaded vehicle had been parked for 16 hours without being moved. At 5:00am. On 7-8-05 her car caught on fire. It was totally destroyed along with a laptop computer. The whole inside of the car was engulfed in flames. The fire department investigated the fire and said the fire seemed to originate from near the dash on the passenger side dash panel. She never received a recall notice.
2000 Ford Explorer was parked in front of the house. The consumers daughter saw t he vehicle on fire. The fire department said it was most likely a faulty circuit breaker.
Our 2000 Ford Explorer was sitting in the drive way for at least 3 hours and around 10:30pm (central), our neighbor came knocking at our door and told us that our Explorer was on fire. I am now with out a vehicle to go to work and the insurance did not pay off all of the vehicle. I now have to sacrafice to pay for something I do not have and save for another vehicle at the same time.
While driving approximately 55 mph with cruise control enabled, consumer applied the accelerator pedal to pass the vehicle in front. After passing the vehicle consumer applied the brakes and cruise control did not disengage. There was no accident, but the cause could not be determined.
While driving 65 mph cruise control engaged without warning, and vehicle accelerated to a high rate. Consumer shifted to neutral to decelerate the vehicle.
Consumer states that the cruise control would not disengage and the cruise control switch would not turn off while driving 70 mph. Vehicle at the dealer. Feel free to provide any further information. Nlm.
Cruise control stuck - dealer treating as recall per Ford recall #99s09 dealing with sticking cruise control. Cruise control would not release throttle (brakes or off switch for cruise control) - vehicle had to be put into neutral, stopped and then engine stopped. This is a potentially fatal design error. The cruise control servo needs to relinquish control of the vehicle throttle once brakes or off switch engaged. It seems to be a re-occurence of the previous problem or an extension of the previous problem. Vehicle build date was 12/06/00, per dealer.
While drving at 10 mph, consumer accidently activated the resume cruise control which was previously on, and vehicle suddenly accelerated, hitting a concrete wall. Minor injuries sustained.
The vehicle would crank and then immediately die. In order to keep it running you would have to increase the rpms to above 1500. You would have to hold down the brake and accelerate at the same time to be able to drive. This happened twice. I took the vehicle to a local shop since Ford claimed they did not know what the problem could be. After explaining the situation the mechanic informed me that he was 99% sure it was the electronic idle controller because he had replaced several of them on Explorers which corrected the problem. This is a potential dangerous situation if you are not aware of how to over come the situation in a time of crisis. I believe that Ford has a major problem here that needs to be investgated before someone is seriously injued or possible killed. The cost to repair was approximately $175. 00, however I spent another $100. 00 changing filters and cleaning injectors thinking it was a fuel problem.
Idle speed control valve failures on Ford Explorers cause the vehicle to crank, start, then immediately shut off. The vehicle will not maintain idle. The only way to keep the engine running is to continue to apply throttle. This is potentially hazardous if performed while in drive or reverse, as unintended acceleration (I. E. Audi 5000) can result. Many Explorer owners have experienced this problem. Local Ford dealer charges $200 to replace the valve.
Vehicle has rough idle almost to the point of stalling. Dealer says they cannot repair. Ford customer assistance says they can do nothing.
Consumer 2000 Explorer cruise control does not work properly. ** answer required*** the consumer stated the cruise control was inoperative. ( the letter is written in spanish).
2000 Ford Explorer with speed control recall. Consumer states that she received her recall in September 2007. She states that the dealer disabled the cruise control. Dealer keeps telling her the parts are not available.
While the consumer was driving with cruise control on at 63 mph the vehicle slowed down, the check engine light came on and the engine stalled.
Trouble starting. Had to replace idle air control motor.
While driving with cruise control on at 55mph, and after trying to apply brakes to remove cruise control, vehicle accelerated to 70mph on two occasions. Dealer notified and is waiting for part which is not in stock.
