36 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2021

The airbag light came on. We took it to a dealer to diagnose. They found that the fault was in the 2nd row seat inflator. The following is from the dealer repair invoice: "checked dtc's: b141c is present for 2nd row inflator fault. Followed ppt. Found needs c3133 & c3134 replaced both due to pin fittment. Will require to replace both. Removed and replaced connector and eight air bag wires. Spliced in new harnesses. Re-route harness on seat bottom. " everything seemed fine after that but you can't really 'test' whether the airbags will go off or not. Is this related to all of the other airbag problems? the car is not that old (2016) with only 67931 miles at the time so seems strange that this type of issue should occur. I felt that it was worth reporting.

My airbags light comes on and stays on someone's and I looked it up in my owners manual and it says to get it checked immediately due to a malfunction with the shit bags. My problem is when I called them the light had went back out. Everytime it comes on and stays on I'm nowhere near my dealer. So it hasn't been checked out by them yet.

43 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2021

Air bag light came on and I took it to vancouver auto group. Finding from diagnose electrical system include: rcm: b141b:13, checked oasis, TSB 16-0001 applies, checked behind second row seat and inspected connectors c3133 and c3133 and c3134, connectors have not yet been rerouted and replaced, recommended wire in new pigtails and reroute wiring harness in both seats and retest. Estimated cost is $1500. I researched and found over 50 other complaints of Ford Explorer owners with the same complaint. This should be recalled as it is not the vehicle owners fault that the connectors have failed and car needs rewired. This is not covered by extended warranty. This is a safety concern and is not being addressed by Ford.

45 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2021

Air bag light came on randomly one day, diagnostics indicated it was an issue with the wiring harness under the rear passenger second-row seating. This area is inaccessible so accidental disconnection is unlikely. I was told that the airbags will not deploy in the event of an accident when the airbag light is on. This certainly was the case for me as the airbag light was on at the time I was in an accident with contact to my driver's side front bumper and the airbag did not deploy. My grievance is that this is a common issue that Ford is aware of and no recall has been put in place to fix it. It is unacceptable for a manufacturer to be aware of a problem and not fix it especially as it is costly to the consumer. Quoted $1,000+ for repair. Most importantly, it is a safety issue.

46 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2021

Vehicle has a known airbag malfunction that is covered by a manufacturer published service bulletin. Ford and their dealerships refuse to perform published safety service bulletin without charging for parts and labor. Ford and dealerships response to issue is that without the at owner cost repair of the faulty safety restraint, the entire safety system may not function. Bulletin is TSB 16-0001 owners have no operable safety system unless paying to repair a known safety issue.

50 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2020

When backing out of my driveway and turning slowly there is a poping noise and my steering wheel locked up multiple times. Before this I spent 1000 bucks to get the wiring harness for air bags replaced. None of them work Ford would not cover it because there is not a recall.

51 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2020

On August 20, 2020, my vehicle had last been driven around 12 noon. It sat in the driveway with all of us home. My son went to get in the vehicle around 6:30 pm. Smoke poured out, the seat was smoldering and flames came up. We couldn't put the fire out with extinguisher. Fire department put hose on seat. Firemen stated they see this often with heated/airconditioned seats that malfunction and burn up or cause fire. Firemen stated they could tell the way it looked "like all the other heated /air conditioned seats that ignite that they see often". Insurance company says car is totaled since hose was put on it. Ford will not work with me. No one left anything burning in the seat or smoked in the car. I believe the car heated/air conditioned seat malfunctioned and Ford should help. I had purchased bumper to bumper warranty from dealership. Warranty company says if a car catches fire, warranty is voided, even if car malfunctioned causing the fire. Insurance company is trying to pay as least amount as possible. This was a well cared for, very nice car. I believe it malfunctioned. Ford motor company sent me a letter saying they had the dealership take pictures, and they feel it had something left burning on the seat. No one left anything burning on the seat. In the letter Ford motor company sent me by email, they state they inspected the car. They never came to see the car in person. They only had the service staff take pictures. The car was sitting in the driveway all afternoon. I also backed out of the driveway in my Subaru at 5:00 pm and did not smell or see smoke as I left. . The passenger seat that ignited itself had a stack of business papers and some soccer gear that could have overheated if the seat was malfunctioning too. The seat ignited by itself. As a consumer I deserve to be assisted. I would like the car repaired or replaced w/similar car.

52 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2020

Another 2016 Explorer with an airbag malfunction. Obdii check is not showing any faults. I haven't taken it to dealer yet, but I am assuming it's the same or similar fault to what others are seeing on here and elsewhere.

53 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

Ford issued a customer satisfaction program 21b11 regarding the 2nd row seat belt worn or damaged electrical connection which results in the air bag light illuminating. My vehicle is doing this after arguing with the dealership because they did not want to fix it. Only to get my vehicle scheduled on 01/24/23, and this expired on 1/21/23 so Ford will not pay to fix the problem.

54 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2019

On 3/21/19 I was driving when a car stopped in front of me and I hit them. My airbag went off and was smoking black smoke. There was also a fire, about 1. 5 ft tall that appeared from the passenger side of the hood. I sat in shock until someone told me to get out. I got out and grabbed my 4 year old daughter. She was in a car seat and still secured after the accident. Thankfully we were not seriously injured. We sat watching my car quickly engulf in flames. By the time the fire department came the car was pretty much all burned. I lost a lot of valuable and sentimental personal belongings in my car which insurance does not cover the cost of. It was a terrifying experience to go through for my daughter and I. I do not believe that a minor accident should cause a fire like this. I have reached out for Ford multiple times and they will not investigate which I find extremely frustrating. I would like to prevent this horrible thing happening to someone else. Although we were not injured it could have been a lot worse, and even deadly.

55 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2019

The airbag controller light is on on the dash. I had a diagnosed and my dealership and they come to say that the wiring harness control in the rear airbags is damaged and needs to be replaced. The dealership I said this is a significant issue that has been noticing in 2016 Ford explore models more and more. I am curious if this is a safety recall that needs to be taken care of by Ford.

56 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2019

I have a 2016 Explorer which has 2nd row airbag seatbelts. When purchasing my car it was explained to me that rear airbag seatbelts were the best safety feature for children. I did not have children at the time. I now have a 2 year old whom will be exceeding the latch weight limit shortly. Upon attempting to install his car seat rear facing, it became apparent I am unable to run an airbag seat belt through my childs car seat. It is a extreme safety hazard. I requested my seat belts be changed out for regular seat belts and I was told this could not be done as it would deactivate my cars airbags system. Please help me find a solution as I cannot put him in the center seat. His car seat does not fit being the center seat of the Explorer is not a full-sized seat. I have spoken with Ford corporate office, the dealership (oc welch Ford in hardeeville, SC) and have gotten little to no assistance other than there is nothing they can do but assist me in finding a new car to purchase. That is the last thing I want to do. I am at a loss and only want what is best for my child. I cannot risk him being injured. Who can I contact to get this resolved? please advise urgently.
