The contact owns a 2001 Ford Explorer. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 03v281000 (seats). The contact stated that her son noticed that the front driver's seat was hard to recline up and down. The vehicle was taken three times to shaker's family Ford Lincoln (831 straits turnpike, watertown, CT 06795) for the recall. On the first dealer visit, the mechanic was unable to remove the upper bolt on the driver's side high back seat. On the second visit, the dealer was able to remove the upper bolt and installed a new bolt however, the contact believed that the dealer damaged the seat in the process of installing the new bolt. The contact stated that the seat no longer reclined and needed the middle row seats to keep it upright. On the third visit, the contact was informed that the seat needed to be replaced. 6 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2018 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/30/2018

I recently purchased a 2018 Ford Explorer on August 30 from hammonasset Ford in madison, CT. I paid several thousand dollars extra for a safety package which includes rear seat belt airbags. We were disappointed to discover an issue in the second row of seats that hinders us from using one of the seats because of the airbag configuration. the middle seat where there are seat belts for three only fits two people. the design of the seat belt latches is a flawed one. The seat belts overlap which is a safety concern not to mention a human body cannot fit in the space they allotted. this car is advertised for seven people but only can seat six. I have seven people in my family including a baby in a car seat and we all can't go in the car together at the same time because of it. I reached out to the dealership as soon as we got the car home and they told me to go to Ford. The person I talkled to told me no need to talk to the owner or bother her. they would not help me because they said it is a design issue not anything they can repair. I reached out to Ford who said the same thing. I continued to reach out to the dealership who had service reach out to Ford to see if they can change the seat belts in the car but due to safety issues they were told they cannot and again they said it is a design issue not a manufacturing issue therefore I should go to the bbb. in addition to hammonasset Ford, I also went to hoffman Ford in east hartford to show the sales manager the car. He was shocked about the design of this car. We looked at the same exact car without the safety package and the seat belts were not flawed. The sales manager at hoffman Ford said he cant help me because I didn't buy the car there but if Ford reached out to him he could help. I contacted the bbb but they declined my application due for the same reason saying it is not an manufacturing issue.

I have my air bag light on my dash, and my emergency lights do not work. This car is too young to have such problems. My passenger back seat belt case is broken as well. The stitching on the seat belt seem to be tearing. This is only a 2011 Ford Explorer it is way to young for all these major safety issues. My mechanic cant figure it out.

11 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

On 8/15/09, [xxx]was operating his 2002 Ford Explorer in houston, TX when the Explorer was struck from the rear by a pickup truck. During the collision, [xxx]seat back collapsed and, although he had been wearing his seat belt, he was ejected through broken-out rear window glazing. [xxx] sustained multiple blunt force injuries from which he died. The seat back in the 2002 Explorer is attached to a recliner mechanism on each side of the seat. The recliner mechanisms are attached to the seat cushion frame by spiral coil pins. When the Explorer was struck from the rear, the vehicle moved forward in relation to [xxx] body, causing his body to load the driver's seat back. As this occurred, the force of the seat back being moved rearward by [xxx] body caused the recliner mechanisms on both sides of the seats to move forward; as they did so, they contacted the spiral coil pins, and fractured those pins on both sides of the seat. When the spiral coil pins failed, the seat back collapsed onto the rear seat cushion, and [xxx] was ejected into the cargo area of the Explorer and then out of the rear window glazing. [xxx] suffered mutliple blunt force trauma injuries, which took his life. Upon investigation, including comparison of a number of other, exemplar driiver's seats from 2002 Explorers, it has become clear that the spiral coil pins are defectively installed in many Explorer seats. This manufacturing defect is manifested by the spiral coil pins being inserted through mating holes on the seat cushion frame to inconsistent depths, which can cause the pins not to seat properly in those holes. In the case of [xxx], because the spiral coil pins were not inserted far enough into the mating holes when manufactured, the pins on his seat were fractured by the recliner mechanisms and failed to hold his seat back upright in the collision. This failure mechanism in the pins allowed for [xxx]ejection. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

13 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 1996 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/02/2008

Drivers seatback failure. The drivers seat in our 1996 Ford Explorer collapsed. The upper portion of our seat suddenly flew backwards only stopping when it struck the rear seat. Luckily this failure occurred in our driveway. My wife was hurled backwards her feet flying upwards and striking the underside of the dashboard. Her hands came off the steering wheel and she was left prone staring at the ceiling of the vehicle. This should be a great concern to NHTSA since any driver experiencing such a failure while driving would be in grave danger. After removing the seat and researching issues with Explorer seats I found the 1998 Explorer recall that exactly described our seat failure. The same exact bolt in the 1998 recall was the cause of our seat collapse. I have said bolt ( broken in two pieces)and would greatly appreciate NHTSA examining it to determine whether the failure was due to bad bolts or if the seat design caused the bolt to fail. I have since replaced the bolt with a new bolt and steel spacer (I believe that was the remedy called for in the 1998 recall) if I had not removed the seat the whole process would have taken under 20 minutes and the parts can be had for under $2 . Please correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't your web seat say that if a safety related repair is necessary the manufacturer will have to pay for said repair. This repair clearly falls into that category. I would hope NHTSA shares my concern and does a through investigation. Thank you, greg campbell.

The front side of the mecanism is covered in plastic, but the back side is open. A vertcle piece of flat bar that is mounted stationary to the seat mecanism has a hole drilled through it and the moving part of the seat has another piece of flat bar mounted to it that slides past the stationary piece which has the hole in it when the seat leans forward for entry into the back seat. It's at just the right height for small children to reach when putting the seat up. Our daughter was using her right hand to release the seat latch and using her left hand to support herself when her index finger on her left hand went into the hole and when the seat released the flat bar attached to the seat slid past the hole, slicing her finger off.
