This was a terrible event. . . My car was aimed down my 300 ft driveway. I don't believe at that point or if it was stuck I didn't know the accelerator was stuck but I soon realized something was wrong. As I headed to new albany high school for water class the explorer went faster and faster on rt 161. . . The clutch would not allow a down shift at all after the first time or two. . . I may have blown it out. . . The SUV went faster and faster and in 3rd gear it was revving so hard. . . When I could I pulled into a parking lot and turned the engine off. . . I let it cool and attempted to start the explorer but it would have red warning lights when I started it in neutral as it revved so high. . . I pushed it into gear and when I got to the two red lights I turned the key off. . . Once I stopped in the intersection and about 8 cars were honking at me. I had to deal with five traffic intersections. When I got home I turned the key off and fought the wheel to get turned into the downswing of my driveway. . . I raced around my house to face out and turned off the key. . . The explorer was smoking and "laid rubber" and tore out grass in my house. . . It almost skidded into my pond. I think the clutch is burned out and the brake abs light was on as I had to brake all the way home. . . I tried to disengage the cruise control if that was it during my terror ride but it had no effect. . . The brakes could not stop the speeding vehicle, the gears were locked while the speed accelerated so there was no downshifting, the pedal was pushed to the floor and would not change speed when I pulled it up with my hand or toe of my shoe. . .

2001 Ford Explorer Sport spontaneously caught fire in engine compartment while parked in garage attached to my home. Vehicle was moved to driveway and fire extinguished. Ford dealer admitted to recall of defective cruise control switch which was the origination point of fire. Was advised to file claim with my auto insurance company to speed up repairs and ensure that claim was subrogation to Ford for reimbursement. Vehicle repaired, now Ford will not take claim without proof of cause of fire. This would require my insurance company to hire an engineer. Not cost effective for insurance company, not to mention the fact that the vehicle was repaired over 3 months ago. I am out my deductible and my insurance company is out the remainder of the repairs, even though Ford knows this was a faulty part.
Defect with the cruise control. My cruise control was DE-activated on 9/13/07, and my dealership reports they are still waiting for the repair part from Ford. I would like to have my cruise control repaired immediately - I have been driving for 4 months without cruise control.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport. The contact called two dealers to schedule a repair appointment regarding NHTSA campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control). Both dealers failed to provide him with the option to bring the vehicle in and have the cruise control switch deactivated. They also stated that the parts would be unavailable until December of 2007. There had been no failure to date. The purchase date was unavailable. The current mileage was 40,000.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport. The contact received a safety recall notice for the vehicle speed control: cruise control in August of 2007. He called Ford several times since receiving the notice. The cruise control was disconnected in October of 2007. As of April 18, 2008, the part is still unavailable. There had been no failure to date. The recall number and purchase date were unknown. The current mileage was 72,000. Updated 05/07/08.

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport. The contact received a recall notice for the vehicle speed control. Even though the repair parts will be unavailable until late October, she stated that the dealer refused to disconnect the cruise control feature. The dealer stated that the notice does not state that the cruise control must be disengaged. There had been no failure to date. The NHTSA recall number was unavailable. The current mileage was 164,381. Updated 01/07/08. Updated 12/12/07.
While trying to use the cruise control it will sometimes work and other times will not work. When it doesn't work the green indicator light just flashes when pushing the set button. Also the area around the buttons gets very warm. It seems that it works less in warm weather then in cool. Updated 11/07/07.

My car break lights were not working. I just so happenned to tell my uncle and he got worried since I have a 1 year old. We went to a car shop to go fix it. They told me it was simply the break fuse. When they went to replace the fuse, the car started smoking to the point where I could not even see. I thought the car was going to explode so I took my son and started running. Everyone in the parking lot started running also. They lifted the hood, and noticed that the brake cut off switch for cruise control was burning and he put it out. This has been a huge recall for many other years for Ford, but not for mine. Now Ford wants to charge me because my vehicles year is not included in the recall. This is a manufacturer error and it is wrong for me to have to pay for this myself. If my son and I would have died, Ford would be looking at a major lawsuit. I am willing to take this as far as I have to because I honestly believe Ford is trying to get away with this. This was a very frightening incidence.
I was driving down the highway when I noticed a loss of power and the check engine light started flashing and the entire vehicle started shaking. I pulled over and exited the vehicle. I called the repair shop and they came and towed it back to their shop. The repair man told me that a fire started under the hood. It required extensive repair. Upon further examination he told me that he believed it started with the speed control deactivation switch. I was talking to my boss about a week after that and he informed me that the 1998 explorers had a recall for that exact problem. I feel that you should investigate the 1999 Explorer Sports for the same thing.
I arrived back from taking my son to the park at approximately 6:00pm, watched tv and then fired up the grill around 7:45pm. I came back in the house and heard a loud noise. I yelled upstairs to my husband and asked if he had heard the noise, he yelled back and said, call 911 your truck is on fire. He immediately began to fight the fire with two fire extinguishers and the water hose. We were scared as the fire department had not yet arrived and we were worried it was going to blow up as it was only approximately 7 feet from the house. The fire department showed us the area in which the fire started which was under the hood on the driver's side, however, deemed it indeterminable. I was in shock that this occurred as I only had one payment left to payoff the loan. I researched and found out that the same vehicles that were being recalled by Ford for a faulty cruise control switch was also used on my 1998, however, had not been recalled. After much research, I have found there are several other vehicles that are the same year as mine were catching on fire for no apparent reason without warning. There have been recalls, however, not on my particular vehicle. Ford sent me a form letter that was addressed to my husband with our address, however, the letter states dear ms. X. (a true indication of their concern for my issue) I am angered that there have been so many vehicles that have burst into flames without warning, burned down cars and homes and lives lost and Ford believes they have no responsibility. Could they have not issued a consumer alert for all vehicles and at least afforded the consumer the opportunity to make a decision to pay $20 to replace this part? I will be paying to have a thorough investigation done to prove to Ford that they are in fact responsible and will take this as far as I have to. Someone needs to investigate the number of complaints and do something to inform the public of this hazard and potentially save someone's life.

2001 Ford explorer caught on fire in the engine compartment. While driving car sounded like it was missing. The consumer saw smoke, pulled over and realized that eh vehicel was on fire. The cruise control box, located on the right side, was the cause of the fire.
On easter Sunday March 27 2005, my family (3 young boys and my wife) left my moms house at about 10:20 am to head to church, my wife was driving, and as we got out onto the main highway road route 360 hull st. My wife set on the cruise control and about 60. Speed limit is 55 after about 20 seconds she needed to take off the cruise due to another car upcoming, when she went to get off the cruise it would not come out of cruise control and the speed went back up to like 80. . . At this point my wife and I tried to press on brakes, and press the off buttons, and nothing. . . . We could not stop!!!! I finally told my wife to put both off her feet as hard as they could on the brakes. . . . The car finally got down to about 30 and we got over on the shoulder, and I quickly jerked it into neutral, and we stopped. . . . As I got out, the freakin tires were on fire!!!!! seriously flames were coming out of the brakes and tires. . . . Oh did I mention we had 3 young children in the vehicle. . . . . Come to find out the cruise switch got stuck. . . . Thank the good lord jesus we were on a stretch of road with no stop lights or heavy traffic. . . . 2000 Ford Explorer Sport Ford sucks!!!! could have killed myself and my whole family.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport. Over the last couple of years he has been having problems with cruise control. And if the truck were just idling ,and if consumer did not have foot on the brake the vehicle would rev up all the way for about 10-15 seconds. If he did not have foot on the brake he could have hit someone. Dealership stated that unless they could duplicate the problem they could not find the source of the problem. According to the report it sounded like the problem was cruise control .
On engine caught fire & car was deemed totaled. By the fire investigators it was confirmed to be an electrical fire, faulty deactivation switch.
On 2/14/03, I woke up screaming that I smell smoke. My fiance jumped up, and we screamed for everyone to get out- because the house was on fire. The house burned down with me breaking both ankles and my 2 oldest children dying. For two years I never knew what happened. The cause was left undetermined. There were so many holes into what happened that night. Everything was investigated, even the stove. Nothing leads to the fire, except for the 1999 Ford explore truck that was parked in the garage. No one inspected the truck because they knew nothing about the cruise control switch recall. I feel that had we known about the Ford cruise control switch, we wouldn't have parked the car in the garage. These vehicles need to be thoroughly looked into, because the place of origin was in the area of the garage.
About three years ago my garage burned to the ground. A police investigation found a hot spot where my 2000 explorer was parked but had no reasonable cause for the fire. The same cruise control switch on on other models has been recalled but for some reason I didn`t get one for this vehicle. I can find out the exact dates but at this time the dates are estimated.
2002 Ford explorer with a recall for the cruise control. Customer states he has tried twice to get the problem fixed. He says the dealer told him they were out of parts and were not getting any in until mid-December.
