After talking to several people, and doing some research on the internet, it seems as though a common problem is with the rear windshield wiper motor. On more than one ocassion, the motors stopped working, work incorrectly, or work one minute and fail to function the next. This leads to the lack of visibility towards the rear of the vehicle, which could cause some safety concerns.

2 Windshield Wiper/washer Motor problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer Sport

Failure Date: 10/16/1998

Rear wiper motor has been replaced twice by dealer under warranty. This is known faulty design. Wiper jams and has to be physically rocked to unjam. Problem is you could be driving in rainstorm & could not use wiper at that critical time. This vehicle is past warranty now.
