11 problems related to spare tire have been reported for the 1997 Ford F-150. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 1997 Ford F-150. The spare tire carrier detached from the end of the spare tire retainer. The contact was traveling 35 mph ,and stated that the vehicle did not hit any bumps. The current and failure mileages were 81,000. The consumer states that the retainer was at the end of the cable assembly used to lower and raise the spare tire. The consumer also states that the tire bounced 6ft in the air and almost hit the card behind him. Update 05/04/tr.
Cable of spare tire carrier broke, causing spare tire & support bracket to fall onto roadway.

Tire developed a 3in. X2in. X1/2in. Bulge. Tire was swapped with spare. Since then the tread has had complete failure with a separation of approx. 3 feet around the circumference of the tire. All of this occured while being in the spare tire position. (dot number: w208 tiresize: p235/70r16).
While driving on interstate 10 the cap of the tire peeled off. This was a spare tire that was in use. I don't know the exact mileage on the tire but I assume with low mileage. Emergency spare tire has never been used. Had taken vehicle to wal mart to have tires rotated. Mechanic could not use spare tire due to damage from storage of cross board supports. Tire had severe indentations. Good year ps235/704x16 sl bsw.
Grooves worn into spare tire sidewall due to rubbing agains frame beneath truck bed. Tire has never been used and now may be unsafe since the grooves are 15-20% into the sidewall. Ford dealer referred me to the manufacturer who denied any problem.

Spare on the truck is 16' and the truck comes with 17' tires from the factory. Spare tire is too small for 4 wheel drive.
The spare tire that is mounted on vehicle is rubbing against the frame or body of vehicle, causing the tire to be worn in 8 different places. Consumer noticed this while changing a flat, the rubber tread had worn down to the plastic. Please provide any further information.
