77 problems related to wheel bolts have been reported for the 1997 Ford F-150. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Lugs:nuts came loose on back rear tire. . . . . . . . . Hub came loose and ruined the wheel pulled in driveway and hub was just hanging there with the loosened lugnuts. Had a recall on this problem years ago and had it supposedly fixed. . . . Took to Ford dealer and was charges $500. 00.
While tightening by hand, the lugs: nuts on the front driver and passenger wheels broke off at the studs.
My right side wheel/the lug/nuts are rusted off and the lug cap completely melted off from where the exhaust comes out from in front of the wheel. The lugs will not tighten on the wheel. I purchased the F-150 truck used and never was notified of a recall on the lug/nuts. The owner before me purchased the truck from john megal dealership in dahlonega georgia.
While driving heard a popping noise. Then, upon stopping found out that two lugs: nutshad snapped off left rear tire. Manufacturer had been contacted.
While driving at 55 mph left rear lugs: nuts came off, causing wheel to come completely off vehicle. Also, recall 98v09500/ manufacturer's recall 98s14 work was corrected, lugs: nuts were replaced. However, problem still occurred. The consumer was not sure if the lug nuts came off. The tire and rim were never found.
While driving rear left wheel separated from vehicle due to lugs: nuts:bolt s shearing off. This caused severe damage to vehicle. A recall has been issued on vehicle's make/model for the lugs: nuts: bolts . However, owner of this vehicle has not received a recall notification. Manufacturer will be notified.
The vehicle had the recall (98v-095) completed on the wheel lug nuts and bolts, however the vehicle experienced two failures of the lug nuts which sheared off causing the wheels to fall off, first incident was on 4-24-00 and the second on 11-08-00.
Recall was remedied for this vehicle. However, studs still broke in rear axle which may cause a crash. This is a very common problem even after remdy of recall. Ford is not willing to assist consumer. The consumer replaced all studs on both axles. Dealer was unwilling to replace them, as thier docmentation showed that the lug nut recall was performed.
The right front tire fell off of vehicle, causing loss of control and collision with parked vehicle's.
While driving about 25 mph, the left rear wheel fell off. Manufacturer was contacted about the problem. Consumer was informed that recall work was performed on the truck in September of 1998. Also, manufacturer stated that the warranty on the recall expired. Recall # 98v095000 Ford/lugs: nuts.
The right wheel separated due to all the lugs breaking, the wheel fell off in traffic at a low speed, consumer was told by previous owner that the recall 98v-095 was completed prior to this incident. Nlm.
While changing a right rear tire, and when driver was tightening the bolts to specified torque, he broke two screws.
Vehicle was repaired under recall for the wheel lugs: nuts and bolts on 11-11-98. On 5-6-99, the left rear tire separated form the vehicle. The owner contacted the dealership. The dealership declined to repair vehicle because the consumer had the tires rotated. The manufacturer has been notified.
Had received recall notice 98v095000 & contacted dealership. Took vehicle to dealer & had lugs: nuts replaced. During the replacement, the "o" rings were removed. They should not be removed.
Consumer has received trw recalls from the manufacturer . He has contacted the dealer and the parts are not available. Ak.
Had received recall notice in the mail, recall 98v095000. Dealer has informed owner that parts are not available & does not know when they would be coming in. Will call when they have arrived.
The consumer was involved in an accident due to the failure of the lugs: nuts. While driving lugs: nuts came off the wheels, vehicle lost control, resulting in a collision in which the son of the consumer was killed. The manufacturer has been contacted in accordance with recall number 98v095000. Lug nuts.

Consumer experiencing problem with dealer honoring mfr. Recall notice sent 15-Sep-98. Consumer continually being informed that the parts are not available or they ran out of parts, and to call back next Friday. Still no parts.

Consumer contacted the dealer in reference to NHTSA recall 98v095000, manufacturer's recall98s14; dealer refused to replace the lugs:nuts due to the consumer purchasing new tires at a tire shop. Tire shop replaced tires, and tires separated from the vehicle. Dealer stated the tire shop did not tighten the lugs: nuts, and refused to replace them.
Lugs: nuts on wheels would break off whenever tires have to be aligned or brakes repaired. Mechanic says happens every time on f150.
Recall 98v095000 and manufacturer's recall98s14, lugs:nuts:bolts; recall notice was received in July, and the dealer was contacted. Parts were not available then. The dealer has been contacted numerous times. Appointments set up because they thought the parts were in. The dealer cannot remedy the problem because they still have no parts.

Mfr. Recall notice 98s-14, concerning lug nuts. Had stated second notice will be received around third quarter of this year, and still nothing has been received at this time. But learned from dealer in consumer's location, that the lugs: nuts are in. Consumer would like to know why is the manufacturer not honoring the recall as stated in recall notice. Could your agency help with this problem?.

Consumer experiencing ongoing problem with dealer not honoring mfr. Recall notice concerning lugs: nuts, may not create sufficient clamp load, allowing wheel movement in relation to mounting surface/ potential wheel separation.
Consumer received a recall letter from Ford dealer, saying to bring in vehicle in for parts to be replaced recall #98s14. When consumer took the vehicle in the parts were not avalible.
Faulty manufacturing of wheels caused four lug nut on one of the front wheels to shear off, rendering the vehicle undrivable.
