2 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2005

Complaint received via e-mail. I own a 1999 f150 Ford. The mirrors on the doors are defective. The finish has almost all come off. It is very difficult to view out of the side mirrors. They have the signal flashers r and l in the mirrors. I have gone to the dealer, [located in thomson, GA], and asked them to replace the mirrors. They said they would not replace the mirrors, and they were not covered under the extended warranty. The service department acknowledged to me that the mirrors were defective, but said I would have to pay to have them fixed on my own at a non Ford glass repair shop. They estimated the cost to be $500. 00-$600. 00. I had another person check at a dealer in columbia, south carolina. They said the power operating part of the side mirrors were covered under warranty, but not the glass.

3 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2004

Both exterior rearview mirrors on my 1999 F-150 lariet model have experienced black spots. The black spots make it impossible to see anything behind me. I have done research and found that delamination of mirrors occured on 1998 and 1999 F-150, f-250, expeditions, and Lincoln navigator vehicles. I have had the mirrors replaced at a cost of $150. 00 per mirror plus labor. I contacted Ford to ask about reimbursement for the costs of replacing the mirrors and was told that since the vehicle is not under warranty that they can't do anything. Ford has been very unresponsive to this issue. It appears unless a vehicle recall is required that they will not voluntarily replace the mirrors. I was told by the parts manager that the replacement mirrors have a different design than the original mirrors. I can only assume that the mirrors were redesigned after Ford realized that there was a defect.

4 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2004

On my 1999 Ford F-150 pickup (33,000 miles), both the exterior mirrors have lost reflection and turned black. Have checked repeatedly for recall since purchase, but none issued by Ford. I have compensated by putting small adhesive wide-angle mirror on. However, another driver tried to use mirror and was unable to see a small child at right rear fender.

7 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2003

I have a 1999 f150 lariat, 40,000 miles, bought new, with electronic side mirrors with built in arrow lights. The silver backing on both the left and right mirrors has deteriorated causing the mirrors to become opaque. This is becoming a safety hazard, especially in low light conditions.

8 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2002

Side mirrors with turn signals built into mirrors have turned black and spotty. This problem appears to only exist on the mirrors with the turn signals built into the mirror, and Ford no longer sells these vehicles in the f150 this way.

Exterior rearview mirrors on my 1999 F-150 lariat purchased new have effectively completely deteriorated to the point that they are not functional. It is apparent that this is a manufacture defect based on my and the many other complaints.

13 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2000

Mirrors on both side doors are DE laminating the reflectant on the back of the mirrors. This at first looks like paint oversparay, but continues untill you can not see out of the mirrors. They are simply black. They are the Ford signal mirrors with turn signals built in. I was told by the parts department that this was not a defect coverd by warrenty. He also indicated that other people were having the same problem. I have never, ever seen a mirror do this. The mirrors are a definate safety issue and need to be replaced.

14 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2000

1999 Ford F-150 exterior rearview mirrors are extremely faded so they are basically useless. These are the mirrors with turn signals inside the glass. Ford says there are no recalls and no problem exists. They are a safety hazard.

15 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

Failure Date: 01/01/1901

The reflective material on the exterior rear view mirrors peeled off making the mirrors useless in the consumer 1999 Ford f150. The reflective material started discoloring and peeling 7 months after the vehicle was purchased.

16 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

This vehicle equipped with outside "signal" mirrors (red leds behind glass). The right side mirror has suffered a significant loss of reflectant material from the surface, reducing visibility to about 40% of original (satisfactory only in bright daylight). The left side mirror has begun to lose reflectant (currently about 10%). This was pointed out to the shop foreman at the dealer, but since the vehicle is out of warranty, he offfered no solution. Replacement would cost several hundreds of $ at Ford prices, difficult to find non-oem replacements. Shop foremena mentioned that he had heard of or seen this s few tiomes in past. I have owned numerous vehicles including several Ford and have never had this type of problem. I thought that it was a freak occurrence until the right side mirror began to fail. I believe that tis should be considered a safety defect and that Ford should have to replace these defective parts. Except for mileage, my vehicle would still be within the warranty period of 36 months. Thank you.

17 Exterior Rearview Mirror problem

Exterior rear view mirrors are eroding. Driver can see clear through mirror as if it were a window. This proposes a safety concern, driver is not able to see oncoming vehicles. Dealer has been contacted.
