Pulling into a parking space, I heard a loud bang and a dragging sound. I got out of my vehicle to see what I had backed into, but couldn't seen anything. I went to get back into my vehicle and heard someone say, "something is hanging under your truck". When I got out and looked, I saw the gas tank laying on the ground. Upon inspection, both straps had broken and the fuel lines were the only thing holding it to the truck. This occured only once so far. The truck is a 2000 f150 with 150,000 miles on it. I replaced the two straps after purchasing them from a dealer. I was shocked to see that a 24 gallon tank was held up by two small metal straps attached to the frame by a bolt on one side, and a twist lock (if you can call it that) on the other. I hope Ford has found a better way to attach these on their newer vehicles, especially 4-wheel drive.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 15 mph, the contact heard a loud noise when he noticed that the fuel tank had separated from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where they reinstalled the detached fuel tank and replaced the hose and filler tube. The dealer advised the contact to bring the vehicle in for inspection. The manufacturer was not advised of the failure. The current mileage was 175,000. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. The VIN was unavailable.
While driving on a smooth paved road the straps which attach the fuel tank to the vehicle failed, causing the tank to fall to the road. The tank was still attached to the vehicle by the fuel inlet line, causing the tank to be drug for approximately 50 ft before the vehicle was stopped.
The consumer stated while traveling at 5 mph in 2000 Ford f150 the gas tank fell off the truck. The whole gas tank, lines and sensor fell right off the truck. The truck has been taken to a dealership for repairs. The consumer called Ford, and Ford stated, that they could not help out. The consumer said that everything was fine with the truck before this. The tank was completely full of fuel at the time.
