1 Engine problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2011

Turned over my 2002 Ford F-150. A loud pop occurred as a spark plug/coil pack blew out. This is the 3rd coil pack that has blown since April of 2009. They fix it every time by having to replace the coil pack and spark plug, along with having to re-tap the head. Luckily, this time, I was in a grocery store parking lot. The last two times, my wife and I were driving the truck when it happened, which placed us in danger because it could have caused an explosion. I know there are quite a few other people saying the same things about that happening to them multiple times. I think it's time that Ford pushes a recall through dealing with the coil packs, as more and more people are affected by the same issue, before someone is seriously hurt as a result.

2 Engine problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

2002 Ford F-150 with a 5. 4l triton v8. The #7 spark plug blew out of the port and broke the coil. That left fuel vapors from the piston to be exposed to the damaged ignition coil that was arcing and could of caught fire with my kids in the truck. If you look online there are thousands of complaints from f150 owners. This needs to be addressed and a recall from Ford needs to be issued.

3 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2011

I have a Ford F-150 that has a triton v-8 motor. It has 110'000 miles. I have had the truck for 3 years and purchased it with a 5 year loan agreement. I was driving and the spark plug blewout of the motor. Apparently this is a common problem,so common that they have a kit thats a qwik fix. Evidently a previous owner had this problem and put the kit on there got rid of the car and it was sold to me by town Toyota in roxbury, new jersey. It blows my mind that I bought it with 65,000 miles and it alredy had a major problem not only once with a previous owner but also happened to me. Now the only fix is to replace the head of the motor or even replacing the entire motor. I have come into hard times with being laid off from work and having no means to pay for it or even getting anywhere to find work. I am getting price quotes ranging from 3000 to 8000 dollars. Its unbelievable to me theres no recall or compensation. Im stuck with a vehicle that I not only have to pay for but cant even drive. Something needs to be done. My e-mail is wmickulas@optimum. Net.

4 Engine problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2010

My 2002 Ford f150 with a 5. 4 l triton v8 engine spit out a spark plug for no apparent reason. My f150 has 117,000 miles on it and has had no mechanical problems over it's life. It is serviced regularly and is used for routine driving. I happened to be 30 miles from home when I heard a loud tapping coming from the engine compartment. Knowing a little about engines I checked to see what had happened and noticed that the spark plug had been pushed out of the cylinder head, causing the compression to cause it and the coil pack to continually strike the fuel rail. Fortunately I knew a mechanic in the area 1/4 mile from my location and slowly drove to his shop. He said that it was a common problem with Ford 4. 6, 5. 4 and 6. 8 triton engines. He added that the aluminum used for the heads was too soft causing the spark plugs to spit out. There was no way of preventing this from happening or predicting when it would happen. The hole for this spark plug had all the treads blown out when the plug came out so I had to leave my truck at the garage for repair. The repair consisted of having to put a steel threaded insert into the head in order to secure the new spark plug / coil pack. The mechanic stated that I should definitely not drive it since it could cause a fire. I could smell the gas fumes from the engine compartment and fully believe this to be a good possibility. I can only imagine if someone was unfamiliar with engines and continued to drive with this condition with the possible result of a fire in the vehicle while their family is aboard. I think Ford needs to do a recall on these engines to have them repaired in a safe fashion to prevent a tragedy of a fire while in operation. Upon a google search of this topic it looks as though there are a multitude of the same type of incidents with these engines. Thank you for your consideration.

5 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2010

Events leading up to the failure would have to be. . . Everyday driving. . . . The failure - for the third time now, a spark plug ejected from the cylinder head. Consequences - $800 Ford dealership parts/labor, plus 2 tow truck services. New plug, insert, and coil.

6 Engine problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Ford F-150. While traveling at 25 mph, there was an unusual pop from the front end of the vehicle. Immediately, there was an abnormal air pressure release sound. The dealer advised that the engine head would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. There were no prior warnings of the failure. The current and failure mileages were 106,000.

7 Engine problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2010

2002 F-150 history - have had to replace 4 coils. 2 were burned out and 2 were damaged from the spark plug blowing out the hole, this last time just recently (June 2010).

8 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2010

Ford triton v8-4. 6l spark plug ejection on #2 plug. This has now happened to me as I was driving at 60mph and it blew it out and the coil spring is now down on top of the piston and smashed within seconds. Towed to Ford dealership and mechanic admitted this was common but no recalls. He scoped the cylinder with bore scope to find the coil spring smashed so bad it could not be retrieved. Estimated cost is $3500. 00 plus remove head and clean out. Can I claim this back to Ford?.

9 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

Spark plug ejected from engine.

10 Engine problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2009

I have a 2002 Ford f150 supercrew harley davidson edition with a triton 5. 4 l engine. I placed the truck in drive and heard a pop and then a continued rhythmic popping. I opened the hood and could tell air was coming from the #4 cylinder. I turned off the engine and investigated further. The spark plug had blown completely out of the head and broke the ignition coil attached to the spark plug wire. So far this is the only incident for me but after researching online, for possible repairs solutions, I found that this is way too common of a problem with these Ford engines. I am only glad it happened while I was pulling out of my garage. If that had happened at speed on the highway with the engine temperature up there could have been a serious situation. After reading all the problems so many others have had, I am afraid of when this could happen again!.

11 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2009

The contact owns a 2002 Ford F-150. The contact stated that he was alerted by the fire department that his vehicle was on fire. As a result the vehicle was completely destroyed. The vehicle has not been inspected by a technician. The current and failure mileages were 140000.

12 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2009

The spark plugs are being blown out of cylinder heads on all size triton engines. This occurred on my 2002 Ford f150, and on my father in-laws expedition. This was on a triton v-8 and v-10s. When I took it to the dealership in ft wayne indiana they informed me that this is common on these engines I also spoke with Ford customer care and they claim that this is common. They wont recall it because they claim that this is not a safety issue. I feel that this is a safety issue because it does not shut off the fuel supply to that cylinder. Not to mention it just happens with out any sort of warning luckily I was able to limp my truck to the closest Ford dealership in my area. With my father in -laws expedition he was just outside of town on his way to arkansas when his blew out. The only remedy is a healy coil or replace the head, thankfully the coil is reasonable in cost but wont last forever.

13 Engine problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2009

There was no events leading up to our problem with our pick up truck. I started the truck and heard a loud bang and then the truck sounded like it was missing. We found out that the 3rd spark plug on the passenger side of the motor blew out. It hasn't been fixed yet it happened yesterday 8/17/09.

14 Engine problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2009

My 2002 Ford f150 truck, with the 5. 4 liter engine, has had 2 failures on 2 different occasions in the space of 8 months. Each time I was just driving down the highway and a spark plug was blown out of the head, along with the coil. (plug #3 the first time and #7 the last time. ) this failure caused an immediate loss of power. Luckily the traffic was light each time, being late at night, so I was able to pull safely to the side of the road to determine the problem, whereas if the traffic had been heavy, it could have caused a major accident because of the immediate power loss to the engine, and/or a fire due to it proximity to the injectors. The defects were repaired at the local Ford dealership where the truck was purchased using a threaded insert into the old head and a new coil. Total cost for both repairs was approximately $600, at my expense. I have emailed Ford motor company and they responded saying that because the vehicle was out of warranty and there were no recalls or customer satisfaction programs it would not be fixed by Ford. I purchased this vehicle new and it has been meticulously maintained. I have searched the internet and have found that there are thousands of these engines with this problem. It is obvious Ford knows of this defect in the heads and refuses to deal with it. If not by recall, it is obviously a factory defect and should be dealt with by Ford as the incidents occur. This is a dangerous situation that should be looked into because of the immediate loss of engine power and possibility of fire.

15 Engine problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2009

Fordf150 2002 model was driving down hwy 11w approximately 45 mile an hour and heard loud bang the #5 spark plug had blown out of engine spitting fuel the engine is 5. 4 trition v8 it broke the coil pack and busted the fuel rail on pick up truck is the a recall ? or needs to be recalled any suggestions as to how to fix this issue?.

16 Engine problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2009

I own a2002 Ford f150. It has about 80,000 miles and it blew a spark plug out of the engine.

17 Engine problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2009

While driving at 45 mph on level surface the #5 spark plug was ejected from it's hole damaging the coil over plug causing arcing from the coil to the engine. The vehicle immediately slowed dramatically and the smell of gasoline was apparent. Luckily there was very light traffic and I was able to pull to the side of the road and shutdown the engine. I identified the problem and having some mechanical training knew enough to disconnect the fuel injector wire for the #5 cylinder. This was the only way I could safely move the vehicle. Had I not known what to do, an engine compartment explosion would have easily resulted.

18 Engine problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2009

My 2002 f150 recently spit out a spark plug, stripping the threads of the aluminum cylinder head. The service shop where I took it told me that it's been a major problem with Ford trucks for some time, and refused to fix it.

19 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2008

2002 Ford f150 5. 4 liter engine. Traveling at approx 25 mph I heard a loud pop from the engine compartment and something hitting the hood. The car started to run rough and gasoline fumes started to fill the passenger compartment. I took the truck to a repair garage who indicated that a spark plug had blown from the head. I was told this is a common Ford problem by the garage and subsequent research on the internet has verified this. The head was remilled and the plug and coil had to be replaced. Ford does acknowledge an issue and has issued a TSB however warranties do not cover repair. With the plug blown out of the head gas vapors were being injected into the engine compartment and the risk of fire is present.

20 Engine problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2008

Driving to pick up my son at school for a trip. As I turned left across traffic I heard a loud pop in my 2002 Ford f150 and then a loud series of loud pops as my engine continued to run. I pulled to the side of the road and immediately noticed a strong smell of gasoline. I moved the vehicle to a parts store just up the street and was told that my triton v-8 engine had just ejected a spark plug out of the head. I had the vehicle towed to a mechanic who then charged me a great deal to repair the head and replace the spark plug.

21 Engine problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

My 2002 Ford F-150 with a 4. 6 liter v8 blew out a spark plug while accelerating on a highway entrance ramp. The sparkplug that blew out was the 3rd from the front on the passenger side. The threads for the spark plug in that cylinder are now ruined as well as the coil for that plug. To repair this problem I will probably end up buying a $250 kit to re-tap the head.

22 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2008

I have a 5. 4l engine in my Ford truck and it keeps stripping out spark plugs. I am not the only one with this problem. There are hundreds if not thousands of people that have posted the same problem on consumer affairs report . Com. One guys truck burnt to the ground in 12 minutes and couldn't even get his navigation system out of his vehicle. Flames were shooting out of the dash towards him. I have contacted Ford with the matter and they state that it is not a safety issue and you are the ones that have to recall it. I would say that if your vehicle can burn to the ground in a matter of minutes, it is a safety problem. They know about this problem and it keeps happening to people all over and they are not doing anything about it. A recall needs to be called on these engines before someone gets killed or hurt in an accident due to the vehicle breaking down in the middle of a highway. It needs to be taken care of before someone gets killed, not after.

23 Engine problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2008

While being 250 miles away from home, the spark plug blew out of the engine of my 2002 F-150 truck. I was able to buy tools and perform a temporary repair in order to get my truck home. I then hired a mechanic to repair the engine using a heli-coil. Unfortunately I don't trust the truck now as I bought it to pull my camper and am concerned over being stranded. I was told by my mechanic that it is a common problem with the 5. 4 triton engine. I am not sure why Ford has not performed a recall on it.

24 Engine problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Ford F-150. While driving 65 mph on the highway, the spark plugs stripped out of the engine block. There were no prior warnings. The contact did not take the vehicle to the dealer for repair. Instead, he simply noticed the spark plug sticking out from the top of the hood. The vehicle is able to be driven, but it rides very roughly. The failure mileage was 148,000.

25 Engine problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2008

I was driving along mn7 on my way home. I stopped at a 4 way stop. When it was my turn to go, I started to accelerate and then my #5 spark plug blew out of the cylinder head. This has happened before. One may 4th 2008, #3 and #4 blew out and it cost me $2,000 to fix this. After doing some searching on the internet, it appears that a lots of Ford f150 owners are having this problem and Ford will do nothing to fix it.

26 Engine problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2008

Normal driving conditions on the freeway - spark plug discharged out of the motor. Vehicle towed to nearest auto repair shop. To repair, the hole for the spark plug in the aluminum head was rethreaded using a standard helicoil kit. Two spark plug holes have been replaced at a cost of $1100 per hole for parts and labor.

27 Engine problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

The # 3 spark plug shot out of the my Ford f150 5. 4 v8 triton engine. There are not enough threads to hold this in correctly. This needs to be recalled by Ford.

28 Engine problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2007

2002 Ford F-150 5. 4l v-8 engine has a blown spark plug, Ford refuses to accept responsibility for the head failure. They make a kit from a 1987 or so escort that had the same problem and they fixed those vehicles.

29 Engine problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Ford f150. The contact stated that the spark plug injection on the number three cylinder is defective. The vehicle began spilling raw fuel into the engine compartment. He has taken his vehicle to the dealer and they stated that this is something that just happens and the vehicle is not covered under warranty. Currently, the vehicle is at the dealer, where it has been for eleven days. The current and failure mileages were 104,000. The consumer provided for repairs and a letter from Ford motor company referencing the defect. Updated 08/07/07.

30 Engine problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2007

In the middle of July of 07, my wife, granddaughter and I were coming home from vacation in idaho, by york, ne. The truck was all of a sudden running rough. I was unable to find a mechanic to let me know what was wrong. I had to drive the vehicle home. I called my son in idaho, who is a mechanic and he listened to the vehicle over the phone. He told me that it sounded like a spark plug had blown out. I looked and saw the plug on top of the engine. I called around and found out it was going to cost over 2000. 00 for the job. Then I found out that Ford had made a kit for it. In over 40 years of driving I have never heard of such a thing. If Ford made a kit for it, then it seems to me that they should either fix the problem or inform customers about it.

31 Engine problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Ford F-150 harley davidson edition. The contact stated that the spark plugs have been backing out. As a result, the failure has blown the coil and damaged the head, which needs to be replaced. The dealer has witnessed this failure before, but cannot offer an explanation. According to a site that the contact visited, this has been a failure with the supercharged vehicles. He has notified Ford, but they have not yet responded. The engine size was unknown. The current mileage is 50,000 and failure mileage was 49,885. Updated 06/08/07.

32 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2007

I have a 2002 Ford F-150 with 65,000 miles on it. It is the 4. 2 liter v-6 that has always been taken care of. The motor threw a rod and needed to be replaced and stopped with a loud banging and the cost was 5,000 for a new long block by local Ford dealership. I have looked on the internet and seen hundreds of folks having to have their same v-6 engine go out prematurely. From 40,000 to 100,000 miles. The plastic intake gaskets are faulty and it gets coolant on the spark plug in cylinder and motor goes out by throwing a rod. Ford does not accept any responsibility for this lemon engine that seems to have many design flaws starting from 1997 when they started putting it in their vehicles. Updated 09/19/07.

33 Engine problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2006

Ford F-150 blew out a spark plug from the head, this is a known problem and has happened to thousands of people and Ford refuses to do anything about it. Average cost of repair to the customer is 3500.

34 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2006

My 2002 Ford f150 svt lightning ejected the very back passenger side spark plug. I was idling at a red light, a loud pop, and somehow drove the truck to the nearest Ford dealer. (joe sartain Ford, decatur, al).

35 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2006

On two occasions within the last year, my Ford F-150 with a triton 4. 6 liter v8 engine has "blown a spark plug" causing a substantial loss financially and transportation wise. I came to find out that this is a prevalent issue with Ford F-150 triton engines and I ask that a formal investigation, recall and, if possible, compensation be awarded to me and others having suffered the same fate. The most recent case occurred on Saturday night April 1, 2006 when returning from a family wedding.
