Tl the contact owns a 2005 Ford F-150. While driving various speeds, the vehicle suddenly shut off. The vehicle was examined by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel pump drive module was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The local dealer was not notified. The failure mileage was 135,000.
I attempted to start my truck, it turned over but would not start. I had the truck towed to the local Ford dealership where I purchased it new, and found the cause of the no start condition to be the fuel pump driver module. (part number 5l3a-9d370-aa) I asked to have the part saved for my inspection. What I found was very disturbing. The aluminum case of the module was cracked in half and has a dime size hole eroded thru. By chance, one of my work associated who has a 2004 f150 had a flat tire this morning (just three days after my experience with this problem) and had the spare tire down. I looked underneath his truck and found his truck to have a module in as poor condition as the one I had replaced. I took a picture that I would be happy to forward. Two additional work associates with 2004 - 2005 f150's have experienced this same problem with their trucks, I have also read several online posts today of this very same problem. This is not an issue of normal wear of a part, this is a definite design flaw and safety issue. The module in question is mounted above the spare tire on the drivers side rear axle. The tire is mounted for storage to the underside of the truck. The aluminum cover of the module is mounted against the steel axle and seems to act like a sacrificial anode as the module cover erodes and cracks to the point of near total destruction exposing a circuit board to the elements. It would seem this module would be placed in an area that would be less likely to destroyed by the elements or incapsulated or coated in a way that protect it. Any vehicle that can become subject to stall from a failed part is a safety concern and on this scale should be cause for recall consideration. The cost for this repair "parts and labor" at a dealership is approximately $400. 00.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to restart after being shut off. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact repaired the fuel pump drive module. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 123,000.
Ford fuel pump driver corrodes badly causing no start and/or total failure of engine power. Reduction of power or engine stalling can and will happen at highway speeds. When engine stalls driver can lose power steering power breaks and control vehicle. This is known by Ford. Ford along with a aftermaket company has redesinged the part. The updated part has standoffs along with a protective coating peventing corrsion. The corrsion of the part happens faster in the salt belt states. I replaced mine and the part had a hole in it letting water and parts of metal inside unit. I still have part if needed. Do an internet search and you will find allot of examples of this issue. This issue affects millions of vehicles.
Engine cut out while driving vehicle. Would not restart. Because I was stranded in the middle of a busy road, there was a 2 car rear collision that occurred behind me. Repairs were $400. 00 for me not to mention the cost and injury of the other cars involved in the accident behind me. I have since learned that this fuel pump module is a common problem in this truck due to corrosion problems resulting from a poor design. It is my opinion that this should be a recalled item.
Ok so we bought a Ford f150 2005 on Friday of last week which would be 08/09/2013 . The man assured us this was a safe and reliable vehicle. So we start our trip across the country to look at a new house in eastern north carolina. We stopped in arizona to see my girlfriends mom. Sur enough the truck would not start the next day. We take it to a mechanic and he says its the fuel pump so he changes it out we drive it 2 blocks down the street back to her parents house turn off the truck load it up with our stuff and it will not start again. So the mechanic comes back over says ok it must be the fuel modulater. So he changes out the fuel modulater and sure enough it worked we drove it two blocks turned it off, reloaded the truck again. Again it would not start back up, apparently the new modulater killed the brand new fuel pump we just paid $500 for so now we have to get another fuel pump as well. I am not happy after doing research there is thousands of people having the same problem and if anything like us we now have paid nearly $1000 to fix a problem that could easily be changed by Ford mounting the fuel modulate under the hood near the engine like the rest of the modulaters. Would you please look into this as soon as you can this is so uncalled for a lot of us work to hard for our money and our vehicles to have them break down with the same problem every time we stop. Included is a link to video where the guy explains the problem and all the people who have had the problem as well. . Read more...
While driving at posted speed limit the engine quit running, as if the key had been turned off. This stopped all control of the power steering and hydraulic brake control. Traffic behind me was forced to stop quickly and avoid me. While trying to pull over I almost went into the ditch because of lack of steering control. When I took the vehicle to the Ford dealer the service mgr said this was a common problem where the fuel pump driver module corrodes and causes problems but that there was no recall on it. If I had not been an experienced driver this could have caused a horrible accident.
