Driving truck on a two lane road when the power steering suddenly went out as I was rolling up to the stop sign. I managed to control the truck and get it turned around and back to my house without problem, but could only imagine what could have happened had I been on the interstate at a high rate of speed when this happened. After research, I saw that this was a known issue and that there have been some recalls but my truck was not one of them. Took it to the dealership and they repaired it for $2300. Said they had to replace the steering column. Called complaint line at the corporate office and they paid $700 of the $2300 which we are grateful for, but still feel that it should have been repaired as a recall issue and therefore no charge to us. This has been a known issue with the steering in Ford cars and trucks for a number of years. This truck is a 2013 and only has 40,000 miles on it. One would not expect such an expensive repair to be necessary on a truck with such low mileage. And surely a safety hazard if this had happened in heavy traffic or at a high rate of speed.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving various speeds and turning the steering wheel, an abnormal clicking noise was heard. Also, when the vehicle was turned off, there was an abnormal noise coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken to prime Ford saco (857 portland rd, saco, me 04072, (207) 282-0300) where it was diagnosed that the water pump and steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 109,480.
Vehicle stationary, 18f. Steering completely frozen. Not steering column/lock. Problem seems to be in electric motor? no fuses blown. No warning light/check engine light. Just (routine) serviced 12 Sep 18 at Ford. Mechanic appointment scheduled for 31 oct 18.
Very noticeable popping/bouncing/knocking of steering wheel/column when going over bumps. Occurs at all speeds and all steering angles.
While driving in a straight line under 40 mph I can feel a banging in the steering wheel traveling up the steering column it feels like the front of the truck is loose. This happens while driving on smooth roads as well as rougher roads, and is more pronounced when the temps outside go above 75 degrees and the longer I drive it the worse it gets, if it is a cooler day out it does not happen. Ford service dept. Wants to change out the lower steering shaft, but I don't think that is going to solve the problem. I know there are issues with the electronic power steering units in these trucks that cause these symptoms. I don't think a brand new $50,000 truck with 1600 miles on it should be having any problems.
