3 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2025

This is a major issue with Ford f150s. I am not sure how this was never a recall. Ford issues a TSB for this but nothing is the TSB fixes the issue. There is a major fault in the iwe system that causes the 4x4 to engage randomly causing the truck to have major steering issues. It causes grinding, like metal on metal grinding, the steering wheel locks in place at times and I personally almost dies several times from this. The locking steering wheel caused me to crash into a ditch because I could not bring the steering wheel back to center. This has randomly happened to me several times while driving, the TSB claims the issue to be intermittent, which it is due to the fault in this iwe system. Ford needs to literally cover and replace the entire iwe system before someone gets hurt. Please look this up, this is a very known issue that deserves to be a recall and not a TSB. Please help save lives.

4 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2024

This first began when we went to oregon from dry central valley in California and hit rain. Multiple error messages appeared: service advance trac, check 4x4, hill assist not available, abs, steering assist fault, etc. Power steering assist was lost and is now intermittent which creates a dangerous situation. The abs brakes made load groaning noises. I went to o’reilley’s and used their obd2 scanner. It showed codes: u1012-00, u0212-00, u0121-00, p062c-00, all being communication errors. I got a new battery and had a shop scan it. The clockspring was bad so it was replaced with an oem from sunrise Ford. He can’t get any communication with any of the other modules. I researched the issues and disconnected the battery while I cleaned the abs controller connection with electrical contact cleaner. I checked some of the grounding points that weren’t checked by the shop. All of the error messages are now gone except the steering assist fault. My research showed that this may be related to a wheel speed sensor or the front hub that contains the sensor. It also might be the abs controller. I entered engineering test mode and have the following continuous dtcs: c40182, c12100, c41582, c42082, c15100, c21200, c42982, c10200. Since they all end in 00 or 82 I think they are likely related. I was told in an online forum that they are communication errors. I think that might apply to the 00 errors, but don’t know about the 82 errors. The truck has under 28,000 miles and the extended warranty expired in may 2024.

5 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2024

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 50-55 mph, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The hill assist warning light and the power steering assist warning lights were illuminated. The contact's wife was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with rack and pinion failure; however, the part to do the repair was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.

6 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2024

After driving at highway speed, 75-80 mph for about 6 hours, the steering felt heavy, minor steering input resulted in major directional changes. The steering direction felt locked in that minor turn position and required significant effort over what was normal to return the direction to straight and that action caused a dramatic directional change. Upon my return home, I had the vehicle inspected by the dealer, kelly Ford in melbourne florida and they could not identify or duplicate the problem. I have significant experience in vehicle operation, including being a certified emergency vehicle operations driving instructor and this condition was extremely dangerous. Controlling the vehicle, keeping it in a lane and recovering from navigating curves in the road was a significant challenge. There were no notifications of an issue displayed on the dashboard before, during or after the event. The problem was not an issue at lower speed, below 45 mph after exiting the highway or when running at highway speed with everything cold from an overnight park until after 5-6 hours of operation at highway speed when the issue returned. After the initial onset of the issue on July 30, it reoccured on July 31. Our trips ater that were shorter until August 6 on our drive from wilson nc to our home in palm bay FL when the problem recurred. On what for me is a normal drive, the steering was again very heavy feeling and the steering unpredictable when driving on the florida turnpike on August 13 from my home in palm bay FL to fort lauderdale FL.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel became abnormally stiff, making it difficult to maneuver the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with electronic power steering failure. The vehicle was being repaired. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but confirmed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 97,215.

10 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2023

While driving I went to turn into a driveway of a busy restraint and the steering assist stopped working and I almost lost control of the vehicle. This I notice has been reported a lot as well as complained about online it is apparent nothing is going to get done to make Ford fix it even if someone gets killed, how can this not be a safety issue $$$ something needs investigated $$$ maybe even the $$$ investigators $$$ claiming there is$$$ no problem.

11 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2023

While driving on freeway comming to a slight curve the steering wheel began to try and turn back to straight fighting me , then after exiting I went to turn it began to bind in the turn and now feels funny checked the links and the steering shaft ujoints there all good.

12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

13 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2023

The truck will pull to left then to right . Seems. To steer hard . The dealer has replaced two steering racks in my truck . Workes well for a short time I have only 27000 miles on this truck . If you you google. This problem you can read the complaints for 2013 to 2019 f150 something needs to be done. Thank you the dates that the dealer put in new steering rack was 4-20-21 and 3 -22 -22. The dealer has been good to work with . It is a problem that Ford needs to take care of before someone gets killed if they have not already. Thank you.

14 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2022

My steering seemed to be jerking. I had "the works" done at the dealership. They did not note any issue during inspection. I was driving my granddaughter and her friend to the mall. While going around a turn my wheel locked up. I was able to jerk it hard to the opposite side to avoid the oncoming vehicles. I was able to pull off the road and called for a tow. I have several friends who own the same type of vehicle, Ford f150, say they have had similar issues. Mine is a 2017 ecoboost supercab.

15 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2022

The truck uses start stop technology. When you start to move after it has stopped the power steering does not start working initially making turns nearly impossible. Once the power steering builds pressure it returns to normal steering. This has occurred multiple times and seems to get worse as the truck ages.

16 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2022

Electric power steering assembly unexpectedly fails resulting in increased risk of injury or fatality from collision.

17 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2022

The power steering abruptly stopped working while driving after two violent jerks to the left on the steering wheel. I was able to maintain my lane travel thankfully but it was a close call.

18 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2022

The abs and traction control lights came on. Then out of no where the power steering just stopped working.

19 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2022

I was making a turn on a curve in the roadway and truck lost power steering, causing me to fight the steering to keep it in my lane so I didn’t hit the car in the other lane around the curve. Call dealership and I was informed that that it would be over a week or so before they can even schedule me in for an appointment. Took to another shop and they said racks piñon. Be said it could be power steering control module’s.

20 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2021

The electric power steering system can take up to 10 seconds to turn back on after the auto start/ stop function restarts the engine. The truck has done it intermittently since new, but now has started to do it more often. It has caused me a few close calls making right-hand turns. I start to take off only to find I have no steering assist and either have to manually steer the truck or stop and wait in the middle of an intersection for it to turn on. Last week this caused me to run wide into the turn lane for the lane I was turning into, thankfully it was not occupied at the time or it could have caused an accident. Since it is not repeatable, and there are no warning/trouble lights the dealer is of no use. I asked when the truck was under warranty was told they didn't want to look at it unless it was able to be reproduced on demand. This issue is occurring at a rate of about 1-3 incidents a month.

21 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2021

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the steering became difficult to turn. The contact stated the track assist and the hill descent warning lights were illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the gear assembly to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending the repairs. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 93,926.

22 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2021

Steering keeps on vibrating… feels like the whole truck is bouncing. Have done multiple alignments, rotates, balances, tire replacement and nothing has worked the steering gets very stiff around 70-80 mph and rides smooth then bumpy over and over , riding bumpy most of the time it’s on and off and it has nothing to do with what speed I go above 65-70 mph making me swerve and jerk the truck repeatedly. Also truck tends to vibrate obnoxiously at an idle almost like it’s going to die on me, I noticed this happening in drive when I come to a stop it stutters and almost dies… it has died 3 times on me now and have got 1 check engine light that has disappeared. Thinking this may have something to do with the steering vibrations.

23 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2021

Steering assist was once again disabled within a week after the last incident with steering assist caution advisory. This time it almost caused an accident. Steering malfunction happened right at the moment while making a left turn at the inside lane of an intersection. While the steering wheel was turned left to negotiate the turn, the steering became stiff and made the vehicle encroached on the outside lane. Applied brake immediately and forced steered vehicle back to inside lane.

24 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2021

Power steering becomes non-functional and " steering assist fault service required" warning is displayed. Happened three times, twice within (odometer reading) 44410 miles and again at 44951 miles. The vehicle is difficult to steer and can cause accidents especially during high speed on highways. The problem eventually goes away after letting the car rest with engine turned off for a while. The malfunction does not produce fault code and dealer is not able to troubleshoot/replicate.

25 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2020

Very dangerous wiring design. Wire harness too close to engine exhaust manifold, turbo - as result - melted wires. Tin foil did not protect from melting. Happened while driving on 75 interstate - vehicle looses power steering, cruise control and throws faulty overheat. Contacted manufacturer about it - was given run around.

26 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2019

The steering gets stiff after steady driving of 80 to 150 miles. I had it checked at a Ford dealer and was told there was not a recall on this year model for the particular problem. The dealer offered no other explanation or solution to the problem. This happens all the time and only stops after the vehicle rests for several hours. The dates are from sept. 2018 until now. I bought the vehicle used from enterprise leasing.

27 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2019

After the auto start/stop feature engages the power steering does not immediately return. So when I am stopped at a traffic light, stop sign or left turn and the auto start/stop restarts the engine when I release the brake it can take up to 3 seconds for the power steering to reengage. I have had this to the dealer and was advised that this is functioning as designed. The vehicle did not behave this way when I first purchased. This could be very dangerous in an emergency situation require a rapid restart and turn.

28 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2019

Power steering went out, lane assist, hill assist, lane keeping it, braking assist have all stopped working. Abs light is on and I am getting multiple senor warnings.

29 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

Front end shimmy / wobble at 55 mph after hitting bump in road.

30 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2019

When on a complete stop in a traffic intersection, the autostart feature is engaged shutting the engine off. When the left turn light turns green, I take my foot off the brakes and initiate a turn. During this turn, the steering becomes difficult. . Read more...

31 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2018

This vehicle has the automatic stop/start feature and for a few seconds after the vehicle starts back up after being stopped- there is no steering control.

32 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2018

Ford motor company documentation (2017 RV & trailer towing guide) states this model of truck, with the Ford 3. 5l ecoboost engine, can safely tow 11,500lbs (maximum loaded trailer weight). Based on personal experience and consulting multiple trailer towing experts, this is a misrepresentation of the material facts and capabilities of this truck. Additionally, it puts unsuspecting drivers in an unsafe and dangerous driving situation.

33 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Steering control temporarily lost when driving.

34 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2018

At highway speeds, on I-15 in utah at approximately 70 mph, traveling over an overpass bridge to the transition to the highway and hitting the bump the front wheels and related suspension including the steering wheel started to shake violently,. . A condition historically known as "death wobble". This did not cease until reducing speed to below 50 mph. Mileage on the vehicle was 10,141. Vehicle is completely stock with no modifications. After a tire rotation and inspection finding no visable issues the vehicle still continues to unexpectedly/randomly exhibit this problem. This occurs only at higher highway speeds and only after traveling over a transition or rough pavement typically assiciated with an overpass bridge.

35 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2018

. Last Sunday I got a 2017 f150 XLT stuck in a small two foot snow drift. Once I got stuck I tried rocking the truck, but the transmission would not shift from forward to rear ward without the truck coming to a complete stop. After several attempts I got a fault warning for the limited slip diff. The warning for the power steering, the abs, the parking brake, the hill descent, hill start assist, park assist warning (which I do not have), advanced track warning (which I do not have) and 4x4 low. Additionally the truck would shift in and out of 4 high, but not 4 low. In 4 high no tires would move. In two high only the left rear tire would spin. Because of darkness and grizzly bear I had to wait until morning to walk out far enough to get cell reception. The temp never got below 34 degrees, but it did rain and snow all night. When the tow truck pulled me out of the drift (a total of 10 feet) everything except the power steering worked. It was not until the 3 rd day when the power steering suddenly started to work. The dealer will not see me until next week and I am afraid I will loose all the fault codes by then. Its great to have a 4x4 that only works on dry ground. Had this happened in the winter or further away from cell phone coverage it could have proven to be a life threatening situation.
