Transmission shifts eradicate, jumps into gear (hard) motor rpm raises high as transmission actually jumping , not smooth shifting into gear .
Transmission hard shifting then when shifting to 8th gear stops pulling causes engine to rev. When stopped the transmission won't down shifting to 1st gear. Sticking in 7th gear . Truck won't move. While traveling it suddenly will shift from 10th gear back to 7th . Stops pulling at that point. Then goes into 8th.
4/10/26 - I left my neighborhood to turn right, from a stop, onto a 55 mph highway. Headed to the grocery store, with my 6-month old daughter. The trucks transmission (f150 10r80 10 speed) would not shift any higher than 2nd gear, of 10 gears. This caused the truck to not accelerate at a reasonable speed and only do about 15mph. Two cars behind me nearly collided with me as I could not achieve or maintain speed. I quickly adjusted the steering and pulled the truck over on the grass shoulder. This avoided any accidents and only scared myself, my daughter, and two other drivers behind me. My daughter and I could have easily been severely wounded or killed. I did not know or expect the transmission would suddenly fail. This failure to change gears or hard shifts is a classic symptom of the Ford 10r80 transmissions cdf drum failure. Ford knows about this issue and refuses to recall these vehicles or repair them unless they are under warranty. My truck has 85k miles, just outside the 60k mile warranty. My neighbor with two small children has the same truck with the same issue, also potentially endangering their lives. This should be a forced recall by Ford to protect everyone on the road.
Transmission gear failure vehicle: 2019 Ford F-150 mileage: 67,000 ?description of incident: I am reporting a catastrophic internal mechanical failure of the 10r80 transmission. While driving, the vehicle emitted a strong, pungent odor of burnt transmission fluid followed by a total loss of gear engagement. The failure was sudden and occurred without a "check engine" light or warning, leaving the vehicle stranded in a dangerous position in active traffic. ?technical assessment of cause: upon professional teardown, it was determined that the internal gear sets were severely damaged and required full replacement. The transmission fluid was heavily oxidized (burnt), and the planetary gear assemblies showed signs of extreme thermal distress and mechanical chipping. This indicates a failure of the internal lubrication system or a structural defect in the gear hardening process, leading to metal-on-metal contact and total component failure at only 67,000 miles. ?safety concern: the suddenness of this gear failure creates a significant risk of a "stalled vehicle" scenario in high-speed environments. Furthermore, a mechanical gear failure carries the risk of internal components fracturing and potentially locking the rear wheels, which could lead to a complete loss of vehicle control. This is a premature failure of a major powertrain component that is advertised to last the life of the vehicle.
Transmission is bad.
Transmission. Extremely delayed up shifts. Lurching when placed into reverse. Vehicle would also roll backwards when switching from reverse to drive. Degradation happens over two thousand miles. Got to the point it was a clear safety issue. Cdf failure confirmed by independent shop. Repaired at my cost.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 5 mph, the vehicle lunged into first and second gear. No warning light was illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 50,434.
Transmission jerking out of gear and failing to shift into gear revving and pulling while trying to shift into next gear stalling in intersection.
Transmission shudder, feels like driving over rumble strips, reducing power and causing vehicle to slow, sometimes causing engine to stall. When it occurs in traffic and/or at highway speeds can cause dangerous rear-end collision. The vehicle is at the dealership/service department now. No warning light, symptoms began suddenly and have increased in frequency and severity since first occurring less than 100 miles ago.
2019 f150 10 speed automatic transmission needed repairs for hard shifting at 45k miles, and a complete rebuild at 85k for major failure.
The 10-speed automatic transmission (10r80) in my 2019 Ford F-150 has failed and now requires a full replacement costing. Transmission failure while driving can cause sudden loss of propulsion or power, resulting in a dangerous loss of vehicle control on public roads. This is a known safety defect affecting many 2017–2020 F-150 models.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced transmission failures on several occasions. The contact stated that the transmission unexpectedly slipped out of gear and the vehicle unexpectedly jerked, and the vehicle drove roughly. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 25e070000 (power train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The dealer was contacted on several occasions and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 97,019.
I’ve been experiencing harsh shifts between 1st and 3rd. Slip shifts and delayed engagement between 5th and 8th gears. Recently I just experienced no engagement at all while accelerating from red light loss of complete power and slippage. Truck just stopped accelerating which could cause an accident. I got no warning. This is not a new problem. It’s an ongoing issue that needs to be rectified before serious injuries. 10r80 transmission. Cdf drum bushing failure and outer casing putting metal shavings in unit causing valve body damage.
Transmission skips gears and shudders causing unpredictable acceleration and hesitation that can interfere with traffic flow. This issue can place you and the cars around you in danger because of the unpredictable performance.
Harsh/delayed engagement and/or harsh/delayed shift very hard shifting from 3-4 and 7-8 to suggest cdf drum failing.
Check engine light came on with a message to the Ford app for "powertrain malfunction". Took vehicle to paul miller Ford dealership for comprehensive diagnosis. Diagnostic report indicated gear 4 incorrect ratio. Transmission failure of cdf drum. Transmission needs to be replaced. Dealership quoted $10,140. 54. This is a know issue by Ford, as the 2018 F-150 with 10 speed transmissions have a recall. The truck has 84,249 miles on it. The truck was purchased new in July 2019. The vehicle puts drivers and passengers at risk by stalling, fire, or hard shift in traffic putting safety of others in harms way. Potential injury from accident.
After stopping at a red light truck acted like it was in neutral. I got the orange wrench icon on the dash. I had to pull over and stop and restart. Seems to be a known problem.
1) vehicle transmission erratic shifting ,skips gear 2 and 4 a lot and sometimes from stop to 33 mph it seems to go into neutral then bang back into gear. Grand kids in back gets knocked around hard enough to lose food/drinks. It dose to back but now the truck is less than 10mph. 2) on start up something in the engine jingle and gaggle sound for 1-3 seconds. . This happens when truck has been sitting for long period.
Transmission slips out of gear when in stop and go traffic searching random gears while driving slips when trying to accelerate.
Transmission shifting is erratic at the best times and likes to randomly downshift from 10th gear to 1st gear and having to take drastic action to avoid a serious rear end collision in heavy traffic as many others who've reported the same issues. Ford is very aware of this issue but will not address it for most of the owners. The issue is well enough known Ford has had issued many tsbs but limited the action to a handful only with the most recent being TSB 22-2428. They have publicly stated the problems with the 10r80 valve body and cdf clutch assembly, corrected it, but will not make it right with the thousands of owners. I contacted my dealer, who forwarded me to Ford corporate. I was informed that Ford will not do anything about it, and I was advised by the Ford csr to make a complaint here. Will the us government hold Ford accountable; probably not unfortunately as looking through the endless history of reports here shows this is probably a wasted attempt. I have tried to upload pdfs of documentation, but the system will not accept them.
Driving on highway, felt transmission slip. Went into limp and could only go 40mph. Pulled off highway and had truck towed. Transmission failed.
Driving on the freeway, my transmission made a loud bang jerked the truck and then completely failed. I was traveling a consistent speed around 75 mph it was in 10th gear just starting on an incline to an overpass. The jerk caused me to almost pull out of my lane, the failure happening on an incline made the vehicle slow considerably, with no shoulder to pull over on it had enough momentum to make it over the high point in the over pass and I coasted to the side of the freeway as soon as I could. Transmission fluid was pouring out of vent tube covering the underside of the truck and getting all over the road. I also ride motorcycles and understand how bad of a situation that can be for anyone riding behind me. Towed to aamco who inspected and diagnosed as the cdf drum failed and had to have the entire transmission rebuilt. No warning light and no indication that it was having any problems before the failure. My daily commute is around 40 miles one way, I was coming home from work, and I was approximately 8 miles from my home. I doubt aamco has the transmission still and the incident happened about 2 months ago.
When transmission is cold it falls on its face going into 3rd and will shift from 3 to 7th back to 1st til warm once warm it shifts better but harshly into 3rd gear.
While driving my truck hard shifts from 3-4-5 and also at 8-9. It seems it misses shifting from 1-2-3 missing 2nd gear all together. At high speeds the transmission has slipped out of gear. I have called Ford and reported the issue as I was looking to see if this issue was recalled. Ford stated they were aware of the issue but no recalls were issued. I was forced to seek help from a transmission shop and incurred a huge bill replacing the cdf drum and rings.
The front passenger brake caliper came completely off when I was driving. The only warning I had was when my brake pedal went straight to the floor when depressed. I was forced to pull into a gas station and keep driving in circles till the vehicle slowed enough to drive into a curb to stop so I could put the vehicle in park. I then had my vehicle towed home and replaced the part myself as I dont feel comfortable taking my vehicle to the dealership to be worked on because of past experiences. The other issue is when I accelerate my pcm goes into what I would call it as limp mode. The vehicle has no power to accelerate and it happens randomly. It will stay like that until the vehicle is turned off and key removed for atleast 15 minutes. When started back up it is back to normal but if the accelerator pedal is push to quickly it will go back into limp mode if I put the vehicle in sport mode it happens almost immediately. Also the transmission has random down and upshifts and shifts very harshly at times. I drive over a mountain pass atleast 5 times a month and have been stuck on the side of the road multiple times waiting for my vehicle to go back to normal to make it over the pass.
Transmission 10r80 2 times now my transmission has slipped while trying to accelerate from a stop entering the flow of traffic. Both times it has happened after the transmission has warmed up to operating temperature. No it has not been confirmed or inspected by a dealer or independent service center. There has been no warning lights or messages. The transmission irregularly slips shifting to 3rd gear shortly after a cold start up before the transmission has fully warmed up.
Problems with truck shifting, hard shifting. Truck engine reving up when driving and you try to accelerate, like it was in neutral. Transmission making loud clunking noise and jerky stop when coming to a stop. I thought I had been rear ended.
My trucks transmission cdf drum would cause a sudden down shift to first gear while driving.
This vehicle is currently in the shop and the tech is saying we may have to have a transmission replacement. The tech also stated that Ford knows there is a issues with these transmissions and they have not corrected it or made any improvements. Also, Ford will not issue a recall. The vehicle has a very hard shift and is dangerous to drive and it also completely shut down on us, putting our life in danger. We do all the proper maintenance and upkeep on the vehicle at a Ford dealership. This issue is very disappointing as these are "american made" vehicles.
Originally when I got my vehicle would sometimes have troubles shifting into 4th gear where it was real clunky. As I came up on 80,000 mi, it has now gotten much more clunky and noisy for a lot of shifting. It will skip second forth gear regularly and at times it will go into 7th gear at less than 25 mph. It has slipped out of that gear as well and then the rpms will go up to 4-5,000. I've also have had, luckily at lower speeds in town, the gear shift from 8th all the way down to one and then jump around causing the vehicle to be jerking severely. I sometimes will have it go into limp mode and other times it just props up the service morning. Most recently it seems to just slip out of gear and the engine revs high with nothing that I can do even with my foot off the gas.
The 10r80 transmission on the f150 has extremely erratic shifting, which occasionally results in delayed shifts or what feels like no acceleration when gas pedal is pressed. Turning left through oncoming traffic, I've had the transmission hesitate for moments before engaging, resulting in almost being hit by oncoming traffic. I've also had the delayed shifting at speed cause the vehicle to temporarily slow down which almost resulted in being rear ended.
Transmission issue. Sudden down shift and spike in rpms while driving. Hard shift during acceleration.
Dear NHTSA office of defects investigation, I am submitting this complaint to formally report a transmission failure involving a vehicle equipped with the 10r80 automatic transmission, which I believe represents a serious safety concern and may be part of a larger pattern of premature failures. The transmission began showing signs of failure at approximately 52,000 miles. Early symptoms included hesitation, harsh or delayed shifting, inconsistent engagement, and warning signs related to drivetrain or transmission performance. I sought service and diagnosis, but despite many similar failures being reported by other owners, no corrective action or goodwill repair was offered by the manufacturer or dealership. I was quoted approximately $9,000 by the dealership for a full transmission replacement. Due to the high cost, I continued operating the vehicle while monitoring the issue. Over time, the condition worsened significantly. As the transmission continued to fail, the vehicle would sometimes move forward and then suddenly stall or lose drive power while in traffic. This occurred while my family was in the vehicle and created a major safety concern, as the truck could unexpectedly lose movement in active traffic lanes, putting us at risk of a collision and leaving us unable to safely accelerate or clear intersections. On January 30, 2026, the transmission failed completely. The vehicle no longer moved when placed in gear, leaving it inoperable and unsafe to drive. Because assistance was denied and no recall or corrective action was available, I was forced to repair the vehicle at an independent repair shop at my own expense. The repair cost is approximately $7,000 out of pocket. This failure occurred at relatively low mileage for a major drivetrain component and appears consistent with numerous reports from other owners experiencing similar transmission issues. It is concerning that consumers are being required to absorb expensive repairs despite what appears t.
Transmission skips 4th gear then dropps down all the way to first then jumps all the way to 8th then back down to 4th again. Jerks real ha4d when it happens.
Around curves truck will down shift too many gears. The problem was when it did it recently with the icey roads the tires locked up for a second and I got sideways. I got it straight but if a car was coming I would crashed. My speed was around 50 but I let off the gas to slow down for the curver never applied brakes yet. It does it usually when slowing down its done it since ive owned it and its never bothered me too much until this recent instance. No warning lights, only recall is back up camera I dont have issues with. Ive complained to many Ford dealers and my year dose not qualify, if I want to get it fixed I need to buy new transmission.
