12 problems related to hydraulic power assist steering system have been reported for the 2001 Ford F-250. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My 2001 F-250 super duty diesel has steering problems. Its hard to believe that the number one selling truck in the nation for who knows how many years, would sell a truck to the public that has power steering problems. When I am trying to park I have no power steering at all. I know that it is due to receiving all the power to the braking system, but with all the technology out there today why would Ford have a problem trying to figure out how to have power braking and power steering at the same time. My 77 high boy had better steering with 35 inch tires than my 2001 has.
Steering feels loose, wanders. Steering wheel jumps back and forth when you hit a bump. Noticeable at high and low speeds. Makes vehicle control a problem at times. Have had this problem for approximately a year. Has been checked by dealership more than once, and they state that they can't find anything wrong.
Vehicle loses power steering assist while driving at low speed or at at stop postion. The vehicle has been to the dealer, who was unable to resolve the probem. The consumer stated that he can not trun the steering wheel when he has the brake on.
Power steering failure of some sort has caused power assist to be applied at full capacity at all times. There is no steering feel whatsoever, and there is no self-centering of the steering. An extreme level of attention to careful steering is required to operate the truck due to the slightest touch of the steering wheel becoming an extreme response by front wheels. When the vehicle is stopped, with brakes applied, the steering wheel can eaisly be spun from lock to lock by just pushing on the wheel slightly - it will continue to turn untouched.
On a slippery road with power steering consumer was unable to change directions and caused a crash.
The truck will not turn at low speed. Not enough power assist.
Lack of power assist, especially at low speeds and while braking.
On several occasions, the power steering is weak or non-existing when putting foot on the brake and driving in slow conditions. Dealer states this is normal, consumer also states that tail gate does not open, stabilizer link replaced.
When the brakes were applied at low speede the power steering locked up which made it difficult to steer vehicle.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
This problem has to do with the inability to turn the steering wheel when truck is beeing operated from 0-5 mph and when brake pedal is depressed. The power assist is not strong enough to turn the wheel due to brakes and steering using the same assist resulting in severe hardship attempting to do things like back a trailer or parrallel .
When braking hard the steering locks up. This has happened 2 times and Ford says it is normal. This is very dangerous and could cause a serious accident. I almost hit 2 vehicles because of this problem! dt.
