Four problems related to power steering pump have been reported for the 2008 Ford F-250. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
We have no problem with our truck until a couple of days the power steering gearbox stop working while driving. It barley works if the truck is at a stand still it will not turn at all. Their is nothing wrong with my power steering pump. I look at the top of the gear-box and notice a leak coming around the set screw that holds the bearings.
Steering on vehicle became increasingly difficult. The power steering pump lost half of the fluid. Replaced the power steering pump. Sixty days later the steering gear box bound up and would not allow the wheels to be turned. The steering gear box was replaced.
After appox. One hour at 65 mph on cruise control I disengaged the cruise control , coasting to a speed of about 25 mph or less to make a upcoming left turn. As I started to turn I pressed on the brake and found it was without assist, and the same was true for the steering. I applied as much pressure as I could to both the brake pedal and the steering wheel and fortunately made the turn with out incident. I tapped the fuel pedal and both the brakes and steering assist returned to normal. I've had the problem before with loss of brakes but have always been going straight. I report this to the dealership but since the vehicle doesn't show a error code they can't fix it! at least if I die in a crash this will be my record. I will report the truck again to the dealer but they wont fix it. I have seen that others are experiencing also. I won't let my wife drive the truck it is not safe!!! this is a design flaw the system is drawing fluid for both the brakes and steering from the powersteering pump, also I believe from what I have read the fluid travels thru a screen(filter) which can plug starving the system of fluid needed to properly operate the steering and brakes.
Intermittent problem with steering. Sometimes steering is fine. Other times truck wants to pull left after making a left turn. Same condition after right turns. I've had a couple of experiences while steering is pulling right or left, trying to correct the trucks jumps from lane to lane. No accident yet ! very scary! I looked the problem up on the internet they call this problem " memory steer". I also read the problem is the steering pump. The spools in the pump that shuttles power steering fluid to right or left turns are sticking. I strongly suggest a recall before a fatal accident happens.
