Tailgate problems of the 2017 Ford F-350

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-350. The contact stated that while hauling a trailer and reversing, the powered tailgate erroneously opened and struck the trailer. During the failure, the tailgate and the trailer were damaged. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 103,000.

While driving so far the rear tailgate has dropped open twice. First time backing a trailer almost bent gate on trailer jack 03/13/21 and the second time was going down the interstate and lost a gallon jug of oil and the rest 4 gals were about to go off the tailgate. Had to stop and close tailgate. 03/30/21.

The power tailgate will release while in motion. I had the Ford recall completed once, I believe around September of 2020. I just had the truck back to the dealer because the power tailgate fix does not appear to correct the issue. They just removed the original recalled parts and did the recall again on my truck. This current work was completed on 1/20/21. Please force Ford to do a reprogram of the body control module to include notification when the tailgate is open in the display in the dash. I will have to wait and see if the reinstallation of the recall will correct the issue, my thoughts are not.

Had recall perform for tailgate opening unexpectedly on March 3, 2020. In December 2020, the tailgate opened multiple times while driving on the highway and while reversing to attach a trailer causing damage to the tailgate. We contacted kendal Ford in meridian id to get this problem resolved and they said Ford would not cover it since the recall was performed and is now closed. They want in excess of $1500. 00 to fix the problem that should have been fixed with the recall. Ford will not budge in covering this issue which was part of the original recall. Obviously the recall for the tailgate did not work. Please can you have another recall issued for this tailgate issue. It is extremely dangerous to have items in the bed of our truck and not knowing when the tailgate will open and contents fall out causing an accident.

The tailgate opens intermittently even when locked, especially when you hit a bump in the road. It is like the latch it not working correctly. Also, the radiator keeps leaking on the left upper hose on the drivers side.

While driving on the highway in my 2017 Ford f350 pickup and pulling a bumper pull trailer the tailgate released by itself and lowered. It came in contact with the trailer jack and when I pulled of the road it damaged the tailgate. I had taken the truck in for a tailgate recall several months prior and a second time for the the tailgate not opening. Automax Ford in killeen TX advised me that the tech found nothing wrong with the recall work and they would not cover the issue. When the tailgate went down on its own the doors were locked and the truck was in gear and moving, bothe safety features that should prevent the tailgate from unlocking'.

Occasionally, the tailgate will automatically fall, when I put the transmission in reverse, from a stationary position. I verified that this can happen when the key fob is not in my pocket. Thankfully, it hasn't happened while driving. The truck has less than 50k miles on it. It started, for me, soon after I purchased it used, in June 2020.

I took my truck in for a nonrelated repair. When I was there I was informed that there was a safety recall on tailgate opening. I never had a problem with it opening but since it was already at the dealership for other repairs, I okayed the recall repair on the tailgate opening on its on. Now since I have had the repair done on my truck the tailgate opens on its own now. I have taken it back several times for the problem. But I have been told that if they can't verify the problem they can't fix it. But I can't make it do it on command. It does it on its own once every 7 to 14 days. Can I get help on getting this problem repaired? most of the time when this happens I get into my truck, start it and go to back up. I get warning tone and notice that the tailgate is down. I'm worried that I could be pulling a trailer when this happens and it damages my tailgate and trailer.

While towing my 5th wheel trailer 65 miles, the tailgate opened by itself causing damage to trailer and tailgate.

My 2017 Ford F-350drw tailgate keeps opening when driving or stationary. It has opened at least 10 times in the past year and at least 15 times since purchasing. Trying to convince Ford dealerships that the tailgate was up, and I did not forget to secure or touched one of the buttons to release the lock. On November 21, 2019, while towing on I-44 in oklahoma, our 5th wheel RV, the tailgate opened and damaged the tailgate along with the two doors of the RV. I always check my truck and RV after each service stop. I checked at the previous stop prior to lawton, oklahoma and the tailgate was up. I stopped at the last service station on I-44 prior to entering texas and saw the tailgate down and the damage. Until I get my truck repaired, I have had to install black bungie cords to keep the tailgate from falling.

The tailgate at times comes unlatched. I do have a canopy which keeps the tailgate from dropping down all the way. Truck only has 10700 miles on it and is still on warranty. I have taken it to the dealer twice, they cannot duplicate the problem, nor find anything wrong. I have called Ford customer service 3 times, and have done what they told me to do, but they do not follow through with what they tell me they are going to do. Vechicle is in motion, and has happened when pulling my cargo trailer. Date below was the last time this happened. I do not drive this vechicle much.

Tailgate opens on its own without driver command while driving.

The vehicle was taken to flood Ford of east greenwich (2545 s county trl, east greenwich, ri 02818, (833) 651-8957) where they found straps and an air mattress stuck in between the tailgate. The latch was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 25,700.

For no reason the tailgate will open on it's own. Either driving or parked. Tailgate has come down a number of times. At highway speeds and in a parking lot.

Electronically latched tailgate opening by itself while driving. Especially worrying when towing 5th wheel trailer as impact with trailer can occur. Local dealer inspected and said, "unable to duplicate. Unable to repair. " has occurred multiple times.

Well driving tailgate opens on its own causing damage to tailgate trailer . Was in for repairs but is still opening not safe don't want law suit for stuff that falls out. Lost ratchet straps & 2 power drills batteries & charger no light or buzzer letting driver know that tailgate has opened there is one for hood think I would notice my hood. Scared to drive also too costly & dangerous to drivers behind me.

Two issues. : 1) I had a hard time keeping the tires inflated to the correct levels. After four or five trips back to the dealership, this issue may be corrected. It was so bad I had to purchase a pump to make sure I could pump the tires up when I was away from home -- rving. The dealership would have to have known about the issue when they sold me the vehicle. The truck could lose 30 pounds of tire pressure over a two week period. I purchased the truck in March 2018. 2) on four or five occasions the tailgate has fallen open. Once it did it while I was towing a trailer. On the other occasions it has fallen open without us knowing it. Today, my wife used the truck. She got home and parked the truck in the driveway. When she went out to check the mail, she found the tail gate open. We recently complained to fox Ford, the dealership that sold us the truck. When my wife took the truck in for an oil change, she complained about the tailgate issue. They claimed they "tightened it" according to my wife. Well, the problem has not been solved. I will complain again to them tomorrow.

Ford tail gate opens spontaneously while in motion. It has happened 3 times. It has damaged my travel trailer and the top of the tailgate. The latest occurrence was 11/8/18. I don't recall the other dates. It is unknown when it opened. I realized that it had opened when I heard the crunching sound it the tailgate damaging my trailer. I have not way of knowing when the tailgate opened, I only know when it caused damage to my trailer. I am reluctant to put cargo in my truck because it come out and damage property or kill someone.

Tailgate has opened up on it's own on two different occasions. Once while parked and once while driving.

The manufacture was not contacted. The failure mileage was 27,000. Tf.

Tailgate opens unexpectedly. I bought my 2017 f350 lariat dually used in June 2017. 8 days after I bought the truck the tailgate opened while I was towing a gooseneck horse trailer. Luckily I was about 50 feet from my driveway. The tailgate was contacted by the trailer as I turned and has some damage from an aluminum foot stool falling out. It has happened 3 other times. Each time I thought I had possibly bumped the key fob in my pocket, as it has a tailgate release button. You do have to touch the button two times in succession for the tailgate to open. Each time it has happened I have started or moved the truck, unlocked and opened the drivers door and then got back in the truck. I believe there is some correlation but I have not been able to duplicate it. Each time the vehicle was under way, but I did not see it open as I have tinted windows. And I usually don't watch the tailgate in the mirrors.

On may 24th, 2018 while driving my tailgate automatically came down. I was towing a 5th wheel RV trailer at the time and damage occurred to the tailgate top trim and the RV front garage door. Both the trim and the front garage door had to be replaced, plus touchup paint for the tailgate edges.

I'm April of 2018 the electric tailgate on my 2017 Ford F-350 started opening on its own anytime and anywhere. It did not matter if the truck was in park or in gear but did not open at speeds above 10 mph or so. After going to the Ford dealership in elkhart in. I was told there was nothing that could be done because if they unhooked the wiring l could not open the tailgate. I pull a 5th wheel trailer with the truck so this was not an option if l wanted a tailgate. I tried to watch the best l could before taking off to make sure the tailgate was closed when l would move the truck. I did not notice that it had come down again and made a turn with the trailer hooked to the truck. Needless to say the tailgate was crushed beyond use and broke a twilight lens at the same time. Again l went to the Ford dealership in elkhart in and was told they had no reports of problems and there was nothing they could do about it. The tailgate has not been replaced do to the fact l am sure there is still an is sure.

The rear tailgate will open randomly on it's own. I've taken it in and nothing was done . This could cause a serious accident when towing a 5th wheel because the tailgate would hit the trailer. When this happens potential loss of steering could happen.

Power tailgate opened while driving on the interstate. Some items in the bed were lost.

Rear tailgate opens by itself. Unknown when it occurs as I have a camper shell which prevents the tailgate from completely opening. This has occurred 40-50 times randomly since purchasing the truck new in August 2017. Notified the dealer of issue and Ford TSB-2196 but was informed that because my vehicle was produced after June 2017, it does not apply to my problem. Unless they can duplicate the issue, they will not address the issue. No damage has occurred because of the camper shell preventing tailgate from dropping.

The tailgate has opened on it's own while driving at least 12 times. The truck is one year old and has approximately 13k miles.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-350 sd. While driving approximately 70 mph, a noise was present coming from the rear of the vehicle. After stopping the vehicle, it was discovered that the tailgate had erroneously opened. The local dealer (osseo Ford of osseo, wisconsin) was notified of the failure and replaced the tailgate.
