Ford F-450 owners have reported 17 problems related to service brakes (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford F-450 based on all problems reported for the F-450.
The contact owned a 2021 Ford F-450 super duty. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph on an 8 percent decline and pulling a trailer, the vehicle slightly responded upon depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, the transmission failed to downshift and was stuck in 10th gear. The contact pumped the brakes; however, the failure persisted. The contact drove into the shoulder of the roadway, and the vehicle was able to stop. The contact noticed smoke, and upon inspecting underneath the vehicle, the contact noticed that the rear brakes were on fire. The contact was able to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle was towed to the residence of the contact's friend, where the trailer was detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was driven to the dealer, where it was test-driven, and the contact was informed that no failure was found. The vehicle was taken back to the residence of the contact's friend. The contact stated that upon depressing the brake pedal to start the vehicle, the brake pedal travelled all the way to the floorboard. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and traded for another vehicle. The vehicle was being repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.

My 2021 Ford f 450 will not actuate the electric over hydraulic brakes on my gooseneck trailer. I was hauling my tractor to one of my hay fields when a car pulled out in front me. I apply my foot to the brake pedal and the truck and trailer did not slow down liked it use to and I almost rear ended the vehicle that pulled out in front of me. After this I try to apply just the trailer brakes using the brake actuator on the dash and the trailer brakes never operated. I check my fuses and they were good and I checked the trailer using another truck and they worked. I then checked the trailer wiring connections on my truck and they were good. I have done a manual reset on my trucks programming and the truck still will not activate the trailer brakes. Please help.
I was driving the truck and applied the brakes to slow down for a turn, the anti-lock brake system activated and I lost the power steering and power brakes. There is steering fluid all over the engine so apparently either a line broke or the reservoir broke. This truck has the hydro boost brake system which is why I lost the steering and the brakes.

Trailer brake controller will randomly announce "trailer wiring fault" and lose all brakes. Brake power will momentarily show requested power then cut off. Trailer has been confirmed ok, works 100% on two other trucks, ground continuity is 100% via plug only, brake wiring and resistance all in spec for 3 dexter 7000# axles (electric drum) will randomly cut out after working for days. Usually when needed most. Dealer claims "cannot duplicate" had been to dealer 4x for it, to include a software update. I have a bs in mechanical engineering automotive concentration from what used to be gms in house engineering school. (gmi/kettering) to say I'm intimately familiar with how this should work is an understatement. Also, the manual slider control should just provide requested power to brakes, bypassing any bxm/tcm interlocks. In aviation, if I use a backup brake it bypasses antiskid, anything else. Towing a 21,000 pound trailer in the mountains when this thing decides to not work is sketchy. It will eventually cause an accident given that it's a widespread issue known to people but magically no recall. If this was an airbus 321 or boeing 737 we'd have an airworthiness directive at a minimum.

04/2022 F-450 with 13,000 miles (garaged over winter) no boat towing. Reporting the first incident/time connected to trailer with electric over hydraulic brakes is 18 months after purchasing the truck. The F-450 has intermittent power to the #5 pin (+batt) of the 7-way trailer connection. This pin is for powering the electric over hydraulic brakes. There is also an intermittent triple chime and a visual warning of "trailer disconnected" when the brakes are released. When first connecting the trailer 7-way, the #5 pin has power. However if you turn the vehicle off and restart the truck without first disconnecting the 7-way, the #5 pin will not have power and the trailer does not have any brakes. In order to correct this, you need to leave the vehicle running, exit and disconnect and reconnect the 7-way. There are no fuses blown. The wire has continuity from the trailer brake control module to the 7-way connector in both the bed and bumper locations. There is no corrosion on the terminal ends of the wires or the 7-way connector. Di-electric grease remains on pins/connector. Seekins Ford (dealership) replaced the trailer brake control module on 14 November, 2024. I asked them to look into recall 22v193, but there was nothing about it on the repair order and the service writer didn't know. Though the module was replaced, the problem persists. I took the trailer a 2024 diamond c f-max 212 with electric over hydraulic brakes to a servicing dealer who verified the brake system nominal. I connected the trailer to 3 other vehicles to verify the brakes operate. A 2023 tacoma, 2006 f-250, and a kubota farm tractor. The trailer brakes operated on all vehicles. I have deadlined the truck from pulling a trailer until this problem is resolved.
On several occasions, a vehicle cut off our truck so driver had to slam on brakes. Brakes locked up and would not release and truck would not move. Driver had to turn off the truck, set and release the parking brake before they would release and allow him to move the truck. Put truck in brake shop (sw brake and alignment) and they replaced brakes lines, master cylinder, hydraboost and sensor and the problem is still not fixed and the shop mechanics are still able to reproduce this locking up and not releasing issue after having our truck for more than a month. They are putting our old parts back on and releasing the truck back to us because they cannot figure out how to fix this issue. This is a safety issue for driver and others on the roadway if truck is stuck and not able to be moved out of the roadway to safety while the truck is immobile.

Vehicle does not remember its previous settings: the following features may or may not be on, even if you have actively went through and turned them off or on. Local dealership has had this truck over 4 times and for days at a time. Nothing has been resolved of these safety functions. Rear automatic emergency braking engine brake lane departure warning (which actually jerks steering wheel if it is on and you get close to the edge of the lane) lane centering assistance these safety sensitive functions turn themselves on and off, no matter the amount of computer updates through the dealer. Dealer has not been able to resolve this issue and the technician has not been able to get Ford to give her any answers as well.
Connected to 5th wheel, intermittently the brakes would "buck" and "grab" when braking. Message to the effect of braking wire malfunction.
Towing 18,000 trailer and truck disconnects trailer breaks. This is risking somebodies life… if this is an active recall why arent we being notified about it when we are purchasing a brand new truck to haul. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
2022 f450 king ranch will not recognize an electric over hydraulic brake system on the trailer. It will recognize it if you connect while running. Once you shut the engine off and turn it back on it disconnects and will not recognize the trailer until you get out and go back to the plug and unplug and plug it in again. The 2021 f450 will work with the trailer. The dealer tried hooking up (4) different 2022 f series and they all did the same thing. Have been emailing every email address I can get ahold of at Ford. Field service engineer came out on 6/8 and he cannot figure out the issue. This truck was taken in after the brake controller recall on 4/18/22. First attempt updated software on 4/20/22. Supposed to fix. Still not fixed as of 6/13/22. Also had our 2021 gator trailer inspected for any issues. There were none. The fact that hardy Ford hooked up 2022 f150, f250, f450 to the trailer and none of them would recognize and electric over hydraulic brake trailer system.
The trailer brakes fail after a random period of time. Though the trailer works fine with other controllers, the entire trailer was rewired with new brakes and a new 7-pin connector, the problem did not changed - there are no shorts, grounds, opens in the brake circuit, and the ground circuit is ok. There previously were and are no intermittent problems with the trailer. The trailer brakes will start off the trip working, but stop working at random times. I've often noticed that they'll fail shortly after sitting in traffic. After the failure, I remove and reinstall fuse #62 in the under hood fuse box, and the trailer brake operation will be restored for a while. Being aware of this problem, and the dealers being no help (this is a common topic on groups and forums), I regularly manually test trailer brake operation, especially before descending a hill, but sometimes even shortly after confirming proper operation, the trailer brakes will not work. After the failure, I will pull over, then again confirm that they're not working, then r&r the fuse without disturbing any other circuits or connectors, and the trailer brakes will resume operation. Turning the truck off and on does not fix the problem even temporarily. I experience this problem about every hundred miles or so of driving. The truck currently has about 2,500 miles, but the problem was noticed at about 1,100 miles during the first tow. I'd estimate I've experienced the trailer brake failure about seven times.
Truck was pulling my 16k 5th wheel camper over the passes between montana and idaho in tow haul mode up and down. These are only 4,200 foot passes but steep. Usually in 6th gear but sometimes 4th going 50-55; oil temps show as 220 to 239 then the big fan kicks in to cool it. On one of the smaller passes, shortly after I crested the hill the truck sharply down shifted (I think it skipped 4th and went into 3rd. Immediately thereafter the "check engine" light came on, ¿tool emblem showed on dash, "low power" notice showed on dash, and I barely had time to get halfway off the road before I lost power steering and brakes. This could have been a horrific disaster on just about any other interstate highway location, let alone two lane roads that we have been with our truck/trailer. As it was, it was one very scary ten seconds. I had no power steering or brakes. Later I learned that if it happens again that I should keep it above 5 mph to get off road and lined up, then stomp on brakes because you only have one chance. On the side of the road, "¿check engine" light is red, but no other warning lights now. I can get no revs out of engine. I turn off key and shut down. Check fluids underneath, and under hood all is well. Try phone - no coverage. Closest town is 16 miles. Restart engine after 5 minutes. It was about 60 outside at the top of the pass, and I can now rev engine, but engine light is on. Head to town, get cell coverage on next rise and call ahead to nearest Ford dealer for directions. Another pass is between us - 4th of July, a taller one than the shutdown event. Idaho dealer (jim merriman, lake city Ford) kindly squeezes me in. See engine light on. Tech scott sees light and runs scan and sees no record of any codes in any systems. What the?? next morning, Ford told dealer that there is no way that a code did not register if the light was on,.

The a/c compressor just went out for the second time and from what it looks to me is why the second failure has occurred is because the dealership did not replace the condenser as was required and also paid for by me. The truck has the "death-wobble" even though I have reinforced the steering in general and is very dangerous. However, due to just these two issues and the others it has had which are failed water pump, turbo, starter and hydro-boost brake booster with the water pump going out at about 50,000 miles and then the turbo at about 82,000 miles with the work performed at two different Ford dealerships at a very poor quality I replaced the starter myself and the hydro-boost. You cannot trust a dealership when the worked performed is at best no better than what I can perform. Just like right now or for quite a long time it has had the two field service action items being numbers: 15m02 and 18m01 and after reading the horror stories about and or after a dealership has performed these two functions on other such person(s) vehicles, I most likely will not let a dealership touch mine.

Intermittently when applying the brakes, the brake pedal felt spongy/soft. Although the vehicle would stop, the brake pedal was not feeling hard as it should and may cause a lose of braking if this condition continues on. The vehicle has been to the dealer. The dealer informed the consumer that the condition was a normal characteristic of this vehicle.

I travel for work and drive many different types of rental cars. I have had the following occur in more models than I can remember. Vehicle accelerates when you apply the brakes. Root cause: the elevation / spacing relationship between the brake pedal and the accelerator. Operator error contributes to the problem also. People have a tendencie to roll their foot from the gas pedal to the right hand side of the brake pedal. Depending on the angle of their foot, the edge of thier shoe will hang over the gas pedal. When they apply the brake they also apply the gas. The engine torq over comes the brake friction and the car accelerates. Most of the time when this happens I can remove my foot, relocate it on the brake pedal and safely stop. Several times my situation required me to hold the brake / gas pedals in position and quickly use my left foot to apply the brake to prevent an accident. Wearing my heavy boots with a large sole increases the frequences of these incidents.

The drivers seat belt disengaged, causing the consumer to drive with the seat belt unlocked. The seat belt was repaired three times and failed three times(ongoing problem), the brake problem was repaired three times and failed three times, the front/rear brakes would not disengage on repeated occasions the problem continued, the front and rear tires would shake and or vibrate which was due to a tire defect per dealer. There were flat spots on the tires. (the tires were sold with the vehicle) continental/general.
