1 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 10/22/2020

Transmission has very hard and delayed upshift and downshift making it difficult to control speed when accelerating and decelerating. Rpm gets stuck around 3000 at lower speeds and upon engaging into gear has made my tires squawk with a sudden lunge in speed and same problem when trying to stop, the car lunges forward. It acts as though it is in neutral but then when it engages into gear sudden changes in speed occur causing rapid acceleration or deceleration. The problem gets worse after the car is up to normal operating temperature. It doesn't occur as often at colder operating temperature. This problem makes it difficult to get back up to safe highway speeds after having to stop for traffic or red lights as well as hard to get up to speed to safely merge into traffic from an on ramp. As far as "when" this happened it is every day as I drive daily.

2 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

I purchased my car 7/31/2012 with 113,000 miles. I received notification of a recall for the rpm surge in 2013. Concerned, I took my car to the dealership and was told since I didn't have any problems and hadn't reached the 150,000 mile limit, then I didnt need to worry about repairs for the time being. I then asked what would happen if I surpassed the mile limit and the problem surfaced. The mechanic informed me that as long as a recall ever existed, then Ford would always be responsible for the repairs. Not satisfied with that response, (because there would not be a 10 yr /150,000 limit in the letter) I questioned the manager who confirmed the tech's answer. In 2014 I relocated to lancaster CA. I too have had numerous dangerous close calls with the sudden acceleration while breaking; one being in a school parking lot in high temperatures. I took my car to the dealership 5/2016 and just as expected, they wont repair my car without cost. This is wrong and very dangerous and hopefully you guys will decide to do something about this for the many people still experiencing problems.

7 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 08/08/2012

On hot days, when backing out of parking spaces, the car has sometimes "surged" meaning that there has been unintended acceleration without the accelerator being pressed at all. I have had to suddenly and firmly put my foot on the brake to prevent the car from hitting other vehicles. This has happened on several occasions in August of 2012. I own a 2006 Ford Five Hundred also and it has had the same problem in the same conditions (filing separate complaint).

8 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

In multiple incidents, on hot summer days, the car has suddenly accelerated (with no foot on the accelerator) when backing out of parking spaces and sometimes when put into drive right after the sudden acceleration in reverse. It has required rapid, firm braking to prevent the car from hitting other vehicles. About a week after the problem started with this car, it started to happen occasionally with my other Ford Five Hundred (a 2005 model with a little less mileage). A separate complaint has been filed on that vehicle. Research online has revealed that hundreds of Ford Five Hundred owners have reported this issue and that the throttle body is the likely culprit.

9 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 06/12/2012

The vehicle has unintended acceleration issues. There was an investigation by the nhsta but nothing came of it. The car still accelerates on its own when I pull into parking spaces or leaving parking spaces. I have to keep my foot on or by the brake pedal as to not hit other cars or people. Having the air conditioning on seems to worsen this problem substantially. It is completely random and I know I'm not the only person that has experienced this issue. Please reopen your investigation and make sure you have both the ac on and off. It's mainly when it is on, but still completely random. I don't know how people and property haven't been injured or damaged as a direct result of this well known issue.

Engine surged unexpectedly causing temporary loss of control. This has been happening occasionally for several weeks while in drive at idle or when shifting into drive. 11 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 01/13/2012

Driving in town, at approx 25mph. Car jerked/lurched suddently, then entered limp home mode. Pulled over, turned off car. Restarted and check engine light came on. Turns out it is a throttle body failure. Shop says this is a very dangerous situation - the car could suddenly accelerate/decelerate without notice. Looking at online forums - it seem a fairly common failure, and something Ford should issue a safety recall on.

14 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2006 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 10/19/2011

Ford 500 lurches severely at random times while the engine is engaged. This happens most dangerously at high speeds, due to driver's inability to control vehicle adequately to defend against potential crashes or control speed during turns. This has caused problems on the snow and ice here in alaska because uncontrolled acceleration reduces traction. Also occurs at low speeds, which is more easily controlled through braking, but requires extreme caution if engaging vehicle when pedestrians or other vehicles are near. It has surprised and scared me on many occasions since I first purchased this car a month ago, but the reason I am writing this is because I had a scary incident today when pulling out of a grocery store parking lot (pedestrians in front of me when it suddenly jumped as soon as engine engaged). Took it to the mechanic and diagnostic check says issues with fuel delivery system. The mechanic stated that after researching the issue this is a very common problem for this model and that it is most likely the throttle body, and says the car should not be driven in its condition. It is one of the scariest issues I've ever had to deal with. After reading more about it on the internet this evening it seems that this issue is very common and hundreds of people have had similar scary incidents with this car that they have reported online. If this many people are writing about it online, presumably there are thousands more who are having the same problem and do not have the resources or know how to report the issue.

26 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Failure Date: 07/06/2010

Ford Five Hundred lunged dramatically as I attempted to make a right turn from a stopped position. I immediately attempted to brake in order to slow the car down and yield to a pedestrian that had begun to cross the street. It took an extreme amount of pressure on the brake pedal in order to fight engine's acceleration and stop the car. Upon removing my foot from the brake, the car attempted to re-accelerate hard again, scaring the pedestrian enough that they waved me through and refused to cross until I passed by. The next day, while parking the car in a public garage, the car suddenly lurched forward very hard, again requiring maximum effort to prevent accelerating. This time I was headed into a concrete wall and stopped 2 inches short. For the first time, car entered failsafe mode and presented a check engine light (this light had not been previously presented). Dealer informs me computer reports codes of p610b and p2106. They want to replace the throttle body assembly and reprogram the pcm. While I had experienced the sudden acceleration issue intermittently over the years; I never got resolution (unable to recreate the problem) and had never received a check engine light with this code before. Investigating this very expensive repair has led me to discover that my experience is not unique and is a recurring issue for this vehicle. Further, the costly repair being recommended appears to be a stop-gap fix at best with no certainty of actually fixing the problem.

Failure Date: 01/10/2008

Purchased a new Ford Five Hundred in 2007. Have kept up with all regular maintenance. After putting about 20,000 miles on the vehicle, I started having a problem with sudden acceleration. I would come to a stop at an intersection, mailbox, or drive-thru and let my foot off the brakes and the car would "jump" -- accelerate on its own. My foot would not even be on the gas pedal. I took it to the Ford dealership and was told that the transmission had to be "reprogrammed". I specifically asked could it be a problem with fuel system and was told no. I had the work completed but the problem persists to this day. I have had several near misses with rear end collisions. Finally as I was entering a parking space, the car accelerated on its own and hit a post in front of the parking space.
