In August 2010, I had the continuously variable transmission replaced at ~98,000 miles. Luckily, it was under warranty. Now in October 2012, the second transmission as the service member said at the Ford dealership "the transmission exploded, we're not even sure how you were able to drive this vehicle. This was at ~146,000 miles, but there is only ~48,000 miles on the transmission itself. Two transmissions have failed in this vehicle. Searching the internet I have come across several instances of the Ford Five Hundreds continuously variable transmission failing. I called the Ford care line to report it, but they claim they are unaware of any issues. My concern is this third transmission will also fail at some point.
I had the need to avoid an accident by suddenly changing lanes but when I step on the gas pedal my transmission failed to shift to higher speed. Instead two clunking sounds took place before finally switching into higher gear . I was able to avoid the car in front of me , but now the car behind me almost rear ended us. This would have created a fatal chain reaction we could have been crushed in. I found out this cars have a great amount of failures on record Ford 500 2005 please help.
Transmission failure, sudden loss of power. If you let the vehicle set or turn the vehicle off, sometimes you can regain some power to move forward but when you slow down and then try to increase your speed the vehicle will come to a complete stop.

Just purchased a 2005 Five Hundred with 32000 miles and had to bring back to dealer for transmission up-down hard shifting. They said they had to flash w/new software. Picked up and did not notice any difference, still hard shifting. Have 10 days left on my 60 day warranty. Will bring back to dealer for diagnostics. Sounds to me that a huge amount of loyal Ford customers are having a huge problem with the this transmission. I suppose I will have an transmission failure soon to come. Why in gods name is nobody doing something about this problem. I also had to have my driver heated seat pads replaced because of failure.
Engine idle speed is excessive at intermittent intervals while transmission is in reverse, causes vehicle to inadvertently accelerate at inappropriate speeds. Local repair shop scanned vehicles repair codes, determined it to be a transmission failure. Authorized dealership, said nothing was wrong with the vehicle after they scanned it. Vehicle, went into a "creep mode" immediately following one of the instances, but the computer reset itself after several minutes.
