Traveling along the interstate at regular speed, the engine began to overheat. A leak from the water pump occurred and flooded the engine and oil reservoir causing the vehicle to immediately smoke and overheat. After allowing the vehicle to sit and cool down so not to start a fire when the hood is lifted, the damage to the engine took place. The head gasket blew and antifreeze mixed in with the motor oil.
Low engine oil pressure light flashes with oil smell and squeaking pulley that holds serpentine belt. Burning oil smell, dealer replaced oil sending unit, water pump and replaced valve cover gaskets.

2010 Ford Flex with duratec 3. 5l engine - sudden water pump failure causes coolant to flood the engine, which can cause the engine to overheat and cut off while driving, without warning. This happened to me while driving to work. Luckily I was able to pull off the road safely. There are many others with this engine who have had this problem, because the water pump is inside the engine-- see e. G. . Read more...
On 09/18/19, I was driving home when I heard a knocking sound - like rocks kicking up under my car. I was driving about 20-25 mph on a neighborhood street. I decided to slow down and then realized that the car was slowing down for me. I tried to pull over to the side and my steering was locked. I received no warning lights and my car temperature remained the same - between cold and hot. After going to the repair shop, it was determined that the water pump overheated which caused the coolant to mix with the oil. The engine was damaged beyond repair. I am thankful that I was in my neighborhood when this happened and not a freeway. The car has 94,000 miles on it and I am the original owner.
Water pump failure led to total engine loss. Reported on multiple Ford vehicles.
Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Ford Flex. The contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the contact heard a pop noise coming from the vehicle and the air conditioning began to blow hot air. The contact also noticed that the vehicle began to lose power, while the vehicle began losing power, the vehicle began to overheat and the check engine warning began to illuminate. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to a dealer(ken garff west valley Ford 4091 w 3500 s, west valley city, ut 84120 801- 559-0314) where she left the vehicle there to be diagnosed. The contact was later informed by the dealer that he water pump had failed which caused the vehicle to overheat. The contact informed her that her entire engine was ruined due to this failure and was given an estimate of $8,000 to replace the engine. The manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 178,000. Jo.
Water pump leaking into engine oil, what should be a $500 at most repair is good to require replacement of the engine because of poor water pump design.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Flex. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle would overheat. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the water pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified, but was not able to assist. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 98,000.
Water pump, engine. All of a sudden out of the blue with no indications, warning, leaks, stalls, rough driving, no starts, lights or smells; sent to start car and it was making a metal grinding/rattling sound and would not start. I had it towed over to the Ford dealer and 2 days later they looked at it. They stated the water pump catastrophically failed, leaked into the oil pan, overfilled the oil pan and cause coolant/water to be circulated through engine causing no compression and seizing the engine. The dealership said it would have happened pretty quick. I am now in need of a new engine because of the water pump design flaw of Fords water pump emptying into the oil pan. Ford customer service says there is no recall or complaints in the NHTSA database so it is not a problem. But I have gone online and seen this exact complaint from people in many forums, on multiple models. This catastrophic water pump failure and design flaw has been going on for 11 years and Ford refuses to do anything about or to help the customer. This is not getting reported correctly or in the right place or simply service centers dont report to this database therefore Ford closes thier eyes to problems. I am just glad this did not happen to my wife on her trip to michigan at night on the weekend with kids in the car. It must be an issue if I can find class action lawsuits on thei exact issue. Hold Ford responsible, they are going to kill someone or their families.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Flex. While driving approximately 25 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to evergreen Ford Lincoln (1500 18th avenue NW, assaquah, wa 98027) where it was diagnosed that the timing belt was stretched. Since the timing belt was directly linked to the water pump, a new engine was recommended. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000. The VIN was unknown.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Flex. While the vehicle was at a stop, the engine idled roughly and the service engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that an oil change was required. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure continued. On another occasion, the engine sputtered violently, causing the contact a delayed return home. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic who stated that they found coolant in the oil and the engine had a blown head gasket. The independent mechanic recommended a new engine. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer (planet Ford, 20403 interstate 45 n, spring, TX 77388, (888) 471-0592) where it was diagnosed that the water pump failed and a new engine was needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and confirmed that there were no recalls. The failure mileage was 90,000. The VIN was unknown.
The engine shut down during a long-distance drive returning from a vacation. The car was towed to a Ford dealership. The techs at the dealership determined that the engine failed due to a faulty (leaking) water pump. This water pump is inside the engine block. Thus, the leak caused corruption of other parts of the engine and complete engine failure. This problem with the internal water pump has been the subject of a recall for other Ford models, but not the Ford Flex. The national database of automotive technicians, identifix, reports leaking internal water pumps to be the number 1 problem with the Flex. Here are the specifics of what happened: we had been driving for approximately 6 hours. I was at cruising speed of 75 mph. As I approached lubbock TX, the temperature warning light came on and the temperature gauge had pegged all the way to 'hot'. I reduced speed and drove to the next exit (approximately 1-2 min away). As I exited the freeway, the engine light came on, and moments later the battery light came on. At that point, I lost power steering and the engine shut down. We were able to push the car into a parking lot on the frontage road. This incident is consistent with the claims that have led to the safety recall for other Ford models:escape suvs from the 2014 model year, plus the 2014 and 2015 compact fiesta st, the 2013 and 2014 fusion midsize car and the 2013 through 2015 transit connect small van (obtained from USA today, 1/3/2018). My insurance will not cover the damage which has resulted in the car being "totalled". This is a known problem for Ford, and I believe my car should be covered under the recently announced safety recall. . Read more...
Car has meticulous service record, I had 86k miles on car. The car would not start towed to dealership. The ceramic water pump exploded, causing coolent to mix with oil. Now I need new engine $8,000. I have used same dealership for car maintenance for last 7 years.
Vehicle was turning off of a state highway into a school entrance. Without warning (no warning lights on dash) engine stopped running. Due to engine shut down all auxiliary systems lost power. Vehicle was making a left turn into a school entrance when engine turned off. In the middle of the turn the loss of power steering and power brakes made negotiating the turn unsafe. The operator was unable to keep the vehicle on the paved entrance and ended up off the should and into the grass. Fortunately there were no pedestrians or obstacles. Failure could cause a safety issue at highway speed due to potential for rear ending due to loss of power. This engine failure is due to Ford 3. 5 duratec internal water pump design. When the water pump seals fail, all coolant is contained in the motor and collected in the oil pan. By collecting the coolant in the oil pan it caused a p0016 code and the engine to shut off. Their was no warning of this. The car was driven 3. 5hrs the previous day with no issues or warning lights. Ford is unwilling to recognize the problem. I filed claims with Ford customer service #11792792 and cas-11876774 on this issue. Repair bill was $4100 to replace the motor with a similar used motor. The vehicle repair was just completed yesterday and I still feel unsafe and uncomfortable knowing the same potential for engine failure exists. It is both a safety concern and an financial concern. Their are many documented cases of this happening on Fordflex. Net (15 cases) also on Fordtaurus. Net. Please google duratec 3. 5 water pump failure. These forums document other NHTSA claims filed for exact reasons.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Flex. While driving 30 mph, the water pump failed and caused the timing belt to fracture. The failure caused the pistons in the engine to bend the engine valve. The vehicle stalled and was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 79,000.
