Yesterday I noticed that my steering seemed a little hard to keep going straight. Today when I got in and started driving my car flashed a "steering failure get checked" message and was even harder to drive. I made it to my appointment and when I left 30 minutes later and turned my car on I had a new message, "steering loss stop safely". Now I can't even move my steering wheel. Luckily I wasn't on the expressway going 70 mph when this happened.
Three separate incidents. All three incidents happened while first starting vehicle, putting vehicle in reverse, and then the steering wheel locks up and a steering assist failure warning comes on. Steering wheel will not move. Had to pull back in to parking spot and turn car off. Upon turning the vehicle back on, the steering wheel is back to normal and the warning is gone. Terrible vehicle. Feel unsafe driving my child in it. Never will buy another Ford ever again.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. The contact called on behalf of the driver. While driving at an unknown speed, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was able to be coasted to the side of the road and was towed to a tow lot. The vehicle was later taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering computer system failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that no recall was associated with the VIN. The approximate failure mileage was 51,000. The VIN was not available.
Steering failed while driving home from work on the I 4 a road where the speed limit varies from 65 to 70 miles an hour. Not a great time to not be able to control of your car made it home but the car is to difficult to drive. And now I find out Ford knew this was issue since 2013!.

After being stalled in traffic for over an hour I pulled into a gas station and started my vehicle to leave. Immediately I could feel something wrong with my steering and my alert popped on and said peer steering assist warning. Called dealership and they said it's a common for the electric component to fail after idling. They said that's this has happened to people as they are driving. Steering just fails. They said it was a fuse that overheats after idling for so long without warning. If this is a component that fails that affects steering it needs to be fixed and changed.
Steering completely failed twice, once in traffic. This posed a significant safety risk to the general public and the vehicle. Failure caused significant contact with curb on roadside. Speed was app. 35 mph. Occurred on highway 100 in milwaukee county, WI. Second failure happened shortly after Ford dealer reprogramed steering system due to intermittent steering failures. During this instance steering failed when car was started (this happened just prior to the most significant issue which was the steering failure in traffic). Car was less than 1,000 miles out of warranty thus causing significant out of pocket repairs costs.
After going through a bump on a residential street at 30 mph the steering became very difficult to control the car. I was less than one mile from home and managed with great difficulty to make it to my home. Complete steering failure, there is no way to drive the car. Very glad it was me driving and not my daughter as this happened in a curve. The car has 43,000 miles on it. Over 600 complaints about this electronic power steering system and since it is out of warranty the repairs are expected to be at least $2,000. What is NHTSA doing about this problem. It is pretty obvious to me there is a problem and an emergency recall needs to be issued. Ford and it's local dealers are unwilling to address the problem. What's going to take NHTSA! to get this problem fixed.

While pulling over to the side of the road the power steering stopped working. An alarm chimed but no information displayed. I was only able to steer the vehicle using all of my strength and my husband had to drive it home. The next day the steering was back to normal. The second time was during a k turn. It was incredibly difficult to maneuver out of the turn but once the vehicle was driving straight the steering returned. No alarm or information displayed. The third time was turning out of a parking lot. An alarm chimed and "steering assist failure" displayed. Fortunately I was close to a dealership and able to steer it there as I would not have had the strength to steer it home through town and would not have wanted to risk trying it on the interstate. I'm waiting to find out what they will say. I have already had to have the transmission replaced due to hesitation of acceleration when the gas is pressed.
