Van suddenly lost transmission power when accelerating. No warning lights, no nothing. Turned a corner accelerated and then slowly slowed to complete stop. No gears not even reverse. Van has run rough in rain for a while. Have had it tuned up to no avail. Narrowly avoided being rear ended when this happened.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. She attempted to accelerate from a stop sign but the vehicle hesitated momentarily before accelerating. The vehicle picked up speed to approximately 45 mph when and began to lunge forward. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the transmission was replaced. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the computer system was repaired. The failure continued to occur after the vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileages were 129,000. The VIN was unavailable. Updated 01/11/lj.
While driving in a residential area our 2004 Ford Freestar the vehicle suddenly lost all driver power. I had to coast to a safe spot on the side of the road. The vehicle could not be put into any gear and had to be towed. We are facing a $3200. 00 repair bill to have the transmission replaced. The vehicle has been well maintained and had less than 80,000 miles logged. The vehicle had recently been in for the 70,000 mile check-up, at which no problems were detected.
On September 29, 2010, I was driving with my wife and three children on I-75 at 70 mph (speed limit). There was a slight rev in the engine and then all power to the wheels was gone, leaving me in the middle lane of very heavy and fast moving traffic. We barely avoided getting rear ended by a large semi and feel fortunate that I was able to make it to the side of the road, both myself and my wife were terrified for the safety of our children. Being far away from home, stranded in unfamiliar territory we were at the mercy of the tow truck driver and the local mechanic. Upon inspecting the vehicle the mechanic stated the transmission was gone and that this was a very common problem with this vehicle and it would cost $3,000 to fix. Many hours later, after finally getting my tired and weary family home, I researched this problem on line and was absolutely appalled to see so many complaints and the fact no action has been taken by Ford or the NHTSA to correct or even communicate this problem to the consumers unlucky enough to own this vehicle. I seriously can not believe that so many people have been put in this extremely dangerous situation and nothing in being done, has the importance of human life become that insignificant?.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. The contact was unable to shift the vehicle in reverse or put it in drive. The vehicle would not respond. The dealer was informed of the failure and they advised the contact to replace the transmission. The vehicle was repaired at owners expense. The failure and current mileage was 72,516. Updated 12/29/10 updated 01/04/jb.
Bought 2004 Freestar used and have had it for almost 2 years with no problems. While traveling, I stopped at an intersection. Upon acceleration, the van went about 10 yards and failed to go any further. I had to coast across oncoming traffic into the convenience store parking lot where the van has sat overnight. The van will have to be towed to my mechanic's shop. There are numerous posts regarding this same complaint. When is Ford going to do a recall!!!! this is absolutely ridiculous. It is time for Ford to step up and correct this before somebody gets killed and they really have a lawsuit on their hands!.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. The contact stated while driving at 45mph he attempted to pass a vehicle and his vehicle didnt moved forward, instead it reversed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The diagnostic test located the failure at the transmission. The dealer advised they could replace some parts on the transmission, the valve body, the pump shaft, and the converter, or replace the entire transmission. The transmission will be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted, they advised the contact he will received a call back from an engineer. The failure and the current mileage were 76,634.
Put van into reverse and backed up but then when I put into drive, it would not engage. Took van in for repair - required transmission rebuilding.
We were driving on the highway when our 2004 Ford Freestar died. Fortunatley we were able to get to the side of the road before the car stopped coasting, but my wife and I and ou4 4 young children were stranded on the side of a very busy highway for 45 minutes. I was told the transmission is shot and it would cost 3,000 to repair. Myu brother-in-law is a mecahnic and said this is an ongoing problem with the Freestar for some time. Why no recall then?transmission.
While on interstate hwy, transmission gave out. Luckily I was in the right lane of three lane interstate. Had to have transmission replaced.
2004 Ford Freestar transmission just died while driving on the highway at 60 mph. There was no warning. The vehicle is currently in the mechanic shop being repaired. This occurred in new york city.
While driving on the highway the engine rpm raised and the vehicle lost power. After getting to the side of the road the vehicle had no transmission engagement. No reverse and no forward gears. Everything happened all of a sudden and without any warning.
Transmission is starting to slip. I read thousands and thousands of complaints regarding this car and transmission problems, yet Ford refused to take any responsibility.
2004 Ford Freestar 4. 2 engine. Traveling down the highway with the kids in the car no response to the accelerator, I was passing a truck which almost took me and the kids completely off the road due to the power loss. The truck driver stopped to help and knew there was something wrong. The transmission went out engine running great, but no torque. No drive, reverse nothing but a winning sound. The vehicle is at 79,000 miles. Have not got it fixed yet due to finance. Truck driver said he had a Freestar that did the same thing. When I went online to see if other people had the same problem I read for hours. If so many people have the same problem there should be a recall. Staff sergeant us army active duty.
I had just pulled up to a traffic light. When the light changed, I tried to go but all the engine did was rev up. I had no warning that it quit. I put the shift lever in all the gears, but nothing happened. It is being towed home as I type this. It only has 75,000 miles on it, with regular service that is required.
While driving home from a family wedding at 10:00 at night, in the pouring rain, on a dark, busy main road, the transmission of my 2004 Ford Freestar gave out with no warning. This left us, with our two year old stranded at the side of the road until help came. I am just glad we were not on the highway traveling at 65 mph as we had been moments before this happened. After doing some research on this, I am disgusted at the number of people that the same exact thing has happened to. Even once I get this van fixed (which will not be right away because we have two children and cannot afford to fix it right now, yet we will have to continue to make payments on a van we can't drive) I will never feel safe again. If this is a known problem, which, from what I understand the NHTSA is investigating, it needs to be rectified now!.
I purchased a used 2004 Ford Freestar in February of 2010. The van ran fine for the first 90 days. As soon as it hit 100 days, my check engine light went on and the van has been repair 3 times since then, misfired cylinder, replaced fuel injector. Now the mechanic told me that the transmisson needs to be replace and this will cost more that the van is worth. I know that I am not the only Freestar owner to have such problems and cannot believe foord has not taken steps to rectify these issues. I will never purchase a Ford vehicle again.
2004 Ford Freestar sudden loss of power while pulling into traffic. Appears to be related to power train failure. Car would not move forward or backward under its own power after the failure although the engine continued to run.
2004 Ford Freestar. The transmission just went out all of a sudden. I was driving down the road and all of a sudden the gas wouldn't move the car, it just kept revving up. This is the first problem ever and I love my car, but this is ridiculous.
2004 Ford Freestar. Going down the road and the van ran fine but could not go any more. Had to get towed and find it is the transmission and will be at least 1600 dollars to fix. No warning or slipping or anything and I see on the forums that Ford is having way too much trouble with these vans. What are we to do for there problem. It is crippling families like ours with big bills.
While driving on busy highway rt 76 near akron ohio my 2004 Ford Freestar which only had 79,279 miles began losing speed and black smoke was coming out the back and engulfed the entire van which had my 2 children and wife in. We managed to pull off to the side of highway and called for tow , we had to replace the transmission at a cost of $3,002. 07 dollars and wait a week for repair to bec completed. I had van at preston Ford dealership in sharon PA previously because transaxle light would sometimes come on after driving more than 20 miles but it would go off after turned off and restarted. Dealership was not able to determine the cause.
Bought van with 68000 miles and a week later with 68500 miles the vehicle lost power while driving with no warning. . . Had to replace transmission $2900. 00. . . . . . . I would like all of that back. . . . And so would everyone else that has had this happen to them. . . . Thanks.
My Ford Freestar 2004 suddenly stopped as I was driving. The car was revving but car seemed to be in neutral. Luckily I was driving slow on a quiet suburban street when it occurred and I was able to pull into a side street. Obviously, I was very shaken up. I called the Ford service center, but instead of acknowledging that this is an incident that they have been aware of, they told me that I should get it towed into service and get a diagnostic for $115. 00. Then he told me that most likely I needed a new transmission for anywhere between $3000 - 4000. The guys from Ford were not only playing dumb, but were also trying to take advantage of their defective transmission by making even more money. No wonder they were the only car manufacturer that didn't ask for a government loan. They just steal what they need from the consumer. How easy is that. Now I want to know how Smart they would be if indeed someone died from this deficiency. Perhaps mr. Ford would like to call mr. Toyota to ask for some advice in advance. With all the complaints just on this one site, this is proof that they have been ignoring this problem. They are well aware of the situation. This makes for more evidence when there is a class action lawsuit.
The transmission just gave out. No prior symptoms or warning. I was driving with my foot on the gas and the car felt like it went into neutral. Good thing I wasn't on the highway because what is more dangerous than the brake not working is the gas not working when you are going on the highway.
I own a 2004 Ford Freestar. Without warning or any other previous problems, the transmission stopped working and would not respond in any gear. The vehicle continues to not respond and subsequently had to be towed to a garage. Currently, the Ford garage (purvis Ford, fredericksburg va) has the vehicle and they are telling me that they need to break open the case to investigate further. There are no outer signs of the problem.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. While driving at approximately 35 mph, the contact attempted to depress the accelerator pedal when the vehicle stalled; however, the engine was still on. The vehicle was taken to a local service station where the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 72,000.
Pulling into parking lot and transmission went out. Only has 89,000 miles on it. Had to be rebuilt. Cost 1897. 70 to fix. 2004 Ford Freestar.
I experienced a sudden loss of power after accelerating from a stop light on the morning. I coasted to the side of the road, called my husband, did I mention it was 445 am, he came and towed me out of the way of traffic and had it towed to lithia Ford dealership when they opened. We were told by the service adviser that a new transmission is needed, but they couldn't take it apart because to warranty company would not allow it.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Freestar. The contact was driving approximately 35 mph. The accelerator pedal was engaged, followed by a delay in the response time. The vehicle has not been diagnosed at this time. The current and failure mileages were 105,000.
I have a 2004 Ford Freestar. We keep it up properly with all the oil changes and such. On March the 3rd I went to pull away as the light turned green, I barely got into the middle of the road when the van suddenly lost all power. The motor was running but the van would not move. Thank god I did not get hit. We had it taken to the repair shop. They don't know whats wrong with it, no lights or warnings came on but it had to have a new transmission.
My husband and I just purchased a 2004 Ford Freestar. Granted it is used with 94,000 miles, but we had it for exactly one week and the transmission went out as my husband, myself and our four children were going 70 mph down an interstate. No warnings or anything. . . . Lord only knows how much its going to cost to replace and no money to really fix it. We were traveling down interstate 71 in ohio going to my father's. I had the cruise control set and hit the accelerator button on the steering wheel to speed up a bit. Once I did that, my rpm's shot up and I lost "control". I turned off my cruise control but was unable to accelerate using the gas pedal.
I bought a 2004 Ford Freestar van and three weeks after I bought it while driving down the road I went to accelerate and the van just revved, come to find out the transmission has went out and now we have been without a car since February of 2010 and we have three small children and I wish there was something that could be done about this defect in the van.
Vehicle driving normally, speeds up to 60mph. Stopped at traffic signal. At green, began to accelerate -- vehicle reaches almost 30mph when the engine revs and the vehicle ceases to engage in a forward motion. The vehicle was able to coast onto the shoulder and barely into a parking lot. No sign of problem, nothing to indicate the vehicle would cease moving. Towed to Ford repair. Result was a complete rebuild of the transmission. Though no one was hurt (amazing for end-of-day rush traffic) it might have been quite the opposite as the next day I was to travel on major highways. I am still shuddering at the idea this could happen at anytime without any warning - perhaps with my 4 children in the car while passing a semi-truck on the highway. As it is, we are without our family vehicle. At this time it appears we will be without the vehicle for perhaps 2 - 3 weeks.
I have a 2004 Ford Freestar. I recently had my transmission replaced at 89,900 miles. We were on the highway at night time with an 8 year old and 7 year old when the vehicle just started stopping. There no warning lights that came on for the transmission no signs. The rpms would go high / vehicle went would barely move. It was awful.
2004 Ford free star, van was in drive but failed to move on highway. Took to shop they said it is the transmission.
