1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2022

I just purchased the vehicle used and recently discovered there was a recall on these vehicles. The vehicle I purchased keeps stalling and is not getting any power. I’ve had the vehicle checked by the car lot and they say there is nothing wrong. . The vehicle died out on me already twice while I was driving.

Torque convertor defective in similar Ford Freestar models eddy's Ford dealership sold recall vehicle as is against state & federal laws and lied to disabled veterans about replacing the defective torque converter after discovery of recall caused piston hole engine block and transmission damage cutting out near dangerous bridge intersection.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2019

Takata recall: I had the torque converter replaced, per recall in 2013 or 2014, when I lost power in my van while driving on the highway in wa state. I believe my van had about 70,000 miles at that time. I have since moved to tennessee. Yesterday, I while driving, van died at a stop sign, while moving on the street, turning a corner, and then while driving, lurching forward before dying. It would start, drive a while, then die again. I had it towed to a shop, where they say the new torque converter is "shot" and took out my transmission. It will cost me $2300-4000 to replace the transmission. Ford employee looked up my VIN # and said im not part of a "recall" for bad replacement torque converters, but how can a torque converter go bad. . . . That bad!! in 5 years. . . And 59,000 miles? my van now has 138,000 miles on it.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2017

I just purchased this vehicle today. Once I drove on the highway to get home the transaxel warring light started flashing. As I looked that up I found that there was a recall for torque converter output. As I read things I seen others had same issue and it was this that caused the issue.

5 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2017

I was driving home from my work when my van surged forward and lost all power. I was able to start it right back up, but as soon as I gave it gas, it surged forward again and lost all power. It restarted again immediately, but in my parking lot it surged and died a 3rd time. When I attempted to put it in reverse, it would not immediately move in reverse. I had to hit the gas 3 times before it would go into reverse. This also happened three times.

6 Equipment problem

2004 Ford Freestar 2fmza58274bbxxxxx Ford is charging me for the repair for the torque converter subframe 3-4 $600~$800 bushing kits ($200 each) they want to charge me. I informed them that only do the factory recall repairs the pulled my van out and told me the cant do the repairs, because they are scared of the ball joints and tie rods might break, then complained about the subframe my have to be cut to install new subframe bolts bushings etc. Just to they can continue to take the apart to replace the torque converter. The agreed to charge me 300 labor and told me to pick up the parts needed so I purchased 2 tie-rods. 2 transaxles l-r, 2 lower control arms which included ball joints. They took the subframe apart then told me I need to pay and additional $500 for a used subframe from the salvage yard. Instead of Ford just preplacing the subframe 4 bushings and bolts kits $67. 00 at park Ford 400 west avenue tallmadge ohio 44278, they want to charge me I needed to get a new subframe bolts and that the subframe is not made anymore and 3-4 $600~$800 each. Then they want to charge me $300 extra labor for cutting the frame/ and welding it back shut to install washer(bolt anchors ) then reseal it, and to uninstall the old parts and install the new parts which they have to remove to perform the factory recall repairs. So this repair is going to cost me 392. 20 for parts 300 labor, 800 subframe bushings $1492. 2 if purchase elsewhere around $26 each I am a USA disable veteran studying form cisco ccna 200-105 exam and so I can better support my adult special need daughter sherry grimes ,I am ronald lee grimes Ford had my van Friday 24th 2017 its March 1st 2017 and they are searching for ways to charge me more money. While I have to walk to my destinations.

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2015

My van suddenly went out of gear and the van lurched forward, while driving at about 35 mph. Thankfully we were in town, and not going a faster speed or on a major hwy! after coasting to a safe place, we finally managed to get it to go back into gear for a short time. After several attempts, we managed to get it home. It refuses to go into gear now and has been parked since then. I know there has been a recall on the torque converter for this make and model, and those customers have experianced the exact same symptoms as my van. This is obviously a problem with a lot more vans than originally thought and the recall needs to be extended to other VIN #s, including mine.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2015

Van will not go into reverse, power windows wont work door locks work strange. Pcm module has mosture also hard shifting while in traffic.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2015

Turns out there was a recall on the 2004 Ford Freestar in 2012 regarding the torque converter. Here it is two years later and it goes out again. This should not happen. There needs to be another recall on the torque converter and it needs to be fixed properly this time before there is a death from the incident. I had two kids under the age of 3 with me at the time and sitting in the pouring rain, in chilly weather, waiting for a ride home was not fun. Fix it Ford!!!.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2014

I was traveling on a busy road last Sunday. My van completely shut down with no warning. I had no power steering or power brakes and was almost rear-ended. Thank god I managed to get to the side of the road. I started it again and it happened again three more times. I had it towed to jim's auto service and they think it could be related to water leakage onto the computer. I called Ford to ask about this and they said that they knew nothing about this but I found information about this problem all over the internet. I asked them how could my mechanic know about this and they didn't?! they told me to take it to a Ford dealership. I am 60 years old and babysit my grandchildren full time and I am afraid to drive them in this vehicle! I also do not have the money for major repairs. I hung up with Ford feeling frustrated since this could have been a fatal situation if I had been on the highway with my granddaughter.

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2014

Car history: the transaxle light has gone before when we travel through vt mountains, but turning off the engine and letting it sit, and restarting it, the light would go off. Upon getting home safety, our mechanics didn't find anything to repair and so left it be, and would only sometimes see it when we traveled through the vt mountains, a few times a year. All recall repairs were up to date. There were no other symptoms. Incident: as we nearing the top of a mountain, the transaxle light came on. Unlike the other times, the transmission suddenly failed to be in the correct gear, so unlike the other times, we were very concerned. We pulled over immediately, and as we reached the shoulder smoke began pouring out of the vents. We quickly evacuated our kids, and as we were getting them out we noticed that there was already fire coming from under the hood, near the windshield, on the passenger side. We are so glad our kids were awake, and able to unlatch their own child carseats, and able to get out quickly. The fire spread to the entire van, consuming everything, at a great expense to us. (and others; our accident blocked a significant amount of traffic for about 3 hours. ).

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2014

The back lift gate on my 2004 Ford Freestar will not latch. The dashboard light indicates a door is open. It appears there is some rust etc in both the mechanisim and the bottom stationary latch piece.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2014

Rpm's surge, loss of power while driving, already had recalls done and still having problems, trans axle light comes on when doing highway speeds. , I think the recall needs to be on the electrical system and where the main computer is located. The main computer is right beneath the awning for the wiper assembly. . . Lots of potential water damage and many unhappy customers. This is supposed to be a family vehicle and it is more like driving a ticking time bomb. I would hate to be on the highway and the vehicle just suddenly stop. Not good Ford!!! not good!.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2014

The van won't start in the morning when left overnight. I have brought a new battery and alternator still won't start. Have to jump start the van in the morning.

Failure Date: 02/04/2014

I have a 2004 Ford Freestar that has this exact problem 13v081000. I called the dealer and since I'm in kansas they will not take care of the repairs. I have photos and this is exactly what is described in the recall. My back seat cannot lock forward. This is a safety issue. Can you please help.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2013

I was leaving my residence in my 2004 Freestar when it all of a sudden just cut off. It started right back up and shut off again, started back up drove about 100 yards shut off again. I drove it back to my house as I had barely gotten out of my drive. However to drive it back to the house I had to continually restart the vehicle. Next day got in it and it would not go in reverse and in neutral the engine idled up very high. I put it in drive it moved, put it back in reverse nothing repeated this action, heard a loud click and van went in reverse. After a few minutes it seemed to change gears sitting in the drive. I haven't driven it any where, scared to. Also we just purchased this van used 10 days ago. Dealer said bring it in has a 30 day warranty. Did I mention it rained Sunday and I didn't attempt to drive it until Wednesday and all this started. Read on this sight about all the pcm problems after rain.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

2004 Ford Freestar. Consumer wants to know if there is any information of defects on vehicle.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2013

The transmission is slipping in and out and very sluggish and no power, backfiring and smells very strong of gas fumes. Has been going on for a few weeks. I was driving on the highway and it slipped out of drive and lost power. I had to slow myself down at a pace to turn the van into a safe area off the highway I was traveling at the speed of 60. . Very scary . . . The van would not move. I had the van towed by a friend at the cost of $65. 00 (he saved me a lot of money ) which was not offered back to me from the dealership. . . . I didn't know abt the recall or the pcm problem until I was looking for info on ytube. . I called my dealer where I had bought the van( and it is paid for) when I talked with an advisor he said for me to have it towed to the dealership and they would look at it. I refused to pay for the tow (they did do that at least) he called me and said that the toque converter was under a recall and they would replace that part. . . 3 days later I went to pick the van up and it still wasn't driving right. Still loosing power and gas smell and it felt as if the transmission was slipping still. It was a Saturday and the lady helping me knew nothing couldn't even find my paperwork and had to call the advisor. She said to call him back on Monday so needless to say I tried to drive the van and it just wasn't drivable so I parked it. . Was afraid it might do more damage if I didn't. On Monday I called and spoke to the advisor and he informed me that they only did the recall part as I had requested to be done. He also said the tech told him that the van needed a lot of work. I in return ask why they didn't check out all of the problems and his answer was we did the recall and that's all we can do unless I wanted to pay $100. 00 for a diagnostic . So needless to say my van sits until I can pay or Ford does something to make this right. The ball is n your park Ford.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2013

Was going to accelerate and when I did the vehicle just stopped going, the vehicle did stay on no lights no warning I coasted to side of road. Stopped then tried to go again and the transmission would not engage. Tried all the gears and nothing would engage had to call tow truck to come get it now waiting on mechanic to tell me what is going on!.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2013

Travelling at 55 mph, vehicle suddenly lost forward motive power in traffic. Vehicle would not shift into reverse or drive. Vehicle was stalled in neutral. Had to shut off the vehicle and restart after several minutes. Drive engaged for two minutes, then lost power again. Vehicle had to be towed to Ford motor company where the torque converter was replaced per recall. Vehicle will still not engage in forward or reverse. Ford technicians said they are unsure of the problem, that the recalled part should have fixed the issue.

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2013

Multiple times since April 2013 this vehicle has started stalling at stop signs and traffic lights, when shifting gears the vehicle's gas would have to be slightly accelerated first and then it would move in its gear with force. Starting in July all the vehicle's power would cut off at traffic lights and stop signs and would have to be restarted. After receiving notice of the 2013 recall for the torque converter and taking it to a Ford dealership, it was then told by a dealership service rep that the transmission would need to be replaced due to accessive fluids from the torque converter affecting the transmission and damaging it. This has taken place sept. 2013.

23 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2012

The pcm internal computer is crashed and cause the veh to run poorly and not start, drained batter, etc - this is an issue with a lot of 2004 Freestars as I read online and was told to submit the info so that maybe they will do a recall and get this fixed. Thank god it did not happen while driving.

24 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2012

Pcm module got water in it. Had it replaced by dealer, charged 765. 02. Now 14 months later car back in dealer for same issue and their one year service warranty has expired. About ready to spend another 800. 00 to fix. Obviously a design flaw, no question about it.

25 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

Message center dims as to be unreadable during daylight driving, making it impossible to read warnings or mileage remaining or servic needs.

26 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2012

When the vehicle is wet the system seems to short circuit itself. It causes it to shimmy and shake and it wont accelerate. We noticed it several times and took it in where we were told it was the camshaft sensor but after having it replaced twice it is still having the issue. The check engine light is contiguously on and it blinks erratically when ever any water is present. I've been told the sensor can go faulty do to a coil issue allowing water to leak on things it shouldn't.

27 Equipment problem

30 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2006

On April 28th 2006 I was on my way to work, stopped at a red light, proceeded to make a left turn, my van would not move forward of backward. I had to call for a tow to take my van to a dealership. The dealership told me I had to pay $75. 00 in order for them to tell me what was wrong with my van. They diagnosed the problem and told me it was my transmission, that the torque converter had played out. The total charge was $2817. 38 + 75. 00 dollars. I made a call to Ford motor CO. To see if there was a recall on the transmission of the Ford free-star , they told me no.
