Driving down the road at 15 mph, the transmission fails. Cost $3700 to fix. The new transmission stinks. Nothing is right about this car. One piece falls off after another. Nickel and diming me to death!.
This weekend, we were driving the 2004 Ford Freestar (w/ about 75,000 miles), and the transmission completely failed without warning. We were able to coast to the side of the road safely, but this could have been very dangerous if there had been more traffic. The car had its annual safety inspection less than a month earlier, and no problems were found.

Twice driving heavy rain my 2004 free star staled out leaving a stop light. Upon restart would buck and stop running. Would not go into reverse without being put into park. Both times was towed to the dealer, was told the computer was water logged. The first time they took care or it this time they told me it is 825 plus tax and what ever time it took to find water leak. This same van also stop running in heavy rain around 58,000 miles with my wife driving and she almost was rear ended that time is was a transmission failure.
2004 Ford Freestar transmission failure. After talking with Ford service they didn't seem surprised by this. Now I'm stuck with replacing the transmission in my vehicle for something that it appears Ford and many other people are aware of. I would appreciate action be taken against Ford to get me and other consumers money back.
There are 2 incidences of transmission failure with our 2004 Ford Freestar, first time in March,2008, 2nd time in February, 2010.
My wife was driving our 2004 Ford Freestar with only 84,000 when the transmission failed while she was driving. Luckily she was on a quiet road and not the highway and she was able to pull over with no problems. This happened to a friend of ours who also bought a 2004 Ford Freestar and his transmission went out with only 80,000 miles.
I own 2004 Ford Freestar van I have had two incidents that almost was dangerous. The van on the highway was going 70 mph. When the transmission failed to keep the car moving I had a dangerous time trying to pull off the road because of no movement that was 1st time 2nd time I had the children and almost was smashed in the rear-end by a semi-truck he slammed his brakes trying to avoid us it would have been fatal and then Ford would do something about the transmission we were pulling out and the trans. Went no other gear would work.
I have a 2004 Freestar with over 100,000 miles. Last night while driving home in a pretty heavy snow storm my transmission failed (I will know for sure after Ford calls me). The odd thing is it went out completely no gears worked at all. I have had transmissions fail in the past but I always had a gear or two I could use, not this time the car just stopped. I was lucky along with my children that there was no traffic so we did not get hit.
Complete sudden transmission failure without warning - no engine lights on 2004 Ford Freestar.
In early December, I purchased a very well-maintained 2004 Ford Freestar van. This van was owned by close, lifelong friends and I can attest to the fact that the van, with 45,000 miles on its odometer, was in perfectly maintained physical and mechanical condition when purchased. On December 13, 2009, I was driving south on interstate 94 near kenosha, wisconsin when the vehicle's transmission suddenly, and without warning, failed. Traveling in the left-hand lane at freeway speed, I had to maneuver the vehicle without any forward propulsion through three lanes of heavy Sunday traffic. Fortunately, I was able to coast without any forward propulsion onto the right shoulder of the freeway while avoiding a massive pile-up involving the dozens of automobiles and tractor-trailers surrounding me at the time of the transmission failure.
I have a 2004 Ford Freestar which has had regular maintenance with no problems. I currently have 68,000 miles on it and yesterday (Dec. 9, 2009) my transmission failed. The repair shop said it is completely shot with no hopes of repair.
I bought a 2004 Ford Freestar with 16000 miles indicated on the odometer in 2005. The transmission failed at approximately 100,000 miles. I paid to have a used transmission installed at a cost of $2100 in 2009. The used transmission also failed after a period of approximately 4 months and I am left with a useless pile of parts. I have researched this situation through the internet and have found that many other owners of Ford Freestar minivans have experienced the same problems. Is the NHTSA planning any investigation on this issue? thanks for your assistance.
Transmission failed. Had it towed to a garage. Mechanic removed it and found the torque gears stripped and the shaft defective. . Testing indicated the torque gears were not hardened thereby reducing the life of it. He is replacing the parts with better quality parts and saving the damaged ones for review.
My transmission failed on the 2004 Ford Freestar minivan at only 81,000 miles.
Yes purchased a 04 Ford Freestar with 55,000 miles from a used car dealer. Like everyone else had complete transmission failure at 85,000 miles. Threw further research on the vehicle. I discovered this was the second transmission this piece of junk has required. I will never go the domestic route again, when purchasing. No wonder they needed a bail out.
The vehicle (2004 Ford Freestar) in traffic when the transmission suddenly failed, leaving us with no option but to coast off to the side of the road. I had my wife an teenage son in the car with me, and we were very fortunate not to have been injured or killed. If the transmission had failed a few minutes earlier, we could have easily been rear-ended on the interstate. We had to have the transmission replaced at a cost of $3400.
Transmission failure of 2004 Ford Freestar that matches current investigation number pe09-033.
2004 Ford Freestar, 70,983 miles, regularly serviced. I was stopped at a stop sign, went to accelerate and the van went about 30 feet and the transmission failed, then engine revved as if it were in neutral. There was no power or engagement of the transmission in either forward gears or reverse. There was no prior warning/signs of potential issues with the transmission or drive train. Fortunately, I was able to coast to a sidestreet and put my family out of harms way.
Transmission failure. After I had completed a u turn I put the van gear back into drive and the van would not move. I made sure that I had it in the right gear and it was but still no movement.
Transmission failure. Fluid levels were ok but overheated and stopped working properly. Cost $3800 to repair at a dishonest shop in poughkeepsie, new york.
Two transmission failures without warnings in our 2004 Ford Freestar. No accidents just exhaustion and sunburns due to 112*f in the mojave desert for 6 hours of waiting for tow truck to tow 5 family members to closest transmission repair place.
While driving on a main road, my 2004 Ford Freestar transmission failed. As in all the other reports there was no warning whatsoever. Park engages however no other gear does. Vehicle is at transmission shop as I write this. Ford states there is no issue, and because I am out of the extended warranty by 5,000 miles there is nothing they can do for me.
Driveing down road lost complety transmission failure, had vehicle towed to transmission shop convert spline failed ,payed for new transmission ,contacted Ford and was told thats normal wear would not pay a dime.
While accelerating onto the freeway, the transmission failed completely. We were forced to coast off of the freeway into an abandoned weigh-station. The transmission was completely inoperable as no gear would work. Vehicle towed to the dealership where it was purchased, and we are forced to replace the entire transmission unit at a cost of $3500. Vehicle has just over 82,000 miles on the odometer.
Transmission failed. After reading a lot of post this is a issue that Ford knows about and will not do anything about. I took it to the local Ford dealer and was told I needed to flush my fluid. I did and it was still acting up and they said they could find nothing wrong. A couple of moths later the transmission went out. I was able to drive it to the shop and the guy said he was surprised it was even driving the way it was. Fluid was full of metal and had water in it. They question if the Ford dealer even did the flush because it was so bad.
Transmission failure in vehicle with only 52k miles. Vehicle is out of warranty. Had to have the transmission replaced to repair the problem.
Transmission failure.
Transmission failure - 2004 Ford Freestar with 53,000 miles - transmission failed with no prior indication of a problem - the vehicle is in otherwise excellent condition with no excessive road wear (one driver) excellent maintenance schedule. I'm lead t believe that Ford motor company is aware of early transmission failure problems yet seems to be unwilling to make any corrections to said problems or make any concessions to consumers with vehicle transmission repairs. I. E. Extend mileage warranty or monetary compensation for early repairs.
