general problems of the 2005 Ford Freestyle - part 1

Doors will not close in cold weather. This is a safety issue that was not resolved with prior recall.

Driving my 2005 Ford Freestyle today when I suddenly heard a loud explosion or crash sound overhead. At first I thought something had fallen from the sky and crashed into the top of our vehicle. I immediately slowed down and pulled the car off the side of the road. My husband was a passenger in the vehicle. He carefully got out of the vehicle and looked on top of and around the vehicle. That is when we discovered that the glass in the sunroof had literally exploded and blown out of the vehicle. The track was still in place and operating normally. The glass was completely blown out of the vehicle. Because the Ford Freestyle was only in production for 3 years (I believe), there probably are not many still in use. Thus, there are probably not many Ford Freestyle owners having or reporting this problem. Besides being scared, the potential for being hit by the exploding glass and suffering substantial injuries to our heads, eyes, face, shoulders, bodies, could have been tremendous, if not deadly. I reported the incident to Ford motor company. The vehicle has not been inspected yet by manufacturer, police, insurance, or others. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the sunroof glass failure.

Says transmission data error check engine and trac control all display and only allow me to drive 20-35 mph some time I can turn the car off and back on and the codes will shut off but they come back on in the middle of the highway what usually takes me 30 minutes takes me an hour and a half to get to some times 2 hours I can't run my ac cuz that over does my alternator and heats my car I've only had it a year and it's been giving me problems 5 months after getting it I have kids and it gets rough going slow in the heat and hoping if I press to much on the gas please help I am broke and have nothing but this car left and I've spent $2000 for people to tell me nothing is wrong with it.

Stationary and in motion my awd malfunction light will come on, it does this multiple times a day, I just got this Ford the other day, nobody knows what the issue is, but I've seen thousands of other people have this issue. That almost caused me an accident today in the snow. Not very happy about it, and I don't want it to happen again. It's been doing this since I got it. I'm lucky it's not totaled.

This vehicle transmission doesnt work and can not be fix. This problem came with the vehicle. It make noise like a helicopter. I took the car to the dealer and they told me they couldnt do anything and to call Ford motor as there is recall in this model. .

The car stops randomly at times and sometimes will not even startup. Check engine light is on and I recently hit someone in front of me due to jerking or lerching while at a stop light. Very dangerous.

My vehicle stalls every week steering and brakes hard to control, my wife drives the vehicle. Took it to many shops, no codes stored in computer cannot find problem. I had the throttle body cleaned, replaced fuel pump, same fault. The car is unsafe hard to stop sometimes when engine shuts off. Ford dealer cannot find the problem.

My 2005 Ford Freestyle speedometer fluctuates on its on causing the car to jump forward and take off slow with very little power it does it when sitting in park with the car turned on and while driving.

Was stopped in traffic, then when I slowly took my foot off the brake to move, the engine revved up, then surged forward very quickly, I stepped on the brake again, but it wasn't enough to stop the car. I never touched the gas pedal. This resulted in me slamming into the car in front of me.

On several occasions, my 05 Freestyle lunges forward, transmission is engaged in the drive position and when in reverse, it also lunges. Often when stopped at a light the car will not accelerate. It will stumble all over itself and dies. I've almost been hit on a couple occasions because I couldn't get across an intersection or out of the way. On several occasions while driving, it loses power and will not accelerate. Had a a mechanic look at it. He said the throttle body was gummed up and he cleaned it. It ran good for a couple days and it's back to doing the same thing. The car only has 72310 miles on it. This problem has been going on for a couple years and has gotten significantly worse.

2005 Ford Freestyle has a constant scraping sound from the transmission when I am driving it. We paid $ 200. 00 for Ford mechanic to change out the transmission fluid with new fluid kit & he did find metal & brass shavings from tranny in oil pan. Mechanic says the transmission needs to be replaced with new one but I can't afford to pay $4,000. 00 it will take to do it. I found out the cvt transmissions all sooner or later ,but mostly sooner ; fail because they are notorious for it . Bad design for that transmission & they still robbing the owners of these vehicles as I speak ! man up & pay for your mistakes like those in society must when they have robbed others and got caught. I'd like to know why it's let go thus far & who then is accountable ??.

Door latches freezing every winter and doors will not latch and stay shut. Also went to Ford website and realized there was a recall for fsa title: engine idle rpm surge extended warranty field service action number: 12n03. I was unaware of this recall and my car does this quite frequently and I am afraid the tens years is up for this to be taken care of. When pull up to a stop sign or red light, sometimes the engine will rev really high and lurch forward causing me to stomp on brake pedal really hard.

Transmission issues. Started making awful noises and low acceleration. Went to mechanic and told the transmission is shot.

Car is lunging forward and backwards.

If we change gears with the a/c on the car lunges when we're trying to come to a stop. It lunges as we're parking or pulling up to a stop sign or stop light. After stopping it will continue to lunge without warning if it is in drive. . . It will even lunge as we try to shift to park. We are afraid we will hit someone walking in a cross walk or hit the car in front of us while parking. During lunging you can hear the engine rev louder. When driving down a 4 lane high way the car lost gas pedal check transmission light came on. This could have been fatal. With other vehicle speeds up to 65 mph behind my car. . . Have had several garages look at it and still cant figure out the problem. Now a tow bill labor and other compounding exspences.

I bought a 2005 Ford Freestyle last year 2015,for my daughter for her first starter vehicle. Just last night the door latches started freezing up and the door wont close and opens while driving. Apparently there is a recall for this so I called Ford. They told me the recall was taken care of in 2006. The previous owner may have had a garage to keep it protected from cold but I don't have that option. Since the repair was already done they wont take care of it and it is my problem to repair. I would thing this is a dangerous safety issue and they would want to take care of it since the first fix didn't work. My daughter is 17 and now I have to worry about the door opening while she is driving every time its cold and causing an accident or being injured herself.

Door latch is frozen closed and cannot get drivers side door to open. Dismantled entire car to fix issue.

I purchased the 2005 Ford Freestyle used. Issues: (1) shortly after purchasing the transmission light came on, then I took it to a transmission shop, who replaced the fluid, which seemed to fix the problem. (2) random surges of power, which almost resulted in a few accidents and was severely frightening (corrected before a recall) (3) this past winter problems with shutting the front doors, then with out warning ( with two children in the back sets ) the back passenger door few open when I turned the corner. The children screamed, I was thankful that a child was not severally injured and then, I had call someone to pick us up. I called Ford and was told I was the only complaint! later at a children's recreation, I parked next to a woman with children driving the same model. I asked her if she experienced door issues, she stated both doors flew open with the children in the back seats, and stated her husband lubed the doors down. (4) now the transmission will randomly decide not to move, but if I turn the free style on and off it might go into gear. No transmission light on indicated an issue. My opinion is the 2005 Ford Freestyle was created to market toward families, the design and marketing worked, but as a result several families are now in danger.

I have 2 issues: #1. Back seat passenger door child safety locks are always on. Every time I have a passenger in the back seats they are trapped, and cannot get out unless someone opens the doors from the outside or they pull up on the lock from he inside. Ive had this problem since I purchased the car, but never thought I could file a complaint until I by coincidence came across your website today. #2. The e-brake does has not worked properly either for a long period of time, over a year, which I believe is a defect. Because, every time I would engage it or disengage it, there was no tension, it felt "blank" for lack of better description, and just recently, I message on the dashboard has come up, and a bell keeps tinging, telling me the emergency brake is engaged while driving (when it is not!) and it does not matter what I try to do, I cannot make the sound or the message go away, nor does the e-brake work,! it does not engage or disengage. This dangerous for me, and my vehicle.

I am very frustrated that I have the same make/model that was included in the 11/8/2006 recall but Ford and NHTSA limited the vehicles to only certain states. During cold weather water is allowed to enter the car door and freeze the latches. The car door latch then freezes making it unsafe and undriveable as the door will not latch. This recall was done on 10/5/2006 under campaign number pe11018 but because my VIN was not included Ford will not fix the safety issue.

Drivers side door latch will freeze up when outside temperature drops below freezing. Door will not close properly, or if it sounds like it has closed properly can pop open when driving. Talked to Ford and the recall work was done once, therefore they will not cover the cost to fix again.

Awd malfunction light started coming on occasionally last fall. It is now on all the time. Talked to a mechanic and was told it was either a sensor or a wheel bearing. In the process of replacing the wheel bearing right now.

Car was financed and purchased used from authorized Ford dealer in 2007 @ approx. 64k miles. Previous owner was registered as Ford motor CO. , indiana. On 12 Jun 2014, without warning, the continuously-variable transmission (cvt) first showed signs of a problem: failing to shift out of lower speed gear from a stop to higher gears during travel. Problem was remedied temporarily by shifting from d to r and back to d while stopped. The problem recurred sporadically, but within last week frequency of problem has increased while awaiting service appointment. This morning, 13-Aug-2014, transmission slipped and failed to engage in any forward gear while stopped at intersection, resulting in a complete loss of forward propulsion. Problem remedied by shifting from d to r and back to d, with significant difficultly. Service technician states that cvt failures in this make and model are common and recommends replacement of transmission with rebuilt (as transmission is no longer manufactured by Ford). Moreover, only Ford can perform the repair/replacement. No warning lights were activated during any of these events. Cost of repair will exceed value of car. $5800 or more versus $3600 trade-in or instant-cash offer price $1500. Ac compressor failure and rebuild (including rear ac) in 2012 cost $875.

My Ford Freestyle has began to experience acceleration problems when parking or reversing at low speeds only while the a/c is running on any fan level. Have come close to hitting a pedestrian while parking, but no serious injuries to report.

On multiple occasions, this vehicle is lunging. Unexpected moving when foot not on accelerator. This happens at low speed. I have two kids under the age of 2 and I would like for you to recall this vehicle and repair it immediately. I don't deem it safe to drive. I see where this has been investigated since 2011 and you should recall the vehicles before someone get seriously injured. Please respond as to what you are waiting on.

* acceleration problems when parking or reversing at low speeds when the a/c is running on any fan level. - during high exterior temperatures when vehicle ac is on, vehicle drastically lunges forward if in drive - or backwards if in reverse. Research online states that this is a common problem among Ford vehicles, therefore if Ford does not act swiftly to correct this obvious safety defect in their manufacturing, I will contact my congressional/senate representatives. These vehicles transport children, and Ford should do the right thing and not ignore these problems like Chevrolet and Toyota did. "man-up" Ford!.

On 04/10/2014 at 10:50am. I was driving on route 22 west bound. I was going 65 mph when the traction light came on as well the wrench light that is transmission light came flashing across dashboard "check transmission". The car went from 65mph to 25mph and I almost got killed by a tractor trailer that was behind me, because of sudden loss of power . The vehicle lost power and I could not travel more than 25 mph and the car was stuck in low gear and would not go above 3 rpm's. I took it to dealership they ran it through diagnostic, the code that came up was p0715, which is possible mesontranich unit ,tss input was erratic, the code was consider inconclusive and dealership and the warranty company refused to fix and they said there was nothing wrong with the car. On 04/22/2014 I was driving pennsylvania turnpike going north bound on route 476. When the same incident happened with a speed of 50mph and was stuck in gear. I had to pull over with 2 young kids in the vehicle. I shut the car off and turned it back on. Besides traction light that came on and wrench light came on saying check transmission, the check engine light came on as well. I was able to video record the whole incident to show how unsafe the vehicle I was in. I was able to get the vehicle to a Ford dealership. They ran diagnostics the codes that came up were p0715, p0701,p2765, the vehicle motormounts were broken, whoever fixed did and illegal fix, the motor mounts should of been completely replaced and the motor mounts was super glued by rtv super glue,which is illegal. This vehicle was inspected by the dealership where purchased and the sold me a vehicle with an improper and illegal inspection. The car should of been fixed by dealership and was not and put me and my family safety at risk.

Well it idles loud. And is slow to go when their is nothing wrong with transmission. Their is a lot of complaints from people on this car and everyone is trying to get a govt recall on this make and model. Also the car fix shop says it could be the throttle body or transmission filter. Researching everyone else is having this same problem and when you get this fixed which altogether is 1700 dollars. It just goes right back out. Someone said that a lawsuit was being formed on Ford because they won't fix the problem. And you are stuck with this car. Even the ones who hasn't drove very much and is brand new is having the same problems also. From 2001 to 2006 yr models. Please help us get Ford to do a recall on this make and model of these cars please.

Car lunges when sitting still with engine running both forward and reverse and is worse when air cond is on. Loud noise I believe is coming from transmission while parked and running and sitting still. System was overcharging and caused my battery to explode. Check light comes on intermittently.

Purchased used-when the weather is cold the doors will not shut-appears to be some type of electronic problem-even when car is warmed up the doors will not latch shut.

I purchased a Ford Freestyle sel 2005, on November 2005, from the Ford dealer, brand new car. I am the only driver. My transmission started to make a noise on last week. I took the car to 2 different mechanics and both told me that it needs a new transmission!!! it is a cvt transmission, very expensive and only has 130,000 miles. This is a common issue apparently, but there is not a recall or nothing!!!!.

Happens both when taking off and going over 40mph veh makes thumping sound from rear end and hesitates until thumping goes away then able to accelerate without problem.

I was backing up out of parking spot, the car lunged backwards. Put the car in drive it lunged forward, idled and the engine fail safe light came on, showing wrench as well. The car stalled out. Luckily I was able to coast into parking lot. I had to let the car sit before being able to start it up again. The car has lunged forward on multiple occasions when at a slow mph or pulling into parking spaces. I'm afraid to drive the car in case this happens again with my daughter in the car. I continue to read the same complaints on this vehicle so hard to believe Ford hasn't done more for the safety of their customers.

It is about NHTSA campaign id number: pe11018. I started experiencing the exact same condition described in this investigation summary. Then I researched on web, and found about this investigation. I was shocked by that the investigation was closed 2 years ago, and they concluded "no recall" , "no safety issue". . . It is safety issue!! I have been having the bad dreams these days because of this problem. . . In my dream, I totally lost control of the car, and the car kept going & going. . . . . Please have Ford fix this problem. Please!.
