3 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2016

Long story short. . . . My vehicle will increase throttle on it's own when sitting at a light in traffic or without traffic. Sometimes when I release the brake to take off it will throttle up just before and then stall out. I am only able to restart the car if I turn of the air conditioning. Today as with many other days, the throttle increased while attempting to slowly back out of a parking space. I slammed on the brakes to get the car to stop as the throttle contiued to increase and then stall out. I have noticed severely increasing incidents of this happening and am scared to drive my car. I have no other options. Please help me with this issue. I don't want to die or kill someone else because the car seems to have a mind of its own and my efforts to control the car are futile at times.

4 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. While driving at low speeds in traffic, the vehicle began to independently surge forward without warning. The contact had to turn the steering wheel towards the median to avoid crashing into another vehicle. The vehicle stalled, but was able to be restarted. The failure recurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.

5 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2012

Backing from driveway into the street, car surged but was able to stop it when brake applied. At that point the vehicle stalled. Able to restart and continue without incident but warning "wrench" light was on indicating throttle / transmission fault was detected and service required. After restarting later that day no problems noticed and no warning light. This was the most severe case so far but had noticed some small surging in prior weeks both in reverse and drive when starting out both from cold start and from restart conditions. Further research suggests this is a well know throttle body problem for Ford Freestyle / 500 / montego models from 2005 / 2006 timeframe. Safety risk is significant, cannot let other family members or any less experienced operators drive this vehicle until the problem is addressed. Replacement or at least maintenance for this known faulty system should be provided at no charge by the manufacturer.

6 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2012

We were in a parking lot. I had just shifted in to reverse and lighted up on the brake, and the car throttled backwards. I quickly pressed the brake and the car stalled or quit. I started the car again and the car throttled backwards again. I pressed the brake, but it didn't stall this time. I slowly released the brake and was able to back out of my spot. A little while later, having arrived at another destination, about 10 miles away, I was pulling into a parking spot, in drive, and after releasing the throttle, to apply the break as I was coasting in, the car 'throttled' again. Fortunately, there was not another vehicle in the space in front of me or I would have probably had a fender bender.

7 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that while reversing, the vehicle lunged forward abnormally and stalled. The contact stated that the lunging occurred while the air conditioner was activated. The contact did not take the vehicle to a local dealer for a diagnostic test. The failure mileage was 55,000.

8 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

With the vehicle in gear, either forward or reverse, and with a foot on the break at idle rpm the engine surges causing the vehicle to lurch. Consequently, the vehicle will either stall or the "wrench" light will illuminate and the vehicle will not accelerate to over 30mph while driving the rpm's up well past normal for that rate of speed. This is also the case while at idle speed (no foot on break. . . Just engine in gear and at idle. . . As if pulling into or out of a parking space). This has been ongoing, yet intermittent, for a little over a year though now it's a multiple-daily occurence.

9 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2011

My Ford Freestyle has had engine surging issues for approximately a year know. Today 6/21/2012 my car started surging at every stop light so severely if we weren't holding down the brake we would of hit the car in front of us. The problem became so severe we had to put the car in neutral at every intersection to keep car from trying to jump into the intersection and stall. Today's temp was in the high nineties and we were using the air conditioning. Today's incident was the worst its been. Went on line and search the symptoms and found that a lot of Freestyle owners are having the same issue. With the safety of the car owner and pedestrians that could be near the car in jeopardy. Ford should be recalling these cars and trying to find a permanent solution to fix this rather then charging the owners high dollars to replace a defective designed part with the same defective part.

10 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2011

In the summer of 2011 our Freestyle began to surge as far as two feet while driven at low speeds and also while at a complete stop, surging forward or backward when in reverse, revving loudly and subsequently stalling. Concerned, we took the vehicle to our Ford service department. The Ford service department told us that the problem was uncommon (not true) and did not mention any service bulletins before reprogramming our Freestyles pcm and replacing the throttle body.

11 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2011

I was waiting in line to pick my daughter up from school today. When she got in the car I took my foot off of the brake and my car lunged forward and almost hit the car in front of me. I had to push down on the brake to stop my car from crashing into the car in front of me. When I attempted to take my foot off of the brake for a second time and to drive around the other car, my car lunged again and almost stalled.

12 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

Vehicle has been lunging when put into drive from park, and when put into reverse from park. Kinda scary actually! this summer, it got severe during the heat wave while using the a/c; vehicle would lunge then stall out. Called the local dealership to complain, and was told the car has too many miles on it. Called the Ford national complant line to report same; was told "it has not been a reported problem". When I searched the problem on line, I found that to be a false statement.

13 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2011

I was sitting in the car with the air conditioner on for about 10 minutes with my children while my wife went to pick up a few groceries. When we left I put the car reverse and slowly took my foot of the break. The car then jerked backwards as my foot was softly on the break and then again when it was off the break. The car then stalled and the wrench light appeared. This has happened several more times since, mostly when the car is in "drive" with the air conditioner working hard and my foot either softly on the break or just off the break. The car will jerk forward. I'm not sure the component that is malfunctioning, but bellow is an educated guess.

14 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2010

I have always owned Fords however this is by far the scariest Ford car ever and to me the unsafest!! I purchased my Ford Freestyle back in October 2010. Ever since then my car seems to have a mind of its own. When I am completely stopped my car will automatically lunge forward and even stall when I am turning my wheel. I have a 5 year old child who I drive everyday to school in this death trap and it scares me to death. I have tried talking to my Ford dealership about this since the car was like this when I bought it but of course they want me to spend all this money I do not have on repairs. . . After internet research it appears there are hundreds of people that have the same problem with this vehicle. Why isn't anyone doing something about this to protect the consumer? it is very scary and I do not understand why the car is lunging forward and backwards if backing up when my foot is clearly on the brake as well as stalling . I hope someone will do something about it before someone ends up in an accident or even dead because of this!! that would be a serious lawsuit I am sure. This is a serious issue please please do a recall on it now if not for me for the sake of someone's life who is driving one of these unsafe vehicles.

15 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

My 2006 Ford Freestyle has had an increasing number of incidences where the car has just come out of park and into forward or reverse, where all of a sudden the throttle will surge even when applying the brake. When it is hot out, it is now occurring several times a week. Yesterday it did the same thing and then stalled completely. When I turned the car back on, the 'wrench' light was on and the car lost all its power. Then I disconnected the battery and everything was back to normal. I checked the problem online and it seems to be a very prevalent and extremely dangerous situation for this car. The dealers are unable to repair it at this time because the problems are happening so often that the needed parts are on back-order. I am forced to drive the car until the parts become available, constantly fearing that it will cause an accident.

16 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2010

The throttle body in my 2006 Ford Freestyle was causing my car to either stall or lunge out of control. Trying to pull into traffic, the car stalled in front of oncoming traffic. Then began working as normal. A few days later the car began to lunge forward or backward when the transmission was shifted. Would lunge when in drive and stopped. Took to dealer, and they replaced with a new throttle body. I do not have the old one. Ford knows there is a problem. They have been backordered for most of 2009 and into 2010 on this part. They have changed the replacement part to a new one, with different part number. Thousands of cars have had this issue. Cars can stall at highway speeds, in traffic. Or can suddenly lunge forward even when the brake is depressed.

17 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2010

Our 2006 Ford Freestyle has been giving us problems for the last two summers. It seems that when we run the a/c the car will sometimes surge forward when pulling into a parking space or coming to rest at a stoplight/drive-thru. There have been a couple close calls with hitting other vehicles in front of us. It has also stalled and the transmission light has come on numerous times. It seems that we must turn the car off to rest and then start it back up for the issue to be fixed. We are now very careful when we run the a/c because this seems to affect it somewhat. We recently took our car to the dealership and they told us we needed to replace the throttle body which would be $500 for the part without labor. We simply cannot afford to fix the problem now and are praying for safety. We will no longer buy a Ford and when contacting Ford we were told there was nothing they could do about the problem.

18 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2010

2006 Ford Freestyle car surges/accelerates forward on its own then will stall. Told the problem is a faulty throttle body assembly.

19 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

My 2006 Ford Freestyle surges forward (or back) when taken out of park. Occurs more frequently when placed into reverse. Occasionally, the car will also stall after surging when the brakes are slammed to stop the car and a yellow wrench light will appear on dash. Brought to dealership and they can not replicate. No codes. Has happend about 20 times in the past year.

20 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

I purchased my 2006 Ford Freestyle in December 2009. As soon as the weather got warmer I noticed that when parking, backing up, or trying to stop, the vehicle would surge as if I still had my foot on the accelerator. Soon it also started surging/sputtering when I first started out and would occasionally stall, twice in heavy traffic. I took the vehicle to the Ford dealership to discover that the throttle body position sensor doesn't work properly & that all Freestyles were having the same problem. I was shocked to find that a new unit could be put in but was not covered as a recall and was going to cost $1000. As a single mom, that was just impossible. Luckily my disabled father was previously a mechanic and was able to use carb cleaner to clean the sensor and temporarily stop the problem. Since then, every spring the problem comes back and I have to have the throttle body unit cleaned several times before winter. Another problem I have with this vehicle is that the brakes wear out unusually quickly. I don't know if it's because of having to fight the throttle position sensor to stop the car, or if it's a flaw in the design of the brake system. I do know that when it starts to feel like they are wearing out I have to replace them ASAP because the more they get worn the faster they wear out, if that makes sense. Something I've just recently noticed is that the lights (interior, exterior, display, all of them) have been almost blinking. . . Getting brighter/dimmer and at the same time my a/c blows harder/softer, like they are surging as well. Upon further examination I found that the top and bottom driver's side motor mounts have cracked/rotted bushings. Ford should absolutely replace these throttle bodies without question; my children ride in my Freestyle every day and one close call is one too many. I want this fixed once and for all.

21 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. When the vehicle stopped the rpm's began to increase and decrease excessively. She also stated the vehicle would intermittently stall while driving forward or in reverse. When the vehicle stalled and was restarted, it would function normally. The failure was not diagnosed and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 75,000. The current mileage was 83,000. The VIN was unavailable.

22 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle suddenly began to lose power and decrease in speed. The vehicle would not gain speed when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The throttle control transmission light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and the mechanic stated that this was a common failure. A diagnostic test was performed and the failure ceased when the vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was not repaired and the contact drove to her residence. The dealer stated that a diagnostic could not be performed unless the failure was present. They assumed that the failure was due to the throttle body of the engine. The failure recurred a month later while the vehicle was idling. The contact placed the vehicle into reverse and then back into drive. The vehicle accelerated and quickly stalled. The emission system light illuminated and the failure occurred three times in one day. The following day, the light remained illuminated, but there was no failure. They took the vehicle to the Ford dealer for diagnostic testing, which confirmed the throttle body failure. Through research, the contact verified that this was a common failure with her make and model vehicle. The manufacturer stated that they would not be responsible for the repairs. The vehicle is currently at the contact's residence waiting to be repaired. The failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 71,000. Updated 09/14/09. Updated 09/14/09 updated 09/16/09.

23 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2008

We bought a used Ford Freestyle in 2008. Since that time, we have had recurring problems stemming from a defective throttle body. It has been in-and-out of the shop, while various mechanics tried to figure out the problem. Finally, approximately two years ago, I did my own research (discovered the countless reports of problems with the Freestyle) and specifically requested that the mechanic replace the throttle body. This was after having surges in rpms and lurching of the car (while sitting in traffic with no foot on the accelerator), and also dead stalls in the middle of intersections and oncoming traffic when attempting to accelerate. This fixed the problem until several months later. Next, we replaced the entire transmission last spring (the vehicle would shift down to first gear at cruising speed, e. G. , on the interstate, then go into "limp" mode). In addition, apparently there is also a systemic issue with the design of the Ford's scroll compressor, which began showing symptoms this past spring. Thankfully my (new) mechanic replaced a $40 valve in the compressor, instead of the entire $1000 compressor (which the Ford folks recommended). Approximately two years later, we are replacing the throttle body for a second time today (it is currently in the shop) because of issues with surges in acceleration and stalling in traffic and loss of power. The mechanic just told me, "as a friend, I'm telling you: as soon as this car is fixed, you need to sell it. You will continue to have recurring problems with it. " we bought this vehicle for around $10,000, and I'd estimate we have spent nearly that much in repairs over the past four years. I'm just thankful that my wife and children were not seriously injured in the meantime. How can Ford sell such an unsafe vehicle with no recourse? as soon as I can afford another vehicle, I'm selling this Freestyle.
